“I Don’t Know Any Black Entrepreneurs” Guy Gets Strong Response from Soledad O’Brien

soledad obrien comes back at michael arringtonby Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World

Soledad O’Brien’s public spanking of Tech Crunch founder Michael Arrington is, in my opinion, the stuff that legends are made of.  During a recent interview, Arrington, who prides himself on covering the tech industry in detail, actually told Soledad that he doesn’t know of any black entrepreneurs in the tech industry.  He then had the audacity to go on and say that he firmly believes that Silicon Valley is a meritocracy and that your level of success is determined by the size of your brain.

So, in Michael Arrington’s small and polluted reality, black people must not succeed because we have tiny brains and an even tinier level of ambition.   So, I’m sure Arrington would have a great pow-wow with Herman Cain, who also believes that if you’re not receiving riches and glory for your work, you only need to blame yourself. You already know my thoughts on the Arrington issue, as well as those of our political contributor Yvette Carnell, so let’s just talk about Soledad.

After she humiliated him in public, Arrington struck back at O’Brien in a way that reminds me of the infamous “&*$@ you set me up!” statement made by Marion Barry when he was busted smoking crack in a hotel room many years ago.  Rather than admitting that he made a mistake and could use this as an opportunity for reflection, Arrington responded with the arrogance of an entitled white male by arguing that O’Brien deliberately misled him during  the interview and that he did nothing wrong.

Well, Soledad wasn’t having any of it.  She came back at Arrington with a well-written blog post on CNN’s Financial page, where she said the following:

“As the conversation heated up, Arrington wrote a blog post — titled “Oh sh*t, I’m a racist” — in which he accuses me of bullying him in our 30 minute interview.

But the reality is very different. Our interview was pleasant, not the light-in-the-eyes third degree Arrington is now recounting in his blog. We were at an AOL office with the publicists who negotiated the interview.”

Soledad also notes the fact that Arrington accused CNN of being unprofessional in the way they approached the interview:

In his blog Arrington says CNN “went to great lengths to hide the topic of the interview.” He posts an early e-mail from one of my producers asking him for a general interview about the tech industry.

He omits the second e-mail we sent four days before the interview that spells out that the documentary is about a “group of entrepreneurs we are following who are participating in the NewMe accelerator. The first accelerator of its kind set up specifically for entrepreneurs of color. Their inspiring stories will be the focus of this CNN Black in America documentary.”

I didn’t ambush Arrington and I don’t think he’s a racist. He’s a realist.

Soledad goes easy on Arrington, to a point, by mentioning that only 1% of all tech companies are started by African Americans.  But she then asserts that many experts don’t buy Arrington’s argument that Silicon Valley is a meritocracy.  In fact, she mentions Duke University Professor Vivek Wadhwa, who actually encourages African Americans to find a white man to front for their companies.

This is where Soledad and I connect…..the idea that you need a white man fronting for you in order to be successful is directly indicative of black people possessing a form of second-class citizenship.  Being  black continues to be a social liability that many of us are forced to carry on our skin, and when we are not as successful as the white guy down the hall, we become the target of accusations that we aren’t smart enough, creative enough or otherwise worthy of the rewards that are granted to others.

Making this complex phenomenon even more interesting is the fact that many African Americans are fooled into buying into our own inferiority.   From an early age, we are taught to accept the falsehood of an American meritocracy, which then leaves us banging our heads against the wall when we find that our outcomes are not in alignment with our efforts.  So, when the well-intended folks in charge tell us that our test scores/performance evaluations/qualifications are not quite up to snuff, we end up concluding that it’s because we simply aren’t good enough.  I recall my mother being told when I was in school that I wasn’t smart enough to go to college or keep up with the other kids; it continues into adulthood when the companies/institutions we work for are more critical of our abilities than they are of their own racially-exclusive hiring and promotion records.

Whether any given African American is qualified to receive a particular opportunity is a debatable factor that varies widely within the societal cross-section.  But one fact that is undeniable is that most of the economic infrastructure in America was built on a highly-racist and asymmetric foundation.  So, when the company, law school, etc is revealed to have only had one or two African American hires in the last 50 years of existence, only a racist will conclude that this outcome occurred because no black person on the planet was qualified to receive that particular job or promotion.  Even the Harvard Law School has only granted tenure to two African American women in the last 194 years of existence – black female attorneys should not be blamed for a hiring record that would make David Duke proud.

The bottom line is that men like Arrington must be confronted at every available opportunity, because most of us work with a version of Michael Arrington within our own organizations.  The goal is not to attack them or make them feel bad; but rather, we should push them out of the comfortable bubbles created by an unacknowledged economic aristocracy.  If Arrington truly wishes to create the great Silicon Valley meritocracy that he loves to brag about, he’s going to have to open the door for everyone to compete and stop making excuses for dismal outcomes.  Blaming Soledad O’Brien for pointing out the obvious is clearly a losing strategy.

