Tom Joyner Says to Support Obama Just Because He’s Black

tom joyner says we should support President Obama because he's blackIn this video, Dr. Boyce Watkins and YBW Political Contributor Yvette Carnell discuss Tom Joyner’s recent comments about President Barack Obama.  In his column, Joyner said that “Let’s not even deal with facts right now. Let’s deal with our blackness and pride — and loyalty. We have a chance to reelect the first African American president … And I’m not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he’s a black man.”

Every since we got the right to vote we only had a choice between Satan & the Devil. Now today we have a choice between Satan & Belzebub. or Satan & Iblis. What’s  the difference? so we might as well go Black!

    • Wallaceharris62

      you are fool, fool

    • Larry

i thought satan and the devil was the same person/spirit…what is the difference?  lost me on we might as well go black, are you talking about voting for obama who is the black devil?

  • Rodd125

I think keeping President Obama in office will in encourage African Americans, and people of color, to stay interested in politics whereas many of us were not not before.

  • Cresenda

doesn’t matter…  we can vote for  obama or have republicans in office….   please vote and make sure all your friends/family are registered and get to the polls…. or blacks, whites, and purple folks will all be beyond screwed….

  • Nate

If President Obama was Chinese, we African Americans should still vote for him, if we are voting in our own interest.  The GOP simply has no candidate that would govern in the interest of any group Black, White, Brown or the working class. Do we have another viable, choice? We don’t !

  • Anonymous

so we should make ignorant choices now. Thanx, Tom!

    • L Colvin

What is so ignorant about Bllack people supporting Mr.Obama. Mr.Joyner is making a very logical appeal  to Blacks and whites not run from an African American who just so happens to be a very appealing politician on the issues and personally. We have to stop running from our leaders fearing that white folks do not approve.

      • Anonymous

You are correct. I should have stated ‘blind’, not ‘ignorant’. A candidate ought to chosen on the issues and that gives Obama the edge over the pack of (R)epugnant wolves. Skin color should never be a reason to vote against a candidate. black people have historically voted the issues. that is the biggest reason for his victory in the primary season and his election. I still disagree with Joyner on other aspects of his position and I must agree with the point you just made.

Mr. Joyner is making a very valid appeal. This “are you supporting Obama beause he is Black?” question has been spewed out since he launched his campaign . What is wrong with supporting an intelligent, attractive and charismatic politician who is Arican American.  You never hear Black people questioning any white voter for supporting any white politician for office?  African Americans vote for Him out of racial pride and his stand on ths issues.  Is there anything wrong with that?  Whites have sought to shame Black people about supporting their leaders from day one; always casting doubt about their abilities and seeking to weaken our ability to aacept ourselves and the People who lead us.  IT was done when Dr. King was alive and they are trying to do it now, of course with the help of some of our own People. Lets not let it happen again. Bravo Mr. Joyner keep up the Good work my brother.

    • Redcarpetpro

Bravo Leonardcolvin. This is so true. Having been around to see 12 Presidents (11 of whom were white), I did not hear white people or white media and leaders tell white people not to to vote for any of them just because they were white, but I do remember white people telling black people that we shouldn’t be supporting any of our leaders like Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and any other black leader who questioned the status quo. Now my black brothers are leading the pack to discredit the first black president who everyone alive never thought they would live to witness. As one of my friends said during Obama’s campaign, white people are not going to allow him to be a hero. Just as history has always shown, when blacks excel at anything that white people claim as theirs they go into a huddle to destroy them. Anyone remember Jack Johnson and how white America reacted to him winning the heavy weight championship. All blacks should watch Ken Burn’s “Unforgivable Blackness” and how white America responded to that win. Just as the Los Angeles Times front page article published after the fight in 1908 stated (and I paraphrase ) “Negros don’t go feeling proud and thinking things are going to change just because this black man won the championship”. Well things have not changed over 100 years later.

      • Larry

I supported Obama in 2008, and I will either support him this time around, or just stay at home and not vote at all. And I’m a bit reluctant this time, because Obama, himself, has not supported us BLACK FOLKS that well.  He’s too timid, and not bold enough to align himself with blacks, no matter the true need, in any instance or situation. So I have been calling on him to appoint more STRONG-VOICED black as advisers to him, rather than all of these far-too-many Jews and whites that he is surrounded by, and listening to. And I have been calling on him to dig up that birth certificate again, because rather than the reason for not doing so being where he was born, I have long believed that the certificate just may not list him as BLACK. And if not, what would black folks have to say about that?  In fact, does he, himself, ever say, directly and specifically, that he is black or an African American?  Or is it always someone else doing the description of him, for him? Again, he has far too many Jews “covering him up,” so to speak, with only one or two half-black looking blacks (timid like himself), sitting quietly somewhere in the back. But he’s still the best qualified of everyone else that plans to run. — Rev. George Brooks

  • Fa

You’re totally on point, Rev. George! I just want to say that President Obama called himself a black man when he was on David Letterman’s show. I feel the same way: Obama should become a bit bolder and not be so timid when confronting those who mean him harm. A lion shows its teeth and roars to show its strength.

