Detroit, Michigan’s “hip hop mayor” Kwame Kilpatrick’s tenure has been marked by success such as a balanced city budget, downtown renovation and a new tax plan intended to lessen the financial burden on home owners. However, his career as mayor of the city has also been marred by controversy, including the misuse of civic funds, and most recently being brought to trail for violation of the Whistleblower law.

   Former members of Detroit’s police force Officer Harold Nelthrope, ex-bodyguard Walt Harris and Deputy Chief Gary Brown have brought up the charges against him for firing them as a consequence for investigating infidelities, personal deviances, and general misconduct by the mayor’s bodyguard staff. All three of the terminated staff are seeking monetary damages from the mayor for what they see as the unfair termination of their careers.

   According to the Detroit Free Press, allegations of adultery and misconduct by the Kilpatrick security team are the major aspects of the civil suit.  After managing to repair to a large degree his tarnished image, it remains to be seen whether this latest episode in the Kilpatrick saga will taint his administration or if he will be able to beat the charges and win back the approval of the people of Detroit.
