Mika Edmondson: Why Do Black Churches Follow Bad Pastors?

Mika Edmondson

Don’t get me wrong. I love good pastors and there are many out there. We should do more to support and honor them. (see1 Timothy 5:17) But you know the scenario. A local pastor is caught in some scandalous behavior (stealing money, committing adultery, or worse), the word spreads, a few fed-up members (including the whistleblower/s) leave, the “incident” is downplayed or swept under the rug, and eventually the congregation moves on as if nothing ever happened. Let’s face it. Black churches are notorious for their unwillingness to shake bad leaders. Even in the face of undeniable evidence of gross sin, some congregations maintain their commitments to shady characters with an almost addictive-like quality. As a tradition, they might be our “favorite mistake.”

Harvard Public Leadership Professor Barbara Kellerman suggests that individuals generally follow bad leaders because they often satisfy basic human needs like safety, simplicity, and certainty. Groups tend to keep them because they provide benefits like cohesion, identity, order, and collective work. When this tendency spills over into the local church, it spells disaster for its mission, its people, and its leadership. Here are three common reasons why church folks tend to avoid disciplining corrupt pastors.

  1. 1. The “Guarded Wolf” phenomenon: Some churchgoers believe pastors (even bad ones) are virtually untouchable. Because of their position and function within the local church, they are seen as being above any charge of indiscretion. People who hold this view will even guard a corrupt pastor (a “guarded wolf”) by immediately denying and dismissing any allegation of misconduct before careful consideration. People who guard wolves often blame innocent victims (the Lord’s sheep) for their own victimization. For instance, many women find themselves blamed by their own brothers and sisters in Christ for having been sexually harassed (or worse) by a corrupt pastor. Should they find the courage to speak out, they are often branded as “trouble makers” and/or demonized as a part of the devil’s scheme to bring down the ministry. It’s not uncommon to hear wolf guarders say things like “you know how some women are. They always throw themselves at pastors.” Or “When I hear things about our pastor I simply ignore it because they are always under spiritual attack by the enemy.”

Without a doubt, pastors often find themselves the subject of spiritual attacks. However bad pastors are themselves a kind of predator that the Lord’s people need protecting against. This is why the Bible repeatedly warns us about them (see Matthew 7:15, Acts 20:28-31, Jude 3-16). Can you imagine the carnage that would ensue if a group of sheep huddled around a wolf to protect it from being discovered and caught? Wolf guarding doesn’t help congregations or honor Christ.

  1. 2. The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” behavior policy: Some people adopt a “don’t ask don’t tell” behavior policy with their pastor because they feel their pastor’s personal conduct is more or less none of the church’s business. As long as he/she shows up on Sunday and performs all the public duties of a pastor, their private life should be virtually off limits. Usually, this attitude really masks a more sinister motive. Many people figure “If I don’t ask the pastor about his sin, he won’t tell me to stop committing mine.” Other people gravitate to corrupt pastors because they already mirror some personal sin. Bad leaders are often supported by bad followers who feel more comfortable and justified around them. For instance, adulterers may feel especially comfortable supporting an adulterous pastor because there is little danger of their “pet sin” being preached against in the church.

Some people tolerate pastoral misconduct because it gives them political leverage over a compromised pastor or secures their position within the church. They keep pastoral indiscretions a secret in exchange for certain favors from their leader or out of fear that if he should lose his power, so would they.

  1. 3. The Pastor as “Mini-monarch”: Many congregations (particularly autonomous ones like the Baptist) are not set up for genuine pastoral accountability. In some settings, the pastor is basically a solitary autocrat, with no real checks on his decisions or behavior. This makes it very difficult for a congregation to properly deal with pastoral abuses. Some pastors even promote this way of thinking, sometimes suggesting that they are not accountable to anybody but God. Others will systematically dismantle even legitimate restrictions on their power. In these situations, it’s not uncommon to hear people say “if a pastor sins you should just pray about it and move on.” This is often an admission that a congregation has left itself vulnerable to abuse by its leadership. There isn’t anyone within the congregation itself truly equipped or authorized to confront pastoral misconduct. Some pastors in these settings may demonstrate enough maturity to do the right thing should they “get caught up,” however these congregations are not structurally equipped to protect themselves against a corrupt pastor who won’t. Sometimes deacon boards or boards of directors serve as a kind of power balance. However, few deacons or lay-members are properly equipped to correct a wayward pastor.