    • MzB

      I
don’t purport to know the Pres., but he strikes me as someone who does
not choose to demonstrate typical methods of assertiveness that people may
feel more comfortable with and that’s his right.  I am more impressed
with people that get it done…to heck with posturing.  He should be
allowed to be his own person and not have to sling hash to be
respected.  I agree with you, FA, that if we don’t bind together as a
race of people AND make demands, we will continue to be marginalized and
ignored.  Quite honestly, this is an inside job — we keep asking and
begging people to treat us fairly instead of knowing that we are
valuable and demanding respect.  We have the smarts and ability and
resources to be self-sustaining, however, we don’t stick together.  This
system won’t change until WE CHANGE!  People bought into the hype in
2008 and it was not just black people, however, in 2012, I don’t
see that same type of enthusiasm brewing hence voter turnout will be lower!  Motivation to vote is
not so compelling when one is choosing between the lesser of the
      evils.

At post-election, I saw policies that “a rising tide raise all ships”.  I
saw the bankers not march to get their bailout!  Don’t Ask/Don’ Tell
got up in his face and as a result received legislation that favored
their cause!  Immigration policies were changed, etc.  However, when a
dialogue to discuss the issues of high unemployment in our communities, unfair lending practices in our community, health issues in our community, THEN
we hear — I’m the president of We The People — not just black
people.  How does one reconcile that?

Since when did we allow Tom Joyner/Steve Harvey to become leaders of the masses of our people? Anyone who disagrees with them, these comedian/radio personalities simply defame and disrespect them. We have our own versions of Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh, I guess.

Politics is a game of give/give back. We voted for Pres. Obama to the tune of 90+%, greater than any other group ever did. Now, almost 4 years later, are we as a people benefitting from this fact? Let each of us search ourselves and our pockets and ask that question.

I would like to have seen Pres. Obama do more to address our needs and help us more directly. I know that he’s the President of every American, but this portion of America, Black America, is in serious trouble.

Maybe it’s time we dust off our walking/chanting/marching shoes, threaten with our possibility of riots/civil disobedience and wake him and the rest of this country up to the fact that the poorest people are simply being ignored. Since Pres. Obama told us to take off our slippers and stop crying, then we should put on our marching bots, march right on up to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (White House address), and DEMAND that our needs be addresses NOW.

Unless we do something rash soon, we’ll be made obsolete by our inactivity and inability to stir up real and lasing change for poor people in this country and even all over the world. We have, or at least had, the ability to force the President’s hand before. Maybe it’s time to do it again.

Time to make Pres. Obama see himself for what he really is: a black man in America. No more, no less. Just because he has a title, he can’t look his little daughters in the eye, nor his wife, and say that he can’t address the centuries old quest for justice that black people in America have faced ever since we came to these shores.

THIS is why we voted for him, for ourselves, for our ancestors, for our children: for true and lasting justice to finally come. We aren’t a lazy, trifling race of idiots who have no right asking for it, no.

We built this country for free, we suffered through rape, murder, injustice, stolen property, disrespect, racism, sexism, and degradation that lasts to this very day. THIS is why we voted for this man. If he can’t address it, then we must MAKE him do it. He should never be timid, weak or unable to address justice, not when our ancestors paid so dear a price as they and we are paying.

