Dr. Boyce discussing Don Imus and Rev. Al Sharpton

Dr. Boyce Watkins Expresses Support for Michael Vick to Black America Web, Associated Press

Dr. Boyce Watkins of Syracuse University discussed black athletes and Michael Vick's situation with Black America Web, CNN, and the Associated Press recently.  During the interviews, the professor expressed remorse for Vick's situation, but also hope.  "People have to remember that being thrown out by white America doesn't mean it's the end of the world," says Watkins. "Vick's greatest  concern is getting on the field, winning games and getting his life together. Who cares if he never does another endorsement for Disney?"

Watkins gave personal advice to Vick, which he has also done in various columns and on national television.  "Don't let whatever influences you are dealing with cause you to lose all that you've worked for," says Watkins, who analyzed Barry Bonds on the Tom Joyner Morning Show recently.  "You can make your mother cry at the end of the day if you keep all this craziness around you."

Dr. Watkins argues that while we have learned that dog fighting is serious, not everyone is going to hate Vick as much as PETA. "In sports, there is one fundamental truth, 'If you win, they forgive all sin', so if Vick can win a Super Bowl somehow, he's going to be just fine.  The question is whether he can be focused enough to overcome this situation."

Dr. Watkins is not apologetic for Vick, whom he claims must take control of his life.  However, Watkins feels that America can be harsh with black athletes. "Is it a coincidence that the most hated athlete in America is almost always a black man?" asks Watkins.  "When I analyze Vick, I see a young man who made a terrible mistake, who still has hope for the future.  When America studies Vick, they see a monster."

Dr. Boyce Watkins is a Finance Professor at Syracuse University and author of "What if George Bush were a Black Man?" He has written research discussing the economic wealth extraction being taken from the black community via uncompensated collegiate athletics.  To see Dr. Watkins' commentary on Vick and others, please visit Click Here.  For more information on Dr. Watkins, you can visit www.BoyceWatkins.com.
