The USA men’s basketball team closed out an undefeated FIBA America’s tournament with a 118-81 victory over the Argentina national team in the tourney’s championship.

USA looked to stay undefeated in the last and deciding game of the tournament. Led by the heroics and record-tying performance of Lebron James, the USA captured the goal. James scored an Olympic-qualifying record of 31 points. James also set the record for 3pt field goals made and attempte 

James looked to score early in the match as he connected on three out of four 3pt field goals in the first quarter. He finished the game 11-15 from the field and 8-11 from the 3pt arc.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski was very impressed at the level of play by Lebron. 

“Even though I do not like to single guys out, LeBron’s performance today was probably one of the best ones in an international game that an American player has had. He had a big time performance today.” says Krzyzewski.

The USA’s play throughout the tournament has been nothing less than stellar as today performance proved. A finish by Kobe Bryant with 5 minutes to go in the first quarter gave the USA enough momentum to end the quarter with 35-14 lead.

Carmelo Anthony, who was the only player to make the tournaments first team, really felt good about closing the tournament out on a big win.

“We didn’t want to qualify yesterday and then come out and here and lose. Tonight, we had our focus; our focus that we should have. We came in and took care of things like we wanted.” says Anthony. 

The USA was led by the stellar play of James but teammates Dwight Howard contributed 20 points, Carmelo Anthony scored 16 and Tayshaun Prince scored 13 points in the contest. The USA also did a great job of distributing the ball, as Bryant had 8 assists and Deron Williams added five of his own.

Coach Krzyzewski was very delighted at the level of play by his team and opponent.

“We are proud of the effort our guys gave,” says Coach Krzyzewski. He adds, “I thought the two best teams in the tournament played today against one another. It is always an honor for us to play against Argentina. They play well as a team against anyone in the world. Our guys also played well as a team today.”

USA looks to continue their success in the 2008 Beijing Olympics where 12 teams will compete for the prized gold medal.
