Dr. Boyce: America Celebrates New Unemployment Numbers, but It Got Worse for Black People

black unemployment got worse last monthby Dr. Boyce Watkins

Various media outlets are celebrating the fact that November and December were very good months in the battle against chronic unemployment.  This month, overall unemployment dropped from 8.7% to 8.5% and 200,000 jobs were created.  This is a big win for the Obama Administration, which has taken heat for economic problems.  This is the second  straight month where the overall data has gotten better for the US economy as a whole.

But one untold story within the numbers is what has happened to black America.  In both November and December, nearly all of the gains in unemployment went to white Americans, with black American unemployment actually getting worse.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, black unemployment rose once again from a startling 15.5% to an even worse 15.8%.  This is the second-straight increase, after last month’s rise from 15% to 15.5%.

Black women experienced the worst of the unemployment outcomes for this month, with their jobless rate rising from 13% to 13.9%.  Black teens saw their unemployment rate rise from a tragic 36.9% to an even worse 42.1%.   Black males, surprisingly, saw a decline in their unemployment rate (16.4% to 15.7%), but continue to have the worst unemployment rate of any gender/racial category in the country.

The racial disparity in unemployment is not the kind of information that will be revealed in “mainstream” media, cable news or network television.  Even MSNBC, the liberal organization that they are, would likely ignore such data because it undermines their desire to paint the Obama Administration in a positive light. Anyone who gave me flack for the piece I wrote about Melissa Harris Perry joining MSNBC would be wise to remember that most news networks and political leaders only care so much about racial inequality.

But we must speak to this matter and realize one important, fundamental fact:  The current economic plan is not working for black America, and it has not worked for the last three years.  This is not a direct challenge to the Obama Administration, but they certainly must take responsibility for promoting a racialized version of trick down economics by making it clear that they have never felt compelled to promote targeted economic policy for those hit hardest by the recession.

In the last calendar year, white unemployment has dropped from a relatively mild 8.3% to an even rosier 7.5%.  At the same time, black unemployment has risen from a 15.2% to 15.8% today.  When the recession is over, black unemployment will likely still be worse than white unemployment is right now.  Most hilariously, black people will be expected to cheer for the numbers that currently have white folks rioting in the streets – the same 7.5% that makes Tom Smith furious at President Obama will be fine for Shaniqua Jackson.  Such disparities make no sense and speaks clearly to racial inequality in America.

It’s time for a change in policy and time for us to start speaking up.  The media isn’t going to talk for us, so we must demand our own voice.  Also, inequality should be confronted squarely by our political leaders in order for our country to move forward.  If politicians aren’t acting to remove economic inequality, educational inequality and the effects of mass incarceration, they don’t deserve the African American vote.  This goes for Democrats, Republicans and everything in between – we deserve to feed our families too.

What is the root cause?  Racial discrimination or a combination of lack of education and a general reduction in government jobs (which are held at a higher proportion by black women than by anyone else)?

We are not helping the country by being negative about this Obama-positive employment news.  Do you really want Newt or Mitt in the Whitehouse?  Will they help black causes more?  Or, does having the epitome of white oppression in the form of Newt Gingrich as president help you, Dr Boyce, preserve your franchise on “angry blackness.”  Does this divisiveness help your ratings, sell your books, get you more airtime?

Will it be worth it if you deter turnout for President Obama to the point that he loses the election?

I have to agree with some of the logic.
I have always questioned these numbers about the Black unemployment.  Is it really Blacks being unemployed or is it Blacks not being able to keep a job?  I have a friend that cleans airplanes.  He told me they always have openings at his job and they work 12 hour days. The company can’t keep Black folks because they do not come to work and they don’t want to work so hard.  When a man can go and live with his mother or girlfriend then why should he have to work hard?  He can be a statistic and claim there isn’t enough work.

Union, I agree with you. Dr. Watkins is a total disgrace and a whining parrot when it comes to his endless criticism of President Obama over black unemployment. Sometimes, his diatribe is so irrational when one analyzes the total context and related factors that have long contributed to the unemployment disparity between blacks and other races in America. Nearly thirty years ago, factory jobs where many working class blacks held employment began disappearing. Many of those jobs were lost to technology, and many others were lost to outsourcing. For the black working class, those were decent paying industrial jobs. The loss of those jobs in many cases turned once thriving communities to ghost towns. The question is however, with the changing labor environment and demand for highly skilled technology oriented workers on the rise, how did black people as a whole adapt to that change? Did we recognize the trend immediately and proactively educate, equip, train, and acquire the necessary skill set in order for us to transition into the new labor environment? Or did we just waste time running our mouths like Dr. Watkins who offers nothing but points fingers at everyone else for our employment predicament?

