Females And Black Patients Overlooked for ICDs

By: Chante' Wallace

Two recent studies show that there is an overwhelming percentage of eligible female and black patients with heart failure are not receiving implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

One of the studies, published in the October 3 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that fewer than 40 percent of potentially eligible patients hospitalized for heart failure received ICDs.  Women and black patients are significantly less likely to receive and ICD than white men.

The study focused primarily on the overall use of ICD therapy in heart-failure patients at risk for sudden cardiac death.  The analysis consisted of patients admitted with heart failure and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 30 percent –a measure how well the left ventricle of the heart pumps.  The patients received treatment between January 2005 and June 2007.

Among the patients that were eligible for ICD therapy, 35.4 percent had ICD therapy at discharge.  The use of ICDs were used in 28.2 percent of eligible black women, 29.8 percent of white women, 33.4 percent of black men, and 43.6 percent of white men.