For the record, the Bible does offer human protections for congregations in the form of multiple pastors for each local body. Among its many benefits, this model protects congregations from the excesses of one personality by balancing it out with a group. It also promotes real pastoral accountability from a group of people who know the day-to-day ins and outs of that particular congregation and who are qualified to recognize and call out pastoral misconduct. I know this is a HUGE paradigm shift those of us in the Black church tradition and space doesn’t allow me to fully explain it here. But before you prejudge it, check out these biblical references to see if they support a single or a multiple pastor model for local churches. (see Acts 11:30, 14:23, 20:17, Philippians 1:1, Titus 1:5, 1 Timothy 5:17,  James 5:14)

So What Does The Bible Say We Should Do About Bad Pastors?

Make no mistake about it. The Bible never calls Christians to remain loyal to corrupt leaders. In fact, the Bible clearly forbids churches from clinging to such pastors. 1 Timothy 5:20 says “As for those [pastors] who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.” There are precious few congregations willing to obey this biblical command. Can you imagine a local Black church publically reprimanding a corrupt pastor by bringing him before the congregation, calling out his sin, and “sitting him down?” Probably not. However in many cases, this is exactly what God’s word calls us to do. For you haters out there, our passage is not endorsing a “witch hunt”. (There are some bitter people who would like nothing more than to see a pastor fall.) Biblically speaking, churches may not act on accusations against its leaders except on the testimony of multiple witnesses (see 1 Timothy 5:19). Neither can churches afford simply to look the other way.

Scripture recognizes our sinful tendency to let bad leaders off the hook. Therefore, 1 Timothy 5:21 insists that even pastors should receive no special favors or leniency when it comes to sin.  It says “In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, doing nothing from partiality.”Even pastors aren’t above God’s law– Churches dishonor the Lord himself by acting as if they are. In the case of suspected gross pastoral sin, the Bible insists on 1.an unbiased investigation and evaluation of the facts and 2. public rebuke (a serious reprimand which may include removal from office or even disfellowship) if they are found to be guilty. I know this sounds unreasonably harsh to some. But apparently the Lord takes pastoral integrity very seriously (see1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9). So should we. Pastors have a unique potential both to promote spiritual benefit and harm among God’s people. How much physical, psychological, and spiritual devastation might have been avoided had local congregations simply obeyed the Bible’s clear direction in this area?

We all fall for bad preachers regardless of race. Don’t you hear many Catholic priests are now in prisons for abusing alter boys.  In fact  through ages until 1994 you could never suspect or talk ill of a Catholic priests. Nobody would believe you anyway. We thought they were all next to God. Now I see them as  regular people with Catholic biblical education.

    • Anonymous

I agree that people of all races will support morally bankrupt religious leaders.  However, the difference between the experience in the Catholic church and the experience in most black churches is who looks the other way.  In the Catholic church, the problem has been that church leadership has looked the other way on the abuse issues, whereas in the black church, the parishoners themselves are the ones who turn the blind eye to the pastor’s transgressions.

In the Catholic church, church officials went to great lengths to hide the allegations of abuse from their parishoners, which is why so many “troublesome” priests were simply reassigned to a different parish with a new set of unsuspecting churchgoers.  In contrast, within the black church, it may be an open secret amongst the parishoners that their pastor is a womanizer (or some other unsavory character), but church members themselves fight tooth and nail to protect the pastors secrets and keep him from being exposed or publicly held accountable.

