The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that approximately 24 million people in the United States are currently living with diabetes, amounting to about 8% of the population. African-Americans are particularly at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and carry a disproportionate burden of the disease. Interestingly, type 2 affects 12% of the African-American population. This is a significantly higher rate than in the Caucasian population.
