Black Women Have Higher Risk of Vitamin D Deficiency during Pregnancy

A recent study published by the Journal of Nutrition found that vitamin D deficiency is common for many pregnant women, and black women have a higher risk when compared to white women. This deficiency even occurs in women who are taking vitamin supplements throughout their pregnancy.

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh reviewed blood test from 200 black women and 200 white women from 1997 to 2001. The researchers also looked at samples of blood from the infants of these women. The results showed that over 80 percent of black women and almost 50 percent of white women reviewed in the program were found to be vitamin D deficient during pregnancy. Of the infants tested at birth, higher levels of vitamin D deficiency were found in 92.4 percent of black infants and 66.1 percent of white infants.
