VH1 HIP HOP HONORS

By: Tiffani Chase

All I have to say is, “A Tribe Called Quest, Pharell, and Busta Rhymes”.  Does it get any crazier than that?  Village Voice staff writer Chloé A. Hilliard was feeling their vibe and I must agree. Another wonderful year to celebrate and honor the sound of hip-hop culture the music; with honorees such as Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg, Whoodini, and A Tribe Called Quest.  Blessed to be here for the 4th consecutive year this years, awards show was hosted by the comical and charming, Tracy Morgan.

Many enjoy this night because they feel it honors the artist that goes overlooked and under appreciated.  But I love this night so much because it celebrates the sound of a universal culture. It honors true artist.  It publicly says to this artist- we appreciate the love you put into this culture. It’s not about ‘getting money’ (didn’t see 50 onstage, just thought I’d mention that).  It’s about the culture.  Music is a part it, but hip-hop is also the way we eat, talk, dance, dress, it’s the way we live. So to take that entire energy bottle it up on a stage and let it explode through the many variations of musical interpretation is beautiful.

So instead of just seeing video honey’s for the night, we get the chance to honor a female emcee, holding it down, as an artist, writer, and producer Miss Missy Elliot.  The ladies held it down with performances from Eve, Tweet, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Nelly Furtardo, and off course Missy is also honored by her longtime collaborator himself “me with no Timberland is like puff with no Mase”, Timberland.

It was an incredible night; The VH1 Hip Hop Honors aired Monday, October 8th at 10pm.  Other appearances: Ne-Yo, Jermaine Dupri, Kool Moe Dee, Teddy Riley & New Jack Swing, Doug E. Fresh, T-pain, and more.