There used to be a time when we had wise black people, both men and women. What we have today parading themselves as voices of the black communities are a total disgrace. These are men who are clueless on when to speak, how to speak, and when to hold their tongue. There is no wisdom, maturity, or diplomacy in their callous expression. They think just because they have a forum, and the ‘freedom of expression’, (granted them by white folks) that they have a license to offer their filth as serious commentary. Only a fool will find a way to blame this President for high unemployment figures in the black community. Maybe the likes of Dr. Watkins and his cronies can show us black unemployment stats prior to President Obama assuming office. If it is a commonly held view that government does not create jobs but the enabling environment so job creators can create jobs, what then is Dr. Watkins’ problem? It is this over expectation of government intervention that gives racist white pigs the audacity to insult and ridicule us as a welfare dependent race.

In 2008, Fox News, just one bigoted white owned news media outlet almost derailed then candidate Obama’s election bid with lies, misinformation, propaganda, and race baiting. Fox news affiliates and other conservative radio stations that rule the AM airwaves joined that anti Obama assault that gained momentum and swayed a lot of so called independents. Where was the black owned National News media to counter the lies and smear against candidate Obama? Where were the black owned national T.V stations like CBS, NBC, FOX, TELEMUNDO, CNN, MSNBC, etc, to set the records straight? That singular but important task was left to MSNBC (another white owned establishment) to defend President Obama against the vultures at Fox. Isn’t that a shame? Media Midgets like Dr. Watkins and his cronies were reduced to their usual 1 minute opinion slot whenever a CNN political news host found it useful to have them on a 3 man/woman debate segment which typically lasts 3 mins. max. Considering the donkey years Dr. Watkins has been in the news business, where is his T.V station that hires black reporters, black producers, black editors, black program directors, etc? Talk of a puppet master!!!!!

I have enjoyed your thoughtful reply.  It is time for all Americans (black, white, conservative and liberal – anyone at all who cares about ALL Americans) to rally around this President and make sure he gets a second term to continue what has been started.  Granted, President Obama is not perfect, but it is a big tent and a multitude of interests to consider.  I have more confidence in his ability and motives than anyone the Republicans have running.

i did..i said black people.  sell out negroes like you are no longer needed.

      • Val

Stop the rant and lecturing and just tell us where you disagree with the statistics revealed in Dr. Boyce’s article or just shut up because the way you ranting, you might have a heart attack.

The first paragraph in your comment was indeed sensible because it was a question related to the the article itself, the rest of your comments kind of misses the point. My advice to you is this, political decisions don’t go with sentiments, color or emotions because when it does, i bet you, it doesn’t end well for the public. Secondly, this notion that because BHO is black, then automatically, he is going to serve you better than any other color is a crap Mentality in itself because if everybody plays with this kind of Mentality, BHO would not have been the Prez. So get over that please. So, for a voter, this is what politics is all about, it is using the ballot into influencing decisions and policies that benefits your people and your community, period, because at the end of the day, that is what counts. This is where i envy the JEWS. They don’t just get it, they get it all the time. I don’t want anybody to advocate entitlements and benefits for me at the expense of creating opportunities for me. Lastly, please, don’t go attacking people (characters) for stating facts, the article about the unemployment rate wasn’t Dr. Boyce’s opinion but statistics of the BLS, so, if you want to have a fight with somebody, Dr. Boyce is not your guy.

You need to give more specifics when stating this information. We need to know what are the reasons, for instance education or incarceration for some. Are there older workers who may be displaced and cannot find jobs, and I am a bit tired of hearing us compared to white people all the time. What about other nationalities as well. The blacks who have found jobs, what is the info on the types of jobs they have found. I am tired of the same old headlines designed to make us feel worse about our people. Give us real information that can be used to garner strengh, we cannot go on hating and blaming everyone else.

Okay we know the stats, now let’s get to the root of the problem. Education? Discrimination? Criminal records? All of that could be the reason why the unemployment numbers are so high for blacks? Also are focusing on the blacks that actually don’t want to work?
