Racist? Image of Michelle Obama Was Based on Marie Antoinette

A racist image of First Lady Michelle Obama that surfaced on a right wing blog appears to be a based on a portrait of Marie Antoinette by
Jean-Baptiste André Gautier-Dagoty.

The racist image transplants the first lady’s face and hue onto the image of the French queen and adds a big, black and muscular arm to boot. The doctored image also changes the position of the right hand, with the image of Michelle Obama pointing at the globe, whereas the painting of Marie Antoinette has her hand resting on the globe.

The image of the redone painting initially appeared on the right wing blog Gateway Pundit, and was joined with a clip of the first lady’s recent appearance on the Nickelodeon show iCarly, where a cast member jokingly referred to the first lady as “your excellency”, to which the script has the first lady reply, “I kinda like it”.

If Antoinette’s entire body is covered up and her left arm is left out, her arm appears to be the arm of a woman. If First Lady Obama’s body is covered up and the left arm in the picture is left out, the arms appears to be a man’s arm. There is nothing racist here. The racist thing would be not to lampoon the political class. Every president from John Adams on and nearly every first lady from Andrew Jackson on has been parodied. To treat this first family differently would be the racist act.

I worked in DC during the Reagan and Bush years and each Friday afternoon the Whitehouse would fax a collections of that week’s political cartoons to the director’s offices of each of the agencies. It was all of them, pro and con the administration. That crowd could appreciate good quality humor even at their own expense.

The Obama folks could learn a lesson from that crowd.

I would like to point out that while it may appear that when the presidential family does anything it is portrayed by the media in the extreme. Also it is notworthy to mention that a lot of the clothing the family gets is given not bought so why not wear what you have to any even to show how thankful you are to receive them. A lot of the vacations are budgeted for and plans are set forth to ensure their safety albeit at additonal cost if the area that they are to reside call for it. Formal residents of the white house also made trips that were frowned upon and I am insulted that any form of media thinks its remotely acceptable to compare the first lady with Marie Antoinnette. Its is not tactful nor is it accurate. How ever did the media believe it would not be taken as racism in the first place knowing that not many have studied the history or remember it enough to draw the conclusive comparison…some days its beyond comprehension and is reprehensible behavior.

First of all – this picture is NOT racist, it is SATIRE. It’s not commenting on her ethnicity, it is commenting on spending habits during a recession.

Second of all – I think this is a terrible use of satire. You would have to be truly ignorant to think that the First Lady of the United States is buying her clothes on taxpayer’s money. The Obamas are millionaires – if Michelle is wearing expensive clothes it is because she either paid for them herself or (if they are designer) they were GIVEN to her because of the publicity the line will recieve by having someone like her seen with them on. I know that some people are going to say “Well she pretends to be thrifty and then wears expensive clothes around” – well I, for one, do NOT want the wife of the President walking around in ill-fitting Walmart outfits while she is representing the United States! She is absolutely right in encouraging the American public to spend within their means – her means just happen to be higher than most of ours, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

Third – Whoever made this image obviously has no real historical knowledge. Marie Antoinette was, in fact, incredibly charitable. She also DRASTICALLY REDUCED the French Royal expenditures and household staff. Her children were made to give their allowance to the less fortunate. In fact, aside from her early teenage years as queen, Marie Antoinette was actually harassed for dressing too simply for a Queen. The real reason for the financial deficit that her government found itself in was the Revolutionary War - during which the French greatly financed the American cause. So really, without the generosity of Marie Antoinette and her husband, there may not be a United States for ANYONE to be President/First Lady of. If you know the facts about Marie Antoinette you’d know that no image comparing someone to her should be considered insulting. Obviously the artist who creating the picture of the First Lady was not aware of this.

I’m still trying to figure out how this can possibly be called racist. It’s clearly an attempt for the person who did it to make a statement on his/her opinion regarding Michelle Obama’s frequent and lavish (at taxpayer expense) vacations by comparing her to Marie Antoinette and the excess with which she’s remembered in history. The muscular arm is a reference to Michelle Obama’s very toned (I wish mine were that toned) arms. Where does racism come into play? I believe it’s racist to say or make folks feel that she’s off limits to criticism because she’s black. Everytime someone criticizes either she or the President they’re called racists. People have been criticizing presidents from the start. It’s life, it’s politics. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with folks having opinions and beliefs about our country, about politics, and about how things should be done.

Anyone who knows the history of Marie Antoinette can see that the comparisons here are totally non-racist – whether one agrees with it or not. The same with King Louis XVI and President Obama’s comparison to him.

I think the problem is that some folks don’t know who Marie Antoinette or King Louis XVI were or why the comparisons were made – they just see Michelle Obama’s face on a painting of a queen and see “uppity black woman.” But that is not at all what these images are supposed to depict. They are valid non-racist comparisons.

That really also says a lot about our education system, too, that folks don’t know who Marie Antoinette or King Louis XVI were. Is the French Revolution no longer taught in schools?
