Girl’s Basketball Team Suspended For Chanting the N-Word Before Every Game

A girl’s basketball team in Buffalo has been suspended for chanting the n-word before every basketball game.  Tyra Batts, the only black person on the team, spoke up against the tradition and said that she was shut down by the rest of her teammates.

According to Batts, the girls would make a circle, say a prayer and then say, “One, two, three, nigger!”

The coaches and whatever teachers that were aware of this should be fire. It’s hard to beleive that these ignorant white racist girls could shout that word as a cheer at the beginning of each game and no adult at the school heard it.

    • Lisa

my problem with this…if the players were black (using the n word) this would not be news…

where is the outrage when we using it…

      • Kimbrown

lisa u r so right and this is more of the problem than her using the n word!

      • ebony_man2010

But the players are NOT black and this is NOT that situation. I don’t know of any poll or survey that says that black people support other black people using this word publicly. All you are doing Lisa and Kimbrown is deflecting to defend the ugly behavior of these white racist girls.

        • Albertak

Thank you Ebony! The use of the N word continues to be a problem across the spectrum and no one is running away from that, but the behavior of this group of high schoolers has taken this insult to another level and it should be highlighted. Hopefully discussions of this madnitude will further send a message that this word is not going to be tolorated on any front, regardless to who utters it. THE USE OF THE N WORD IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

        • Lisa

my question was not to excuse or minimize the behavior of the white players.  what they did is repulsive and inexcusable to say the least.

but if we as a people allow our own to use the word, then don’t be so surprised when you hear about young white girls using the word.  they get it from our black rappers.

i assure you if white rappers used the n word in their music we would not tolerate it.  but we allow black actors, comedians and rappers to do it daily.  WHY?

i stand behind what i said, if they were black this would not be news.  no one can refute that..it’s the truth!

  • Kimbrown

i agree with lisa if they were black it would not be a problem… whats the difference now?

    • Abdul

black people you are in denial.  you don’t want to hear it but lisa and kim are telling the truth.

  • monarchib

Really? if they were black it would not have been an issue? really? ten black girls chanting the “N” word would  not have been an issue? Really? a basketball team, all black, in a public school setting would not get in trouble for chanting The “N” word would not have been an issue because oh hey, their all black, no worries? really? Kimbrown and Lisa you really show your ignorance. Of all things to chant during a team pep up. They could have said one, two, three, team! or one, two, three, lets go. They could have chosen to say the team mascots name, but instead these ignorant cretins chose to say the “N” word. No from someone who played high school sports, our team would not have said the “N” word after a prayer we would always say the name of our high school mascot. And yes, I went to a predominantly white high school and the players on our team never said that word as a chant.  Kimbrown and Lisa, you two totally missed the boat. This isn’t about, oh if they were black this would not be an issue because it would have been an issue. The word is vile there was no reason for the team to chant the “N” word after the prayer (of all things to say after a prayer). The coach should be either suspended or fired. This created a very uncomfortable setting for the only black person on the team when your teammates, you know the ones who are suppose to have your back, are chanting a racial slur that is offensive to you and to the people in the stands. It is a shame really that in the year 2011 we still have ignorant people like this.

    • Albertak

You are wasting your time with the likes of Lisa and Kimbrown. They obviously subscribe to this kind of belittling and disrespect of another group. The word is vile, I don’t care who uses it. Suspension is too good for the coach, he or she should have put a stop to this when it first began. The coach should be suspended without pay for a specified timeframe or better yet fired!

      • Lisa

        god bless you….

    • Lisa

don’t distort my words..i never said the n word isn’t vile.  nor did i say the administrators shouldn’t be fired.

my point:  we cannot refute the fact that if black players used the n word there would be no outrage.  anecdotally speaking, there is no outrage from the black community when black rappers–athletes– actors–family–friends etc. use the n word.

talk about ignorance..some of our people go on white TV and defend the usage of the n word.   name another race that address one another openly in the public domain with a derogatory word given to them by their oppressors.

i refuse to be manipulated by the media every time a white person uses the n word.  like you i’m offended when whites use the n word. but they have been using it for over 300 years and i don’t envision a sudden eradication of the word from their vocabulary.

if we focus on the crux of the problem when talking about the n word.  we have to first look within the black community if we want other races to respect us as a people.

therefore it’s not about some ignorant young white girls using the n word they hear daily while listening to our black rappers.  if you didn’t know, white kids are the number one buyers of rap music.

don’t be angry with me..your anger should be at why isn’t this news if the players using the n word where all black….that’s the question!

if we continue to focus on what white people are saying instead of our own, then we are practicing in hypocrisy and disrespecting our ancestors by not showing the same outrage when our people use the n word.

“don’t distort my words..i never said the n word isn’t vile.  nor did i say the administrators shouldn’t be fired. ”

You’re right Lisa you NEVER said that in your earlier comment. Instead your first instinct was to attack black people as a monoliftic group. The people who say the n word publicly like the “rappers” you meantion are not “our black rappers”. They are NOT a reflection of ALL or MOST black Americans. You sound like some sort of white teabagger racist making that statement. Speaking as a older black man these black minstrel rappers or comedians who sell that word for profit don’t speak for me AND 99.9% of black Americans.

“your anger should be at why isn’t this news if the players using the n word where all black….that’s the question”

That’s NOT the question Lisa because that’s not the story.

Right or wrong within every ethnic and racial group certain lanuage is considered acceptable when directed at each other. But because black people have no control over mainstream media for decades the n word and other offensive imagines and sterotypes are shown and
allowed. This has nothing to do with black people supporting the n word
and other racist images. White Jewish men have historical dominated the entertainment and news media. You will never here the Jewish slur Kike used not because Jews don’t use it but because they protect their own image in the media. That’s where the hypocrisy is not with black people.