Well Written & Well Put… Thank You For Sharing Truth!  God’s Son:
“But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked man from among you.” I Corinthians 5:9-13

I must admit to being fascinated that so many people who consider themselves devout believers in God and Jesus Christ also believe that super compensated Preachers have some special relationship with the ” Almighty ” and ignore their obvious devotion to money and their failure to behave in a ” Jesus Like Manner ” .What accounts for so many People believing that people like Benny Hinn could touch someone and restore their sight , or ability to ability to walk ? How was Jim Jones able to convince people to give all of their possessions , give unto him their Wives for sex, or feed their Children and themselves suicidal poisons ?Is there a difference between a cult and some Churches ?Is there something about the Black Community that makes us more susceptible to the ” God Wants You To Be Wealthy Stories ” told by ” Pimp Like ” Orators like Long, Frederick K. Price ( tells his audience that he and his Wife drive a different color Rolls for every day of the week ) , Creflo Dollar ( what a name has now promoted his Wife so they can make “mo money, mo money ,mo money ” ) , and others ? As for long he has talked his way into remaining at the head of this large congregation in spite of the apparent sexual abuse and immorality of taking advantage of young boys , his about face in fighting the allegations , his refusal to admit any wrong doing what so ever, and the payout of a reported 15 million dollar settlement that no doubt came from the funds of the Church. I have no doubt that he will be able to overcome this obvious investment fraud and continue to fool some of the people all of the time .

I am so happy that this article was written.  It lays bare the reasons we as black people seem all to happy to ignore the enormous moral failings of our moral leaders.  However, something tells me that the people who most need to read this article will never lay eyes on it.

Why Do Black Churches Follow Bad Pastors? I fine that it is not only black churches following what you consider bad Pastors.  There are Good and bad in all churches and Pastors no matter wheather they are followers of black or white.  This is a stereotype on our black churches.  I do not agree with this.

Because the adult people are crazy….

  • Kwame Somburu

I totally support the right of all humanity to believe whatever they desire, however, I totally oppose parents, and all humans forcing, coercing, intimidating, or in any way whatsoever outside of respectful discussion with adults over 18, to consider an adults views for adoption.  My parents were not religious in any way, but they never told their six children that we could not be religious.

I was 77 years old on October 13th, and have never been religious, or felt the need to be, or felt the need to believe in a god(s), astrology, spiritualism, or any non scientific belief system.  My self characterization is as a scientist: I look at everything from the viewpoint of science.  I encourage all of those who disagree with a scientific approach, not to seek medical help when ill, not to take your car to a mechanic, not to consult weather scientists for a prediction, not to us airplanes for travel (and everything else except horses, mules, and camels.)  In the early 20th century century, the overwhelming majority of humanity were against the concept of airplanes.  Many Christians in the US, said: “If god wanted us to fly, he would of given us wings.”

Also, African Americans that are not indoctrinated (which is extremely few, some freed their minds in later years) in the general belief systems of Europeans and Euro-Americans, who brought us here to enslave us, are not caught up in that mental drug called religion.  The Christian slave masters brought us here.  The Bible Belt, is where slavery, racism, lynching, burning us alive, and many other negatives, still exists in a less blatant form, and racism is alive and well down there.  There is not a single non scientific view  – past or present – that I would believe in: Islam, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, or any African religious/spiritual belief.  If any of them were valid re protecting us, none of us would have been enslaved, and would not presently be experiencing very negative treatment in the US, Africa, and throughout the world.  Religion has not helped poor whites in the United States of Criminal Insanity.

For those that desire, I can be viewed on the Wm. Buckley show in 1968, under my birth name of Paul Boutelle (1934 to 1979), when I and my running mate were using the presidential election to publicize our views.  I was a vice-presidential candidate, and participated in a total of nine election campaigns for varying offices.  I have never been a politician, the entire political system is a total farce.  My email address is kwamesomburu@gmail:disqus .com.  I am totally against all forms of oppression and discrimination that exists, and desire to see them eliminated.  There is only one side that I am on: the side of whomever is being oppressed, regardless of skin pigmentation, gender, or sexual preference.  Also, both of my names can be entered on the internet for more info about me.

