Pastor Kelly Oglesby: Senator Obama and Pastor Wright - As a pastor of the Christian gospel and a black woman, I feel uniquely qualified to offer a perspective on the current conversation. Particularly, since I have purchased and listened to tapes of Pastor Wright at length and repeatedly as well as read some of the church publications. Indeed at one point in time my husband, who is also an ordained minister and pastor considered joining the denomination. Click to Read.

Michelle Yeager, Your Black Life: In Her Shoes - My mother passed away from Ovarian Cancer on May 23, 2006.  It was exactly five years to the date that she was diagnosed at Stage Four.  She was very involved with the community and was one of those women that left a lasting impact on your life if you all came in contact.  Click to Read.

Dr. Cyrus Ellis, Your Black Brothers:  Reflections on Education and Blackness - I teach a graduate level course in Social and Cultural foundations, or what some call "the multicultural course". While I try very hard to try and provide insight to my students on a variety of cultural matters, I tend to always get stuck on the point about education and being African American. I am not stuck concerning the misrepresentation of African Americans and our educational ability in our media, I am stuck on the power of one written exchange between Benjamin Banneker and Thomas Jefferson that does not always see the light of day.  Click to Read.

Pastor Kelly Oglesby, Your Black Gospel:  We Need One Another - We need one another to make it through the day and to make it from here to eternity. Eric L. Wattree, Your Black Scholar:  Hillary Clinton Doesn't Deserve the Democratic Nomination - Hillary Clinton doesn't deserve the Democratic Nomination for president--in fact, based on what these primaries have revealed of her character, she doesn't even deserve her seat in the senate. While Hillary has long since switched to the Democrat Party, recent weeks have clearly demonstrated that her Republican inclination towards cutthroat politics, shallow character and deceit remains firmly in tact.  Click to Read.

Nathaniel Gadsden, Your Black Writers: Step Up/Speak Out: Recently, the cities of Harrisburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have been rocked with a string of senseless shooting deaths. Almost all of the victims were young African Americans, and the killers were also young African Americans. Unfortunately, this is not shocking news to most people living in Harrisburg, the United States, or the planet earth. The sad reality is, African Americans are killing one another, in what I call, a Self-imposed Holocaust and we don’t know what to do about it. Click to Read.

Andrea Johnson, Your Black Love: Can a Book Build a Marriage? -I am a lover of books of all kinds, but lately I can’t seem to pick up a paperback without the words “How to...” on them. I’ve read that it’s a common trait of first borns to want to be right, do all things perfectly and of course be the first one to do anything of importance. We take pride in having knowledge and using that know-how to boss people around. Right? But somewhere in all the know-it-all bravado, there lies a bit of insecurity. Why do I need a book to tell me how to dress, how to win any argument, or how to keep a man interested? (Which by the way, I have not been a victim of…I just read Cosmo like most women...kidding.)  Click to Read.

Dr. Aris Winger: Your Black Sports: Is Anyone Paying Attention? - Let me take you back EIGHT years ago to when Tiger Woods had the greatest golf season EVER. Can you believe that was so long ago? Daunte Henderson, Your Black Brothers: It's Not About You Today Sweety....Tuesday Works Better - Its things like half-off drinks for ladies, free admission for women until 11pm, or if you wear tight jeans you get in for free that irks me. Whenever I go to the club its “Ladies Night” or something to the extent of women being catered to that night. Women make the club an enjoyable place for males, so from a business standpoint I understand. I mean if I wanted to see guys then I would’ve called my friends over for a game of NBA 2K8 on XBOX 360 on a Saturday night. It’s not the fact that women get in for free or they get their drinks half off on one night. It’s EVERY NIGHT for the most part. When is it about me?  Click to Read.

Gregory Moore, Your Black Politics: Tavis Smiley Got What He Deserved - SAN ANTONIO -- If you haven't read, seen or heard by now, Tavis Smiley took some major heat the past two weeks for blasting Sen. Barack Obama's unwillingness to show up at last Saturday's State of the Black Union symposium that was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. If you haven't heard, seen or read any of the stories that have come forth you have missed a lesson in why it is important to be more above reproach and less egotistical when it comes to dealing with the Black community. But for those of you who haven't hard, seen or read the stories, let me give you a quick recap of what has transpired.  Click to Read.