    Unless he’s just “playing” black…

well tom joyner, although i do think the reasoning is wrong, i can honestly say he does for his ppl….no one on the planet can say the same thing…he has been doing it since the late 60′s…..there will be a lot of ppl here disputing it but the truth of the matter is they are only ‘internet talkers’…..they wont get out in the streets and help blacks….not 1 bit….every one i have ever seen on computers who rip leaders like tom joyner, i have never seen them on tv speaking up for blacks, not at any marches, or anything….they talk tough on pc’s tho….

but for what it’s worth, i dont trust obama…matter of fact, i dont trust anyone in the government….now i do get out in the community and help my ppl….u may think i am lying, but i am not….i happen to be tom joyner’s producer in the houston market….and even tho i produce him, once again, i disagree with supporting obama just because he is black….

but tom does support the black cause….usually radio personalities will support the black cause, even moreso than pastors because pastors are uncle tom’s….they arely get out and support black causes….if it’s not coming into their churches with money in their hands, then they want no parts of it…

if anyone thinks i am lying about my status and my job, i work at majic 102.1. inh houston, tx…if u have a facebook page, type inside the search box, ‘dorail mrproducer crayton’…..and i will come up…..shoot me a friend request and i will accept and we can all become friends…..i am here to make friends, not argue and fight amongst each other. .  : )

      Well stated.

  • Sheritownsend100

I’ve always appreciated Tom Joyner’s contributions, but never thought he was bright. I wonder, would he be saying the same thing if the black president was Herman Cain or Clarence Thomas?

    • Wallaceharris62

whites vote for whites  mexicans vote for mexicans  just because they are the same race and nothing is said about it, so why is it such a big thing when a black man votes for another black man primerily because  he is black.

      • Denmark Vessey

to answer your question on why is it such a big thing when a black man votes for another black man…

for whites- it’s called a threat to the white establishment
for blacks – it’s called self hatred towards their own race

  • Francoisedubois48

Politics is not about a savior. The political system is bigger than Obama black people should not be ask to stop thinking in order to support president Obama. If you can say you are happy with what he has done for our community than support him, but if all you have is that he and his family are beautiful and attractive and he is intelligent that is not enough. This is not a beauty contest or a popularity contest. It’s about politics and are socioeconomic relevance as a community. This is bigger than one man.

  • Brominrahim365

I belive that King fought to give us a choice when at that time we had no choice. We had to drink from a particular fountain and sat on the back of the bus, etc. When it comes to voting you also have a choice . u can choose to vote or not to vote. If the politicians are a part of this system and r not trying to change it. (Black or White) they are not under God. Democracy is not of god it’s the rule of the Devil. Demo = Demon and Cracy = Rule of. Therefore it’s the rule of the devil. So for those who feel that they must vote then vote and if you r Black, why not keep a Black man in office. The others havedone no better for us.

  • http://www.youtube.com/openfist247 Openfist247

Do you believe that people will vote AGAINST the president because he’s black?  If so, why not vote for him because he’s black, just to counter the racists?  But naw, some of us haughty negros go “I won’t” do whatver “just because he’s black”, then will turn around and wonder why racists are still kicking us in the behind.

    • MzB

That’s something to think about!  I look at the prison industrial complex and see a whole lot of blacks in that system — just because they’re black.  When you compare the punishment levied by race, we definitely receive a lion’s share of the punishment!

    • Fred

well said…we are our worst enemy..

good ol boyce and yvette at it again…manipulating a situation for personal gain in the guise of love for black people.  boyce trying to build your black world for advertisement dollars to increase his bank account and yvette trying to make a name for herself in the media industry.   i noticed boyce, west and tavis toned down their criticism of obama when it threatened their back accounts.  in the video, boyce use yvette to do his dirty work and she is too stupid to see it in her ambition to make a name for herself.    in the video yvette admits she is not a supporter of obama, and we already know boyce feelings towards joyner to protect his side piece-cornel west. joyner said we should do it because he is a black man.  he did not say do it ONLY because he is black, or JUST (as stated in the title to manipulate).  therefore we should not be ashamed to use race as the primary factor and secondary issues like employment next in selecting our leaders.    joyner is not saying ONLY race…if we vote  because of race ONLY, then half of the black people would be in support of uncle hermain cain.  subconciously we identify with our own race to feel comfortable in a white controlled environment, when we walk into a place, we want to see peole that look like us.    don’t allow negroes like boyce and yvette to manipulate us…there is nothing wrong with race being the dominant factor in making a decision.  white people have been doing it for centuries and they apologize to no one.

    • Wallaceharris62

Nat Turner, you took the words right out of my mouth, we always use the words black people, ( trying to speak for all black people ) when most of us are really only looking out for our selfs, like Dr. Wakins and yvette mabe if they try to standby our President he would’nt have to look for help from the other side.If he addressed only blacks he would have no help at all. Mr. Obama is doing the best he can with what little help he gets from us.