thank you very  much  for this article, it is  much needed I  went to a church  once where the pastor  eric redmond of the rock church in greenville s.c.  made ,putting the himself up as  some  mini  monarch, putting the  people in fear  of  him while doing  dirty nasty deeds. on one occassion, he asked the church to raise $7,000 for him because  the  church  was behind in taxes and if he didnt get the  money, he would go to jail. after raising $7,000 for him through great strain on our finances, he got  up  before the whole congregation of  28 people and told us that  next week he and his 5 member entourage was  going to the Bahamas within 4 days complete with flight, hotel rooms and meals for 5 days. Needless tosay  as one who had just gave $300.00 I was angry we were hoodwinked and thats when I started  to lose my respect  for many fellowships because they are not  serving God and using the  pulpit and  that  phrase”dont  touch me  cause I am God’s anointed” to do their dirty deeds. Thats why I hope they  lock Eddie Long up  for 1000 years. he is  money hungry and deserves jail. if I or anyone else were to  do  what he allegedly did we would be in  prison. My desire is  for the state to  impose  measures to  monitor the  actions of  pastors just as the  would  anyother  non-profit  group, its a shame it has come down to that  but  that is the world we live in  now.

Why do black people continuously support a failed president, who clearly does not have our interest at heart. If Obama was white and had whites unemployment at 16%, and on welare for for three years, whites would not stop until he was gone, not black people, we only see he is black. Stupid

Leroy, this is not about politics it’s about religion.  Why don’t you take your political bullshit to the politics section of this website.

    • Dianne

This ain’t about Obama!!  and he’s not a failed President like your being an ugly minded player hater…  Your sorry ass can’t even do his job, now can you? CAN YOU!!! hell no you can’t…  Everything happening on this earth is happening according to spiritual prophecy.  Mr Wannabe / player hater… you need to take sometime to research God’s word from an (Authorized King James Version Bible) so you can get a life for yourself…  People who are putting their mouths on Obama and his family will have to pay dues to God for the words of their mouths.  African Americans will never be satisfied with anything that our God does for us, because we always flow back into the understanding of our wretched flesh, instead of learning to continuously to walk in the spirit of our true identities, which is being identitfied with Christ and not the identity of the for wall church circles and our anti-christ government…  Its people like you who have fallen in the whitemans trap once again to stop the progress of all african americans thru out the USA.  Tell me something BOO BOO McNasty, are you a republican trying to perpertraite a word in on this blog board…?   If you are a republican then your an evil filthy ass slimy snake in the grass, now go back to your blackhole…

    • Dianne

Leroy!!!!   If your an african american you NEED to be wooped… Many dumb asses like you are angry because Obama told us to stop complainning.  How soon we forget that God (destroyed) many of the children of Isreal for complainning in the wilderness…

  • Diane

Humm!!!  Why do black churches follow bad pastors…  Now thats the question of the century.  African Americans and African American church folks  behavior are all victims of ”Addicted Co-dependent Behavior” due to so much abuse down thru the generations, and it has now become our make-up until Gods total deliverance has come forth into our lives as a whole.  We have no UNITY….  In Unity God commands the blessings, without unity we have nothing coming / NO CHANGE….

    • COGIC Thieves-n-robbers

Yes!!! and your so right on time about your reply, but for right now on this blog board we african americans are the main subject, because we are always the major ones being exposed in the lime-light. I’m living here in the deep south now for God only knows how long, and I don’t even step into any of these churches at all.  I literally can’t tolerate not a one of them and I was raised in the church, and I watched my father climb from the deacon board to sunday school superintendent to assistant pastor, and he was treated like crap by church leadership, and I watched my mom get used for her gifts and credentials, and both of my parents were horribly taken advantage of thru tiths and offerings.  When my parents retired from their jobs they stopped tithing, but they still gave offerings to the funky thieving 4 wall churches / aka COGIC (Church Of God In Christ) religion, they immediately had a cold shoulder turned against them by the pastor and his family.  Money turns those bitches into real vicious snakes..  I believe in telling the truth like it really is.  I walked away from EVIL COGIC RELIGION when I was 17yrs old, and I never one day looked back.  I have a million and one horror stories I could literally tell this blog board about COGIC religion and the Apostolics too.  Their all demonic money hungry thieves, robbers, thugs and all the above.  It basically all comes down to the demonic spirit of CONTROL MANIPULATION so called perpertraiting blackmen of the cloth have over the african american community.
Many of our women have been raped, kids molested, children starved so the pastors pockets can be fat with money that should be use to feed our children and keep roofs over our heads. Pastor have been arrested because they had some damn notion they didn’t have to pay child support (funky ass bastards /funky corrupt flesh).  The word if God says (MANY are CALLED, (BUT) only a (FEW) are chosen…. the word is few (FEW!!!!  FEW!!! FEW!!!) get it!!!!   only A FEW!!!  If you lookup the word few it means only 2, so where in the hell did all these damn so called men of the cloth come from… I say straight from the pitts of hell itself.  Thank God none of them are getting one penny of my money, watching my parents get robbed all my life was enough for me and my brothers and sisters…  and if anybody has an issue with what I just said on this blog page just (KISS MY ASS)…