Michelle Yeager, Your Black Life: Black Women, Success and Money - I recently went out to dinner with some of my old friends from college. My date, my date's fraternity brother, and the guy's wife were at the table with me. We started talking about home ownership, money and jobs. The conversation then drifted to the role of a woman in a relationship and her financial contributions to the relationships. The married guy said that his wife would never make more money than he. Pastor Kelly Oglesby:  What About Our Families?  Why Black People Should Consider Adopting - Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrupt us. James 1:27 (NLT).  Our children deserve the best. Unfortunately, too often we associate the best with material accumulations rather than with the opportunity to mature in safe, loving, violence and substance free two parent home. Statistically, African American children are less likely than Asians, Hispanics, and Whites to grow up in the home of their biological parents.  Click to Read.

Sheri Mitchell:  Your Black Politics:  Shame On You Hillary Clinton! The last few weeks I have just been sitting back, watching the latest in the race for the Presidential nomination. Daunte Henderson, Your Black Brothers: I Can Speak English, How About You? -Math has always been one of the hardest subjects for me to grasp. I've never been an x=3 type of guy. English has always been one of my stronger points. I figured if I wanted to run my mouth all the time then I might as well do it a high level. I'm frustrated at the companies, schools and other people who hire "people who don’t speak English" well. Our country is built on immigration (Whites, Blacks, Mexicans...etc), so I have no beef with people who have a different background or dialect. My beef lies in the fact that I have to talk to people who don’t speak English well on a “CUSTOMER SERVICE” line for a company that’s in “America”.  Click to Read.

Dr. Peniel Joseph, Your Black Scholar: From Black Power to Barack Obama - Barack Obama’s meteoric rise from charismatic senator to national phenomenon to presidential contender reveals the complex evolution of black politics since the civil rights and Black Power era. Obama’s candidacy is particularly noteworthy during this primary season and election year, which comes on the fortieth anniversary of 1968, a year when effort to transform American democracy ran headlong into a violent defense of white supremacy. Born in 1961, the same year Freedom Riders faced prison to desegregate interstate travel across the nation, Obama remains aloof to the culture wars—whether based in racial, gender or ethnic solidarity—that remain a cornerstone of the legacy of the 1960s. “I think America is still caught in a little bit of a time warp,” Obama confessed to Newsweek last summer. “The narrative of black politics is still shaped by the ’60s and black power.” Indeed.  Click to Read.

Daunte Henderson, Your Black Brothers:  If OJ Has a Pair of Gloves, then Why Doesn't McDonalds? - It's 5 in the morning in beautiful East St.Louis.

1. Lisa, a stripper, takes her night's worth of salary home and counts it.
2. Most of the dollar bills have been saturated with vaginal juice, alcohol, sweat and possibly various forms of communicable diseases.
3. Lisa is hungry after a 10 hour shift, so she decides to fulfill her hunger at McDonalds. She takes 3.50 of her $500 worth of work and buys an Egg McMuffin Value Meal.
4. Ernest, the McDonalds morning crew manager, takes these storied bills and places them in his register.
5. Ernest proceeds to make the Egg McMuffin Value Meal with NO GLOVES ON.

Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, Your Black Scholar: Barack Obama - Not My Kind of Hope:  From the beginning of his presidential campaign, which unofficially began with the release of his second book The Audacity of Hope, Senator Barack Obama has been positioned as an underdog against the Clinton machine. Now, with polls showing him in a virtual dead heat with Sen. Hillary Clinton, the media has constructed his early success as a David-over-Goliath narrative that proves that ordinary people have the power to slay the beast that is Washington through a radical politics of hope. Unfortunately, the Obama campaign has perverted the concept of hope by wedding it to a dangerous politics of compromise, concession and cunning.  Click to Read.

