Reporter Eugene Kane of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel describes the presence of black men in the Wisconsin Prison system.  Surprisingly, the rate of incarceration for black men in Wisconsin is 10 times greater than that for white men.  This makes YourBlackWorld agree when a national online publication dubbed Wisconsin as one fo the “Ten Worst Places to be Black”.

The journalist talks about some of the inmates who consider it a “badge of honor” to be incarcerated.  Indeed, there are young black males who consider going to prison to be a rite of passage, which is problematic in America.

The Governor of Wisconsin is putting together a task force to find out why so many black men are in prison.  According to Kane, black people are only 6% of the Wisconsin population, but make up 45% of the prison population. 

Among the factors believed to lead to increased prison populations for black men are income levels (affecting the ability to pay for effective counsel), poor educational systems in inner city communities and a declining economy in Milwaukee, a city that contains the greatest number of African-Americans in Wisconsin.
