Congress is launching an investigation into the finances of
“mega-pastors”, in a critical analysis of the finances of well-known
televangelists. Sen. Charles
Grassley, the highest ranking Republican on the Senate Finance
Committee, is questioning the non-profit status of these organizations. Creflo Dollar, Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn and Joyce Meyer are also under scrutiny. "We don't have any problems complying to a valid request," Dollar told CBS News' The Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen. Dollar was asked on the CBS Early Show about the allegations that two Rolls Royces were purchased for he and his wife. Dollar denied that the allegations have merit. "That's not true. First of all, we don't have two
Rolls-Royces," he said. "And secondly, the one Rolls-Royce that was
purchased was purchased by the donors, or the members of the church, and
it was a surprise to me. I had no idea they were doing it." Grassley sent out letters this week to 6 ministers, asking for details
about their expenses, compensation packages and perks, which include
expensive cars and private jets. The
Senator said that he was acting on behalf of those in the public and
news media, who have expressed concern. "I don't want to conclude that there's a problem,
but I have an obligation to donors and the taxpayers to find out more.
People who donated should have their money spent as intended and in
adherence with the tax code."