Having spent some time in corporate America it became evident early on that meritocracy was not always a key factor in hiring.  Before the civil rights acts of the 60′s I was told that I was unqualified for promotion because of my race, even though I had trained others, white boys, to become my manager.  The corporate executive was so bold that he put it in writing.  It was never that we didn’t have the skills-we just didn’t, and still don’t, have the level playing field.  I finally got the promotion, but hit the glass ceiling fast.

    • Lena Gilliam Robinson

That is why it is good to take your skills and start your own business in your field of expertise.  You don’t have to have a mega company, but seek contracts of your own…my husband and I did.  We work hard and we are successful.  Besides you are a “Gilliam” like me :) .  Just do it!

        Excellent advice Lena!

People of color have to look after their own interests, and create revenue streams outside of simply working a 9 to 5 for others.

Utilizing the internet, anything is possible.

We have all got to”Just do it!”.

Why is this asshole Arrington tripping so hard? Yes, it’s a known fact there aren’t many African Americans succeeding in Silicon Valley for a variety of reasons. Suddenly, some people criticize his remark and he goes on the typical white person’s rant “I’m a raaaaacist guys!” and so forth. Then, Arrington receives comfort from his fellow white members of the white race who can sympathize with being called a racist or whatever. Sighs. I know the response backwards and forwards. Personally, I didn’t see anything racist that he said. It was his opinion and reflection on diversity within Silicon Valley. But like all of the media, Arrington goes apeshit into the same tired ass rant just because some folks had an issue with his response. According to Arrington, one must have a big brain to succeed in the tech industry. So, I guess that means they must be exceptionally smart. Too bad Arrington is so fucking dumb, whiny, and ignorant not to realize the game of racial divide the mainstream white media LOOOOOVES to play whenever there is an issue surrounding black people. But hey, that’s white privilege for ya – remaining blissfully blind to the obvious bullshit.

    • merwordup

I actually read O’Brien’s article with his comments and there is nothing racist about it. Just truth. But I thank you for pointing out a growing trend of white males pulling the ” People think I am racist card” and then kind of seek confirmation from others that it is a growing plight for white males.

  • Francoisedubois48

I thank white men like Arrington for slipping up and making us aware of his true feelings. Those feelings are often shared by other powerful white men. It’s always a good thing to be able to identify your enemy “white supremacy”. It keeps you from being lul into false sense of comfort. White men like him need to be thanking black folks for all are many contributions to this country and the world instead they attempt to humiliate. That is ignorance at its best.

Why should this suprise anyone they don’t repect the community because we don’t repect ourselves. Wake up community and stop giving them everything, value ourselves and the things God has given us. We are greater together than apart.

This has been bothering me for a long time: How is Soledad O’Brien the spokesperson on black issues?  I do not see a black counterpart on Latino issues on network televison or anywhere else.  And what’s more:  Why has she been embracedby the black community
as an expert on African American issues.  The few times I watched her briefly, she was
clearly uncomfortable playing the role as Oracle of Black People Issues.  I am befuddled.

    • alittledabadoyou

The “one drop rule”.  While it is debated by those who “suffer” from it, that they are not quite black.  However in matters of expertise on all things black, “one drop” will do.

exactly, the oppression clearly gets worse the darker you get. I’m a Mexican-Jew which means i look Arabic and i know for fact i wouldnt have had a chance if i was any darker cause as lighter as I am than someone like Dr. Boyce, I still only had one chance. I worked hard and made it into a managment position(by pure luck, hard work has nothing to do with, see all managers and how generally incompetent they are) and started questioning the inherent racism at EyeMasters (the corp i worked for) after that many tactics from rumours,  sendin me different product from what i ordered to even creating a specialized position(regional technical manager, aka were takin your office and power of influence away and demoting you from regional manager to regional mechanic and much so on.. ) for me were implemented to push me out. Sadly i took the bait and left(myself without resources) and havent been able to get a job that was near the same since. Now i’m a manual laborer (still, another position not many Black people can get cause many Mexicans somehow believe they are white and refuse to accept reality though many i worked with are just as dark as Dr. Boyce) and we all know how bad the contracting business is.  Even when I worked for a Dominoes in a Black majority community there was not one Black person who was hired. The only person in my family who has a semi-descent job is my father who is a White Jew with no HS education and a criminal background. My brother has an “ok” job at applebees but just simply due to the fact that the owner of the franchise he works for is Arabic and believes my brother is the same. btw how many people know that a $250 pair of glasses only cost a company $5 including labor?

well she is half black! stop complaining. be happy she is not ignoring her black side and defends it. there are alot of bi racial people that hate to admit they are half black! “N!ggas” stay complaining

    • Jon Beer

Why did CNN hire and pay Soledad O’Brien to crown herself the official Black spokesperson? Because they didn’t want an actual educated Black person on the air telling the truth.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

    Soledad O’Brien isn’t even BLACK!
I saw a bio about her and she invented herself as a “Black” journalist back in college because she saw an “opportunity.” An opportunity to cash in on something she’s not.
Her father is a white guy from Austraila. Her mom is Cuban.
Where in any of that is African American? Nowhere.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GXGHYQH4DYO5OPV3GBWYYAZ3QM Pharaoh

Soledad’s mother is AFRO-cuban, you dumbazz!