Asha Castleberry, Your Black Global News: Lack of Electricity Threatens to Keep Africa in Poverty - Once the sun goes down in Africa, about 75% of the population lives in a world of darkness. Day-to-day living conditions suffer from no electricity. Time-management is crucial because people are unable to cook or clean and simply forced to sleep. Electricity is one of the top most expensive necessities in Africa, and many residents are denied this basic staple. Typically, public facilities, such as hospitals and schools can only afford electricity for fifteen days out of the month. According to the World Bank News Broadcast, Sub-Saharan Africans use seven times less electric power than people in high income countries. Up to 250 million Africans have no easy access to electricity and are left to use kerosene lamps or burning fire.  Click to Read.

Vera Richardson, Your Black Politics:  I Believe in Obama's Hope and Change Message, Part 1: I suggest that those of you who are judging Obama’s tactics and motives so harshly channel your energy in getting answers from the Bush Administration. In 2001 Vice President Cheney and his buddies in oil, gas, and energy businesses met behind closed doors. After meeting for months the elite group announced a National Energy Plan. For years Cheney has refused lower court orders to turn over the records of the energy policy task force and/or a list of who attended the meetings.Click to Read.

Your Black Brothers, Daunte Henderson: If Obama was dark-skinned - As the primaries and debates become more and more intense I realize how I'm so out of touch with politics. I've never followed politics and honestly I don’t really have an interest in it. I'm voting for God, he's ran my life without a problem. I'm listening to the conversations amongst my peers and it seems that most of them are voting for Obama. He "Appears" to be the best candidate for some people. I wonder how much of that interest in Obama is "biased". Some of my African American counterparts will lie to me and say "Oh I like his stance on blah blah" but in reality you just want him to win because he's Black.  Click to Read.

Kevin D. Johnson (Editor - AUC Magazine): Your Black College: Barack Obama - Are You Ready for Change? - Depending on your political persuasion, the title of this piece connotes a change for the better or a change for the worse. To those Democrats who believe this country needs a new face in the White House, Barack Obama seems to be the clear choice, but to those who are staunch Republicans, Obama's unprecedented political success would be best described in homonymic terms: an abomination.   Click to Read.

Vera Richardson: Your Black Love - Should She Divorce Him? -On Wednesday Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded for forgiveness from his wife and constituents. The televised apology was made from their family’s church the Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ. His plea for forgiveness included: “Finally, and most important, I want to make a public apology to my wife, Carlita, who I fell in love with when I was 19 years old. We decided to build a family together and we did that. Our marriage has not been perfect, but it has been great."  Click to Read.

Dr. Aris Winger, Your Black Brothers: Do We NEED to Be Around Each Other? - So it finally happened. I had been teaching at this southern rural college for 3 and a half years. I was the only black tenure track professor. There were only dozens of black students out of the population of 1000. But there they were last Friday at my door ready to change things...
We had a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on campus and that provided the spark. The spark wasn't unusual. MLK day celebrations definitely will (and should) do that. But this time it seems like it's going to turn into a wildfire.

Daunte Henderson:  Old School - The Young vs. The Old - It really irks me to no end to hear old people say, “When I was young such and such happened”. I know that groceries used to cost less than two dollars, I know school used to be a 30 mile walk each way and I know that clothes used to be cheaper. All of this I know, yet I still have to give my elders their just due. Their stories keep me in touch with my present if that makes any sense. The wisdom that elders pass on to me might seem very useless and redundant at times because it sounds like that cassette tape that you’re mother plays every time she cleans up the house.  Click to Read.

Michelle Yeager: Your Black Life - My First Love: My senior year of high school I went to UNC to visit. This guy took a group of us to observe a college class. He sent me a note asking which schools I had been accepted. I thought nothing else about him. Advance forward to my first week on campus my freshman year. The two large dorms, Morrison and Hinton James, had a party for the freshman. Same random guy was there as a counselor. After the party he volunteered to walk my friend and I back to the dorm. Your Black Politics:  Barack Obama is Our Jesse Jackson from 1984 and 1988, Syreeta McNeal, CPA JD - I believe that we should not distance ourselves or tarnish the memory of those who paved the way for us to achieve the success we have today. People are making a big deal (including the media) of President Clinton’s comparison of Senator Obama’s win in South Carolina to Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr.’s presidential run for the Democratic Party in 1984 and 1988. Most pundits (including CNN Contributor, Roland Martin) are saying this is a racial jab.  Click to Read.