  • Dianne

COGIC Religions / aka Church Of God In Christ….   are one of the top PIMPS and HUSTLERS of the church world period…

  • Sheri

You will always find people all over the world who follow bad people.  This is nothing new. To address it as though this is a problem peculiar to blacks, is misleading.  What about the blacks to follow good pastors?  Are you saying they are in the minority?  If not, why ask the question?  And how about all those whites who follow the political leaders who really DON’T really have their interest at heart?  If white politicians had America’s back, one percent wouldn’t own over 40% of the wealth in this country.  But tons of white still think these people will somehow protect them, simply because they’re white.  Why do so many women follow bad men, ect. ect. Get my drift?  The real question is why can’t more peole think for themselves!

  • Chisley Byteback

When Creflo Dollar explained Eddie Long’s indiscretion as a “wreck”and admonished Long’s church members not to leave his church to join his congregation showed the influence pastors have over congregations. Most church goers only open their bible in church when they are told to turn to a chapter and verse in the bible by the preacher. Other than that most don’t read their bibles at all, and the church’s hierarcy helps control the knowledge and discipline of the pastor.Unfortunately the glory of God is being replaced by the glory of the man or woman, it says so in the Bible.

    • LadyDi777

Creflo Dollar need to be hung on a rope by his neck, then put infront of a firing squad for robbing God’s people with his manipulating pusher pimpin ass…  And Noel Jones is behind him too.  Perverts Pushers Hustlers Pimps Thieves and Robbers / aka all of the above…

Thank you sooo much….  I get so damn tired of all this yaka de yaka opinions on this blog boards.  All it does is show how much fear african americans have of these damn men of the cloth, especially when they walk like we do, talk like we do, put all their damn clothes on the same way we, and they have red blood running in their veins just like we do, tell me who died and made anyone of them our Gods?  I believe in telling the truth like it really is and not sugarcoating BS all the damn time.  Sugarcoating Bullshyt is the real / main reasons why african americans are in the positions we are in to this very day.
More blackwomen have been robbed by blackmen/ aka hustler pimpin ass preachers in the black communities / churches thru-out the USA.  Now lets tell the real truth and shame the devil.  The blackwoman has been planted in these bytches faces for centuries because thats all we knew to do to survive what we have been up against in this wretched evil white world, and our own black world too, but this is a new day, and our God has openned our eyes to many truths, and now its time for change, so there is no excuse for us to continue putting these thieving ass, smooth talking, hustlin pimpin ass bastards incharged of our lives, especially when we can have our God all to ourselves in a personal realtionship, and he won’t even steal one dime from us, he won’t even rape or molest our children, or allow any of us to go hungry, and the death angel will always pass over our doors, which means we will always have long life and more abundantly.  All of these so called men of the cloth can just kiss my ass.  God is the one who teach’s me everything I need to know, the thangs in the pulpit don’t have it, and they never will.
When you get sometime read Matthew the whole 23rd chapter, that whole chapter is written in red, meaning Jesus is the one talking, and he is speaking against the men of the cloth /aka religious leaders.  He calls them thieves, thugs, and robbers too, just read it for yourself.  Jesus even said that they don’t wanna come into his kingdom, and they don’t want us /God’s children to come into the kingdom either.  The truth will set you free.  God said (TRUST NO MAN)…  Then take a look at Matthew 13:10-17, then go back and focus on the 12th vers, and the book of Micah which is only 7 chapters long and the book of JUDE, a very very short book…  God is fixing to beat some asses big time, he’s already started, but this is nothing compared to what is to come…   Keeping Real