Usually on a black blog when you have to explain why the majority of black Americans don’t support calling each other the n word it’s with a white racist. It makes me wonder about the race of some of the people commenting here.

        • Lisa

          hey david…

i wasn’t talking to you in the post. but if you want to go there…i’m not sure what the hell you’re talking about.

unlike you i don’t have that slave mentality to blame the white man for any and everything wrong in the black community.

obviously as an older black man, you’re stuck in the 60′s with that blame the man attitude.

to help you come out of your cocoon…news alert–the daily crime perpetrated on blacks are done by other blacks, not by the white man. stop finding excuses…is the white man making us call one another the n word or wear sagging pants down to our knees?

get out of the 1600′s slavery is over (maybe i should say it in a way you can better understand —wezz free) and rid yourself of that slave mind in using the white man as a pretext to justify our ignorance and destructive behavior.

news alert again…you no longer have to use pigeons and smoke signals to gather information to guide you in your thinking.

you said you’re an older gentlemen…so in the words of fred g sanford, wake up and stop making excuses, “you big dummy!”

          • Albertak

why the insults? This was an intelligent conversation that deserved to be discussed further I thought, so why is it suddently taking this turn? I am sure others are glad to see this kind of reaction from you. Don’t let someone take you there… tell me where is the  intelligence in this kind of reaction to another’s opinion?
Although you share different view points from mine for the most part, until now I was actually enjoying you post.

          • Lisa

david stated that i sound like a white teabagger racist…agree i should have not allowed myself to go there.  appreciate the advice.

          • Albertak

No problem, but here is a challenge for you as well as the rest of us - let’s keep up the dialogue and engage others who has the ears of the masses. We began by addressing the issue whenever we hear the Rappers, Actors, whomever, let’s call them on it. I started this about a year ago every opportuntity I get, I say to them this (the use of the N word) is not acceptable. In fact, it is quite demeaning to our race. This name was given us by our Slave Masters, why are we embracing this name? Do we think so little of ourselves?  The use of this word must stop! This movement must begin with us.Oftentimes I google the culprits, whatever it takes I try to make direct contact, I’ve yet to get a response, we’ve got to start somewhere.
            Let’s continue this dialogue.

          • David2001

LOL You are a white teabagger racist!

          • David2001

@Lisa. Thank you for showing your true colors Lisa. I stand by my statement. You have a lot in common with white teabagger racist. Why would you take offense to that statement if you are spewing the same rhetoric of blaming blacks for white peoples bad behavior. We have enough bad behavior going on to take responsibility for let alone that of white people.

Most people who talk about “our rappers” usually are white racist who group all black people in the same category, just like you are attempting to do with me, this young lady Tyra Batts in the article and ALL black Americans. Remember Tyra Batts the basketball player who took a stand?? That’s what we were orignally commenting about???

“news alert again…you no longer have to use pigeons and smoke signals to gather information to guide you in your thinking”

I don’t need news alerts from someone who didn’t comprehend what you read in the article. No where in this article did it say that this young black girl Tyra Batts said the n word or supported saying the n word or anyone black at that school said the n word. Who’s the big dummy again????

“to help you come out of your cocoon…news alert–the daily

Where did black students at this school commit any crimes???? And duhhh remember I’m “Fred Sanford” the old guy here. ALL black men sag their pants??? WOW!!! LMAO!! All the stuff you are mentioning is NOT coming from my older generation. Who’s the big dummy again???

Once again you are grouping all black people in the same category the way a ignorant white teabag racist would. You go off on YOUR race NOT the white racist at this school. You wanted to come in here and pretend to be Ms Black Teabag Conservative and deflect attention back onto black people. I stand by my original comment that you are probably one of the many white racist that come on black blogs pretending to be black. NO one black even a black conservative could be that stupid. Apologize for the name calling but I call it like I see it.

If you are black Lisa the fact that you have so little respect for your race and for an ENTIRE older generation (u can insult me I don’t care) speaks volumes of what the real problem is with black American…THAT’S IF YOU’RE BLACK!

Whether you are a white racist or a black female your response was that of a immature ignorant child. So I’ll treat you like the immature child that you  you are. I’ll ignore you. lol

monarchib.  If they were all black the word would not have even been said.  I say to Batts don’t worry about foolish people like the girls on your team they do not determined your future. Did they breathe life into you today?  No.  So then they do not matter. People who have to call others names to make their selves feel important have low self esteem and truly they feel like they are the N-word.  Keep on doing what you’re doing and leave those girls right there in the trash where they come from.

    > As black people when are we going to remember that ” Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me ” If she would have been called the M word which stands for Millionaire this would NOT have affected her or you because she knows she’s not a Millionaire > WAKE UP TO WORDS <

    • Albertak

Now you know damn well this isn’t the same, you need to wake up to words. I can’t believe that you think this is ok to sing a racist insult. Last time I checked there was nothing racist nor derogatory about being called a millionaire.

      • Aquil

        > ‘ Now you know damn well this is not the same ” .> IT will be the same if I allowed my child thinking mind to think for and make comments for me but as a thinking man this is nothing new > This is something to make a sleep thinking person mad and cry out > ( You hurt my feeling ) > STOP IT AND WAKE UP TO WORDS <

There is no excuse for this, I am glad it is now known by the public. It would not be alright for them if they were black either. What has that term have to do with winning a game.

I applaud Tyra Batts for objecting to the use of the N-Word by the girl’s basketball team in Buffalo. How about the principal of the school and parents? How do they stand on this issue? Those girls need a good tongue lashing on the appalling use of the word. “IT’S ONE THING TO BE THOUGHT A FOOL THEN TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT.”