I forgot to mention she was White but that shouldn’t matter. Should it? Click to Read.

Michelle Yeager, Your Black Life: My Closet Runneth Over - Okay, I will be the first to admit that I have A LOT of clothes.  I really do.  But it's not completely my fault. Part of it is because I haven't grown for the past decade.  I've been the same height and weight since college so I never really have a reason to throw a good piece of clothing away.  The other part of the 'reason for the season' is my mother.  My mother and I wore the same clothing size and same shoe size.  Click to Read.

Your Black Scholar:  Dr. Cyrus Ellis - Reflections on Martin Luther King's Birthday - I am writing this on the eve of the Observance of Dr. King's Holiday. Sheri Mitchell:  How Do You Combat a Combative Ex-President? - Lately when I turn on the news I wonder who is really running for President, Bill or Hillary. I'm sure the candidates would like to know who they are up against, it might make it easier to figure out a game plan. Never in history have we had a former President of the United States actively campaigning for their spouse. Of course it isn't just any President, but one of the most popular presidents the Democratic Party has ever had. Now, Bill Clinton isn't just making a few appearances and shaking a few hands....he is lashing out and getting riled up. Somehow, these tirades are actually helping his wife's campaign. Your Black Life: My Braids, By Donisha Adams - Hair texture and hairstyles have been complex issues in the African American community. Some of us prefer to straighten our hair, while others prefer to “go natural.” No one is right or wrong, but the causes for these modifications may be deeply rooted in American society and socialization theories. American society is driven by white standards of beauty—that blond hair, blue eyed and model thin look. Media perpetuates this ideology in movies, television shows and books. They teach us that there is only one way to look, well if you want to be successful anyway. Click to Read More.

Your Black Advice:  Ben Merens, Wisconsin Public Radio - Uni-Tasking, The Art of Focused Listening:  People are dying to be heard.  In a day and age where multi-tasking is all the rage, I’m here to tell you to stop it.  Don’t try and do more than one task at a time. If you'll recall not too long ago he rounded up several Black business leaders and demanded an end to the estate tax.  Mr. Johnson and his hand picked group even went so far as to take out newspaper ads of their own, Johnson's group attacked the tax for taking monies away from the African American community. Your Black Health:  When Death Comes Knocking- The Reality of HIV/AIDS for Black Men and Women - Dwan Abrams - I learned a long time ago that when death comes knocking, there’s nowhere to hide. When the AIDS epidemic hit and spread faster than a prostitute’s legs, I remember feeling a sense of panic and urgency. Panic, because the disease affected anyone and everyone. And urgency due to an overwhelming desire to know. Like most people, I was scared…more like horrified at the thought of possibly having contracted a deadly disease due to something I had done.  I’ll never forget the day that Ervin “Magic” Johnson announced on national television that he was HIV positive. My heart sank, and I cried so hard my tear ducts became dry. Although I was devastated by the news, I couldn’t help but think about my uncle. My uncle was an openly gay male. I became physically ill thinking that he could be infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Click to Read.

Rev. Al Sharpton - Statement on Hillary Clinton's Win in New Hampshire: I congratulate Senator Clinton on a surprising and significant victory in New Hampshire last night. Rev. Al Sharpton  - The winning of the Iowa Caucuses by Barack Obama is an historic event. It shows that America has a hunger for change and can come together to make that change happen. Though I have not made an endorsement in this race, I clearly see this as a positive occurrence at this point in American history. Unfortunately, some of the divisive and archaic forces in American politics are trying to divide us by saying that Obama’s victory in some way translates into an end of civil rights activism by people like me.  Click to Read More.
