Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News argues that the team is solid, but needs a true marksman to get the job done.  Thus, it is argued that one of the essential players who cannot be removed from the roster is Mike Miller.

 He argues that Michael Redd, typically a long-range shooter, was “abysmal” in the scrimmage, and that Miller can provide greater consistency.  Given the prevalence of zone defenses being used in international play, he could be right.

 The team is preparing for the FIBA Americas Championship, a precursor to the 2008 Olympic Games.  The team must be reduced to a 12-man roster, a difficult task in light of recent embarrassments of the US National Team.  Once considered to be a source of complete dominance, the US Team is no longer feared by the rest of the world and has appeared quite vulnerable, sinking as low as 5^th place in the World Championships.