  • Perkinsh309

    I agree

  • Anonymous

He will not win without the same kind of white turnout he had the first time.  Even at 90+% black voters casting for Obama it took MORE white votes to get him elected.  If we ignore this we cut our own throats and our first black presidents as well.  We make this a black-only issue at our own peril.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBJCWPQD5NRVCOAGLGLDFHEQAA WhoCares

I’ve followed Tom for many, many Chicago years and am so done! In my opinion, he believes us to be too stupid to think for ourselves. When he speaks, he doesn’t offer logical or intelligent dialogue in order for us to form wise decisions. He makes statements like the one we’re discussing! I don’t know if he just has bad vocabulary or he feels that because he’s speaking to us he doesn’t have to use the good.
No, there isn’t enough of US to vote Obama back in-there never was! Have you looked around? Our women and men are incarcerated. Another President’s drug law has yet to be overturned by our present POUS. A fraction of what we need done. I don’t think Obama cares, he didn’t in Chicago (while he lived blocks from one of the most impoverished/drug/crime/murder areas.) Even the area where his home is drove out underpriveledged AA including the elderly because they nearly tripled the cost of realestate. He does not care-never did!!! He’s a politician. He’s addressing us now because it’s time to vote.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bernie-Cmix/100002667798643 Bernie Cmix

It’s not like we have a lot of choices…we’ve got Obama, the  Republicans and the tea party.  One of them is going to win.  Obama hasn’t been and can’t be everything to everyone but who has.  If you think Obama is bad vote republican or tea party…good luck.  He is the best of the worst!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EGXZ26MK42CPGJ2FMIR3VXS4T4 flextime

Is this surprising to anybody?  This is the reason why Obama got elected in the first place.

Now lets transfer this same thought pattern to Black Men.  Black Men should marry Black women because they are Black.  Now we might be touching on something since here on the West Coast rarely do I see a fine Black Man with a Black woman.  Let’s try and save the Black race by not impregranting the first thing that opens their legs.  Only be with a Black women should be the thing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_W4URVX2AFXHIKJ2ZF7PVKDRJOY Meangrl

I agree. That is one of many reasons why I will vote for him again.

  • MenkhtQem

I would say this… the game is multi-layered, and there are short-term and long-term games all going on at the same time.  As the demographics change in this country, the brain-trusts of the conservative movement are moving pieces and people around in order to stave off people of color and progressives into the economic and political power structure, to hold onto this power for as long as possible…. which could be for another generation.  That mid-term game requires the short-term game of de-funding all the ways in which the working class has entered the middle class.  Immediately.

Like it or not, race continues to be manipulatable factor that the right has never stopped using.  And it always involves scaring unempowered white folks to cast their lot with those in power, for fear that the “other people” will gain access to power through education, politics and revenue.

Has Obama shown as much political courageous as many would have liked? Probably not. Nor do we know that courage would have worked.  But what about the long-term game?  A President seats judges, and has a multitude of low visibility opportunities to make moves that help to even the playing field.  If his rhetoric implied that he understood the need to level the playing field and create more equality before he got into office, I would imagine that awareness hasn’t dwindled, but has probably increased 1000-fold.  WHAT PRESIDENT HAS EVER BEEN ASKED TO SUBMIT HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE ONCE IN OFFICE?

I’m not saying people should vote for Obama because he is black.  I’m saying that given the entire playing field, people have to vote for the person who’s life experiences, stated core values, perspectives and policies most resemble the kind of reality they want to live in.  And if that doesn’t work, figure out which side seems to promote policies that could hurt you — and then vote for the other guy!  As simplistic as that seems, that’s what the other side is promoting.  So I can’t fault Tom Joyner for being willing to boil the message down.

  • CJRox

    Tom,
Should we support Clearence Thomas just because he’s Black. JFK, LBJ,Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have done more for Black Folks than Obama. From a financial standpoint we Blacks are worse off since Obama was elected. However, I will vote for him simply because I can’t stand the GOP or it’s candidates.

What an ignorant racist. Lets put the fate of our country into a mans hands because his skin looks dark. Are you really serious? You do realize with a white population about six times the size of blacks it must of took some support (probably more than blacks) to get him into office. And then when he got into office everyone is like when is he going to help us blacks. No one realizes he is the President of America. People as a whole. To help one is to hurt others. Help everyone as individuals not as select groups. This article just promotes division. Sad you still wish separation.

  • Anonymous

I will admit, that I have said this too on many occasions, but it was never “just because” he’s black, but because he is laying a foundation of self-esteem for other young black men to step up on and be know for our intellectual prowess, not just how high we can jump, leap for a hoop, throw a ball. Almost every time you see a young black “male” kid, the he has a rubber sphere in his hands hoping he can make it as an athlete, or entertainer (athlete, rapper-singer, dancer, comedian, or sex stud. Our Black women (i.e Oprah) become filthy rich and are put before or men in this society because they are less “threatening” and more articulate (sound white) to white society.

