George Lucas: Hollywood Didn’t Want to Fund ‘Red Tails’ Because It Was All Black

George Lucas made an appearance on The Daily Show last night and said what most black people in Hollywood have been saying for years: It’s hard to get funding for black movies because they’re, well – black. It’s not because black scripts are poorly written that they are difficult to fund, but because there’s no role in an all black script for a white lead.

“It’s because it’s an all-black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all…I showed it to all of them and they said no. We don’t know how to market a movie like this” said Lucas.

The motion picture “Red Tails” , which opens January 20 and stars Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr, tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in the segregated armed forces during World War II. In addition to having an all black cast, the movie was directed by black director Anthony Hemingway. Lucas also predicted that if “Red Tails” does good box office numbers during its opening week, it’ll probably be easier to get funding for movies with all black casts in the future.

Wow, Thanks Mr. Lucas for the film , we needed that I wish Ice Cube can take a page from you. After watching this I’m shocked about Hollywood not supporting real American Heros. This is sad.

Some of the men in this movie don’t support all black outside of acting, so why the hell should Hollywood!

He is not saying anything that black directors/producers have not been saying for years…why do we take it more seriously coming from Lucas than from Lee?

Seriously. And notice they couldn’t do the WWII code talkers movie without a white lead. Same old, same old. Was Lucas shocked, or was he trying to help funders get over it? Both? Whatev.

Kaye Wise Whitehead: We take it more seriously coming from people like Lucas than Lee because we as people suffer from the Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome more commonly called the “slave mentality.”
The racist Jews have a lock on everything that goes on in Hollywood and that also is nothing new.
So I ask you what is the comprehensive game plan to dismantle and dislodge all of the systemic and individual racism in Hollywood. Do we have a plan B?

We always knew it, Kaye. It’s ironic that Hollywood still found it difficult to distribute and market a movie made by the man who created the biggest film franchise ever, Star Wars. If HE couldn’t easily get this film (which he financed, by the way), then what chance does a young black filmmaker have of getting his/her film made? Very little.

I’m tired of seeing black men demean themselves by dressing in drag. Time to do what legendary filmmaker Oscar Micheaux did, and to make films for us, about us, and financed by us. Tyler Perry already has a studio in place in atlanta; there are tons of actors ready to work, and BET/TVOne/Centric are viable cable outlets to air these works. Anyone game?