  • Kenneth Harrell

All of us remember the debacle caused by the refusal of the National Baptist Convention, one of the more conservative black denominations to oust the Reverend Dr Henry Lyons after his moral and criminal indiscretions were proven to be true. I must say to the person who considers this a stereotype of black churches that the Reverend Dr E.V. Hill defended his support of Lyons by stating that the white churches did not understand the black church’s message of reconciliation. If Lyons had been president of the Southern Baptist Convention he would have been forced out period and would not be able to find any SBC pulpit open to him after he served his prison sentence. It is true that there are some white Charismatic communities such as that of Bishop Earl Paulk that have been this lax but for the most part this has not been the case in white circles. But in black church circles, regardless of denomination, this is a major problem.

    • Dianne

Mr K. Harrell, at the end of your statement you said: *but in black church circles, reguardless of denomination, this is a major problem.  Thank you so much for telling the truth, telling it like it really is…  We can write long intellectual blogs and show this blog board how educated and articulate we are all day long, and some of us can become offended by whats being said about all men of the cloth right now, but the bottomline is at the end of the day, when its all said and done we still arrive back to your last statement:(its still a major problem in the black church circles)…  Let me share something with you Sir..  2 1/2 yrs ago, around this time of the year, early one morning between sleep and wake God began to speak to me.  * GOD said these words over and over and over again to ME several times, until he got my full attention *(A GREAT FALLING AWAY)… my reply was: okay Lord…  God firmly told me to focus and say those words, and I did…  God then said: *(A Great Falling Away From The Church), God said *(THEIR NOT LEAVING ME, THEIR LEAVING THE CHURCH).
This is just one of many things God has shared with me.  Religious church folk, who are not open to the spirit of God, always get so full of themselves with their panties in a huff, when God’s true messengers send them a word /warning from God that always comes with authoritive articulation and its not sugarcoated to feed their comfort zone.  Thank God I’m so pass this mess…  God has shown me, and several others threw dreams and visions that his church is not ready to recieve him in the air.  What God showed me just blew me away. I saw literally only a hand-full began to float up to the openning in the clouds.  It was something sad to see.  So these people can chat 24-7, but are they really getting the message that their God is sending them right now in this season /time and space…  Gods people have their attentions focused in (ALL) the wrong places right now, and if they don’t get on a ball and stop being so damn slowful and complacent when it comes to their God / getting into a relationship with him like he is requiring them to do, they will all be lost / seperated from God, in hell they will all open up their eyes in which it will be too late…

Now thats what I’m talking about, good reply, our God is looking for a people who will not compromise his ways in the least bit, because it is the little fox’s who eat up the vines, and I’m just fed up with excuses and lies, and lukewarm so called servants of God, selfish, don’t wanna know the truth, don’t wanna hear the truth, and can’t hear the truth, and all have the ordesity to get mad and always wanna kill off Gods true messengers just because they won’t sugarcoat and feed their filthy fleshly egos.  I welcome all of God’s chastisements that are sweeping accross america / land….  Its a sho nuff wake-up call, but the blind still can’t see because they will not humble themselves before the Lord and repent. This whole nation is being stripped,  and everybody blames it on Obama and other heads of state instead of opening up their eyes and realizing that God’s wrath is moving accross this land because of sin, Idolotry, hatred, etc etc etc…. every man has to own up to their own fault and responsibility for the fall of america from the greatest to the smallest in all areas of life, except for the Indians….  For the wages of sin is death.
PS… when we step before the throne of God to be judgement, God will not allow us to point the finger at anybody else, not even at our worst haters, its about each one of us as an individual…
