  • More Powerful than Drugs

Dr. Watkins, you are 100% correct about the magnetic middle. But your solutions to defeat the magnetic middle are highly theoretical.

I don’t know if you have sons, or sons who have gone through adolescence, but peer pressure is often times more powerful than any drug on earth. And our young black men are fighting a system designed to oppress them. And they are in a culture where their favorite rappers glamorize irresponsible behavior.

I wish it was as simple as you said, to fight off the power of the magnetic middle. But you’re talking to a mom who tried both of your suggestions, and still lost her only son, due in part to the sheer power of the magnetic middle.

Dr. Watkins I have a 15 r.old grandson who report card was b’s and c’s. I told him that was good but I know he could do better. My grandson replied ” I don’t think so”. His aunt, my daughter was going to give him a $20 and changed her mind when she heard his reply. She gave him a $ 10. I said to her “I know you could do better”. She replied “I could but I can’t”. I told my grandson the only thing holding you back from doing better is you. I have always told him each grade level requires more out of him and his work ethic (studying) has alot to do with it. Another thing I have always told him is too long to ask for help when you don’t understand something. Ask for help immediately. The only dumb questions are the ones that are not asked.
