"Say What?" Quote of the Week:

'White America needs to understand that it is poisoned to its soul by racism', and that 'all too many White Americans are horrified not with the conditions of (Black) life but with the product of these conditions-the (Black person) himself'. In a word, they are not horrified by injustice done to us in New York or New Orleans, in the schools, courts, streets, slums or prisons, but are horrified at the righteous anger we express, and the audacity not just to hope but also to resist injustice and oppression in its various forms." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Your Black Hip Hop: New Clues Emerge in the 1994 Shooting of Tupac Shakur: In case you didn't know, Tupac Shakur was shot more than once. Before his fatal shooting in 1996, he was also shot in 1994 during an ambush that took place at a rap studio.  Like many murders in urban areas, the no-snitching rule prevailed and police were left without witnesses. However, an LA Times writer, Chuck Phillips, has spent the last 14 years obsessing over Tupac's shootings, and the hunt is finally paying off. Click to Read.

The State of the Black Union: When Money and Activism Don't Quite Mix - When reading Tavis Smiley-related blogger comments on YourBlackWorld, I actually started to feel sorry for Tavis. Not since Milly Vanilly have I seen a brother lose so many fans so fast. His attacks on Barack Obama were about as popular as Cheeseburger flavored Ice Cream, and the brother was going down hard. It’s one thing when your enemies hate your guts (i.e. the racist viewers on Fox News), but it’s another thing when your old friends are feeding your kidneys to the family dog.  Click to Read.

Dr. Boyce Watkins: Will Obama's Success Unite Us or Divide Us? - Barack Obama’s emergence as a powerful Presidential candidate is truly worth celebrating. Beginning as a modest participant in the election, his creative political genius gave African-Americans the courage to support a black man. Hillary Clinton’s role as the “political sugar substitute” came to an abrupt end once Obama came with the real cane. Obama created his base of believers by going to the whitest parts of white America and showing that he could build a bridge long enough to gain universal trust and support.  Click to Read.

Kevin D. Johnson, Your Black College - The Similarities Between Martin Luther King and Einstein: As I learn more about the great minds of the 20th century by reading in-depth biographies, I realize that popular culture often has the unfortunate effect of shaping the ideas and thoughts that we have about our country’s most important heroes. From a financial company that carelessly uses the image of penny-pinching Ben Franklin, to a brewery that peddles images of American patriot Samuel Adams to gain more loyal customers, it seems as if such desecration is becoming more common. As a result, we begin to recognize American icons in the most simplistic and incomplete ways. Such is the case with Martin Luther King, Jr., the charismatic leader of oppressed black people, and Albert Einstein, the spike-haired scientist responsible for the most famous equation in modern science: E = mc2.   Click to Read.

Asha Castleberry, Your Black Global (and NYU): As time progresses, The Darfur crisis remains to be one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisises. Hundreds of thousands have died or suffered from war crimes, starvation, and disease. Sudan’s government bears the bulk of the responsibility for these ongoing crimes by denying UN intervention. Today, more people are reaching out to China for diplomatic assistance. Your Black News: Stanford Researcher Says that Whites Subconsciously Associate Blacks with Apes - Crude historical depictions of African Americans as ape-like may have disappeared from mainstream U.S. culture, but research presented in a new paper by psychologists at Stanford, Pennsylvania State University and the University of California-Berkeley reveals that many Americans subconsciously associate blacks with apes. In addition, the findings show that society is more likely to condone violence against black criminal suspects as a result of its broader inability to accept African Americans as fully human, according to the researchers. Kristen Lawrence, Your Black Life: Taking it Black - Black Author Works to Help African-Americans Regain Control of the Haircare Industry - Devin Robinson is "Taking it back Black", with a cooperative economics movement in the hair care industry. Spearheading the "100 stores in 100 days" movement under the Black Beauty Supply Association, he illustrates the very nature of Dubois' plea for black wealth sustained and cultivated not on the backs of blacks but to the benefit them. To create the fight for this however Robinson had to run into a rather unsettling experience.  Click to Read.

Dr. Boyce Watkins: Why Obama Really Didn't Reject Farrakhan and Why Farrakhan Doesn't Mind Anyway - During the recent Democratic debate, I saw Barack Obama getting pushed into the "black corner". This is the same corner that Hillary and Bill Clinton pushed him into during the campaign in South Carolina. The same corner that caused some Americans to (temporarily) limit him to being "just another black candidate", instead of a potential visionary who can guide our country out of one of it's darkest periods.
