NFL Player Gives Entire Salary to Send Kids to College

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

Remember the 1984 song, “Let’s hear it for the boy”?  Well, we need to hear it for the man, Braylon Edwards, who now plays for the San Francisco 49ers.  This year, Edwards is going to make good on a promise to send 100 kids to college with $10,000 scholarships if they maintain a 2.5 GPA or better.  He also told them to do 15  hours of community service.

Out of the 100 kids who were given the offer, 79 of them completed their end of the bargain.  Now, Edwards is going to have to deliver nearly $1 million in scholarship money to the kids, which matches the salary that he is going to earn this year by playing for the 49ers.

Edwards made the promise during his rookie season in 2005.  I would expect that he thought he’d be making more money by now, and one can only hope that he has sponsors to back his pledge.  But in spite of the fact that his promise might have been a naive challenge, he deserves attention for being an athlete doing something good for the community.  In that regard, I applaud Edwards with every ounce of my being.

“Without this scholarship, I probably wouldn’t be here,” said Bowling Green freshman David Gholston.

Edwards worked with his mother to create the Advance 100 program.   They say that Edwards’ football abilities are a way for them to use their blessings to help others.   While they didn’t expect so many kids in the Cleveland area to meet the criteria, they still plan to keep their commitment.

“I’m supposed to give people a chance like I was given a chance,” Edwards said.

This bold move by Edwards tells us two things:  First, it reminds us of the awesome power of professional athletes to make a difference in the world in which they live.  Rather than being distracted by gold chains, rims and female attention, they can use the strength of their platforms to create avenues for others to be successful.  When 79 inner city kids go to college, thousands of lives are made better in the process, since our successes and failures have multiplicative ripple effects on our children, our family members and nearly every person with whom we interact.  An educated and productive citizen has a markedly different impact on the world than one who has been trained to be a menace to society.

Second, this incident reminds us that not all of our kids are choosing to go to hell in a hand basket.  When given a chance to go to college, the MAJORITY of these kids chose education over the other things they could have done.  Our kids WANT to be successful and they have a deep desire to be educated.  It is only mass media that works night and day to turn good kids into thugs.

So, in light of recent public remarks about poor black kids not wanting to do well, or stories about young black men being shot over a piece of candy, there are stories like this one that remind us that most of us are choosing to do the right thing.

Way to go Braylon, I’m proud of you.  Maybe the athletes who compete with you on the field will compete off the field by trying to match your feat.   There are millions of kids who need our support, and you just won your first Super Bowl.

We need more of this kind of committment to the future of black children.  What we do NOT need is more people like Beverly Hall.

Our tax money along with our nation’s resources and other revenues, should have been going to maintain our infrastructure, education, and health. Instead the money continues to find its way into the offshore bank accounts of the elite 1% and into wars, which also create wealth for the 1% at our expense, of course!

If the Anglo-elite and their cohorts weren’t such greedy sociopaths there would be no need for us to hear about an individual benevolent taxpayer having to foot the bills for scholarships for our desperate youth! Most of our sufferings would barely exist!

Everything is topsy-turvy in this country because of the Anglo-elite, their cohorts and sidekicks. These thugs and criminals are cut from the very same people who stole this land, murdered and enslaved millions! Do you really believe that they just stopped pillaging and closed shop? All of the evidence and examples of brainwashing and pillaging us proves otherwise. They have been pillaging the world for centuries, and have been siphoning from us in various ways, while having us believe this is the way it is supposed to be! Look around you. How mentally conditioned do you see those around you?

Now they are pulling out all of the stops and we see them draining our tills in every possible way! They’ve taken the lion’s share of our wealth and now they are draining the reserves by raising the prices we pay on all of the things we should be enjoying from our taxes! They have fixed it so that they don’t even have to pay taxes, but we do! Instead we get fabricated wars and corporation executives too big to fail!

They can live anywhere in the world, their wealth and various properties are safely tucked away from harm. They have no allegiance to this or any country. Their only allegiance is to their own greed of power and wealth! Psychopaths that they are, they do not want the populace to be intellectual or to advance in any way! It is easier to abuse us if most of us are dumb, ignorant, stupid, brainwashed and poorly educated, if educated at all!

Everything  we are suffering, they definitely planned, and are purposely initiating! They attack us and blame it on someone else so that they can attack and pillage there too using our wealth. They attack us with ignorant people they pay with our tax monies!

Now, a small percentage of “black” youth will get ‘poor’ college education, but even a greater percentage will not find jobs, or be locked into horrible prisons, or fight in these fake wars of elite pillagers! Not their children..Ours!

So it is a great philanthropic gesture that this one player made, but he, or any individual should not have to do it that way! I can understand why racist “whites” wouldn’t want to use tax money to educate “blacks”, but too many brainwashed blacks side with these vile evil whites..Which again shows the level of assimilation, brainwashing, and lack of proper education and ‘enlightenment of truth’ among the black community!

What ignorant nonsense is being spouted here. Those comments should be removed. This is a celebratory story. No debate, no question, no controversy, but a do-right brother putting himself out there to educate and give back. Nothing needs to be said but right on!

I have to commend this player for his commitment to the promise he made to the college attendees. While I do admire his dedication to bringing this issue to light, I feel as though this wouldn’t even be a problem if we had more of our taxes going to supporting domestic causes as opposed to foreign aid, we’d be more able to help our own people be competitive in this industry and global market.

Wow what a powerful statement this makes and how proud it makes me feel to see a brother who is making that ridiculous amount of money playing professional sports being committed enough to earmark a chunk of it to help further promotion the higher education of black youngsters. If only more of our monied entertainers, athletes etc. were so inclined to feel a true connection with their community and willing to invest some of their millions in ensuring them a more promising future. Hats off to Braylon Edwards and all those like him who recognize from whence they sprang and believe it is their responsibility to lend an honest and loving hand toward the enhanced develop;ment of African-American youth.

I was an educator in Cleveland for some time. I am really proud of him because I no the struggle that these children have to go through to graduate in a city with a roughly 29% graduation rate. May God bless him. This is a really good thing that he is doing. Uplift is the game of the season and he is surely a very good player. Thanks.

“know”. I could not get the system to allow me to edit.

Let’s keep this effort alive.  If Braylon Edwards’ resources get over taxed, many average community members should be given an opportunity to step up.  I woulds be willing and I expect many others will too.

You go Braylon!  Hope others will join your effort and all say, “We got your back”.