That means she has African blood, and that means she is Black in all the Latin American countries, and here in the United States.

Soledad has always identified herself as an African American, and she has worked had to look out for the great needs of her people.

Only an ignorant fool would even bring up her heritage as some sort of insult, when her mission and message are right on point!

Do the world a favor, and educate yourself before commenting and judging others.

Soledad has always identified herself as an African American?
Soledad O’Brien IS NOT AN AFRICAN AMERICAN.
Her mother is CUBAN, as in Latino. Her family DID NOT emigrate to Cuba from sub-Saharan Africa. There are CUBANS who are 100% Cuban.

Soledad O’Brien’s “mission” is getting PAID by CNN. She can’t replace Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper or anyone else, so SHE does this “Black” song and dance to stay employed.

Do the world a favor, leave it.

I read Soledad’s Bio, listened to her interview about HOW SHE GOT INTO THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA BY COVERING BLACK STORIES.

What’s next? Jackie Chan is Black because he’s Afro-Chinese?
        Shut up, fool.

        • F3ral Anarchy

whats an african american?  an american of african descent.  Science has proven that all humans stem from africa.  soooo technically she has an african heritage simply because EVERYONE ON THE PLANET DOES. cubans are nothing but black folks who speak spanish.

          • Jon Beer

            What is an african american?
You never have to ask a White police officer that question, do you? Soledad isn’t Black. Even Jesse Jackson figured that out.

dummy cubans are not just white! latino is an ethnicity not a race stupid!

          • Jon Beer

Read the above statement. Fewer than 11% of Cubans are Afro Cuban.  The majority of Cubans come from Spain and other parts of Europe. Looks like you’re the dummy McGrady.

            I do.
            Cuba.
Have you ever been or studied its history?
Cuba is a remnant of the Spanish Empire. Majority of Cubans are Spanish.

          • Xyz

um, when did Spanish become a race?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Wright/1193604785 Eric Wright

@None of Your B.  You are as idiotic as it gets.  The transatlantic slave trade brought Africans to all parts of the Americas including  (and especially) the Carribean.  So please stop making assertions based on your convuluted, no historical world view.  There are African derived Cubans, Dominicans, Panamanians, Costa Ricans, Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans, Bahamians, Brazillians, Barbadians, etc…And yes Americans.  These are the irrefutable facts, and where you get the confidence to post such stupidity is beyond understanding.  The only fool here is you!!!

          • Jon Beer

Fewer than 11% of Cubans are Afro Cuban. 90% of Cubans are SPANISH, and another 8% of them are White Europeans.  You’re wrong. Soledad isn’t Black. White Dad from Austraila, Cuban mom from Spain.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

Soledad O’Brien has a White father and a CUBAN mother. She’s not black. It’s okay when illegal Latinos, LaRaza and CHC to “complain” but Black folks are just supposed to sit in the back of the bus quietly?
Shut up fool. You sound as dumb as Boyce Watkins looks.

    • Anonymous

dummy her mother is afro cuban. her parents at one time werent allowed to marry because it was against the law for interracial couples to do so. try again! my dads side is from cuba but that does not mean they are not black. education is a  SOB! try it

      • Jon Beer

“The ancestry of White Cubans comes primarily from Spaniards. During the
18th, 19th and early part of the 20th century especially, large waves of
Canary Islanders, Galicians, Asturians, and Catalans
emigrated from Spain to Cuba. Other European nationalities which
immigrated include: English, Scots, Russians, Poles, Portuguese,
Romanians, Italians, Greeks, French, Germans and Irish.”

Less than 11% of Cubans are so-called Afro Cubans.  This means there’s a 90% chance that Soledad O’Brien’s mother has any Black in her.

None of Your B is right about Soledad O’Brien.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

          My point exactly.
Cubans are mainly SPANISH, with a fraction of Cubans being mixed with African. Soledad O’Brien isn’t Black, not even close.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_54QQUJWJI2AVO43NPVM3L74M4Q Cheryl J

Soledad identifies her mother as Afro-Cuban.   I think she would know better than you.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_54QQUJWJI2AVO43NPVM3L74M4Q Cheryl J

Actually her mother is an Afro-Cuban, meaning she is part Black (African) and Cuban.

I am so happy and proud of all of you young brothers and sisters (I’m black and age 73) for your lashing out at Soledad O’Brien being assigned by CNN to do the work of some REAL black person, that I am jumping and shouting.  So I don’t have to take on this issue myself now.  For I am 100 percent in accord with everyone that is opposed to her being the one doing all of the black issues that CNN comes up with. And let me also say that I certainly hope that SOME KIND OF WAY, Brother Boyce will see to it that CNN gets a good look at these comments on this matter.  And tell them that they need to assign a REAL black journalist to cover black issues, rather than one that happily aligns herself with several races. And away from this subject for a moment, to make a point about myself as a preacher, I preach black liberation theology, and believe in and promote a black Jesus and a black God. And have gotten on CNN every time they put on programs that falsely portray Jesus as white, which is nothing but an absolute lie. So keep pouring it on my brothers and sisters. — Rev. George Brooks