We Black men are only good for entertainment or protecting the idols of this society. We can only get work in a white collar world sometimes if we prostitute ourselves to the female gate-keeper put “in-charge” over us and become no threat because we “gay it up a bit” and drop our dignity as men. And see how people respond to a Black man of REAL power? EVERYTHING is “his” fault (on the white end) and he is not doing “enough” for the black people.(on the black end). Not white enough, not black enough. Not liberal enough, not conservative enough. Naive on foreign policy, yet he got virtually ALL the 9/11 monsters. Gives a “good speech” but no “substance”. All his predecessors are “President.whoever”, but he’s just plan old “Barack” or “O’Bama”Now as an intelligent black man (graduating both HS and college with Highest “academic” Honors), no athlete, and almost the same age as President O’Bama; I don’t know how many times I have suffered ALL of this crap I listed being said of me by my peers every since childhood. I would have given anything to have a black intelligent President to look up to and aspire to be. My best childhood friend always said “he” would be the “first” Black President. I even learned in fourth grade all the Presidents from 1 thru the then current one in order with years of office, but they were ALL White and “none” looked like me. You only know how important that is when you live through it. My friend ALWAYS had low self-esteem but was also a scholarly kid.

White’s can afford to differ to the “idealism” of “we are all the same”–what does it matter what his colour is…your a racist…ALL deceptive lies. That is NOT the America Black-American young men “experience” DAILY. Black women are advanced “before” us (humiliating for manhood world-wide) and we are left behind with people coming up to us (me a 6’4″ man) asking me about a sport event when I could care less and don’t even know what they are talking about. I’m an intellectual not an athlete. But, tall black male ONLY means “entertainment” or a “speech of the emotional pulse” for the “real important” people.
If the President was say: A Herman Cain (House…n****r, I would agree that we should NOT vote for him because he is Black. But an intelligent Black man who genuinely cares about the welfare of America? (stupid as they are to keep giving him a white back-lash anti-black blue-dog democrat and republican congress to vote against EVERY effort he makes and then complaining that “he is doing nothing” and “disapproving” of him). Shame, on black people (especially black women) for openly putting him down. Just like they do our dads in the home. Sure, I saw his faults even BEFORE he was elected the first time during the 2008 campaign. It is the same faults he “still” has. HOWEVER, he is an intelligent Black man who is in there swinging despite the “racial-realities” of what he is up against. We Blacks AND Whites who know the reality of the society and what he means as an inspiration to young Black and Hispanic men should, YES, support him “Because he is Black” and a Black “MALE” at that as we are the group MOST demonized (even by our own mothers) AND fall into the self-fulfilling prophecy of how we are perceived to be. President Obama means alot to us as a symbol and example to live up to. I love him, and will vote for him again. Look at the characters who he is running neck and neck with in the polls after ALL he has done and aspired to do.
If he were “white” or even a black woman he would get more praise. This is the SAME country that elected George Bush…TWICE and the party into office that got us in the economic mess we’re in and they go RIGHT BACK to the PIG troft for more helpings LOL…just to avoid an “uppity n****r” but really intelligent Black Man” who isn’t cleaning up their ”mess” after them “fast enough”, but waiting to “steal” credit for his accomplishments. Stupid America. And for ANY Black person to “assist” them in their task of doing so is a party to it….just as historically it has been so. He knew he could not clean up the problems in 4 years, the problem was too vast and now, world-wide. So, being the astute politician he is (the only way to ever get elected), He simply played politics the first 3 years from the middle. I think in his last term (if we give him a REAL co-operative democratic congress to match his ideals, he has the wisdom to put policy in place that will get us back on tract. But a country, who won’t even support something a BASIC as health-care for ALL (even MORE priority than a job believe it or not because dead folks make NO MONEY EVER…LOL)Whites (especially republicans) support their man even when he is an idiot, or a Sarah Palin or a Newt Grinch, or a Rick Perry…OOPS…or the white america conscious clearing Herman Cain or hell, even the Elephant himself. We Black Americans and White Democrates had better get with the “loyalty program” (for now we can be more demanding latter) and forgo the “idealistic masses” program that make the old reliable “divide and conquer” effective against us until REAL equality for All America is “achieved” not just “merely declared” by those who never feel the problem that has NEVER LEFT.
