Dr. Boyce: Why Would Middle School Kids Need to be Pepper Sprayed? (Video)

byron price and dr boyce watkins discuss the pepper spray incident in norfolk

I admittedly continue to find myself outraged about the case of the Virginia middle school where a security guard decided to use pepper spray to squash a food fight in the cafeteria.  I see this incident as a glaring example of the school-to-prison pipeline, and the disproportionate manner in which black children are punished in the public school system.

Dr. Byron Price is one of the nation’s leading experts on mass incarceration and a Professor of Political Science at Texas Southern University and author of the book, “Merchandising Prisoners:  Who Really Pays for Prison Privatization?”.  Dr. Price and I explore the implications of the school-to-prison pipeline and how we can protect our children from this form of injustice.

The answer to this and other matters like this is SIMPLE — Black people have almost totally lost our insult level and we are stuck in an everyday “paralysis of analysis” and far less time calling for our community and leadership to act with direct actions !

It is easy to be an arm chair quarterback and say what everything is wrong or right.  The real question is what would YOU do if you were in the same situation as this guard?  Kids come to school with violence in their hearts and minds.  They are very desensitized to mostly any thing in the neighborhood.  So when a food fight starts and they are not paying attention to you what would you do Boyce?  Do you think these kids will care if you have a Phd. or not while they are through food?

its a damn food fight. kids are suppossed do this type of stuff (movies have a general consensus that dictates that and YES its called programming for a reason). when i was young and food fights broke out the teacher would signal off a bull horn until everyone looked around, they took us guilty one by one into the principles office and gave us after school detention. that was plenty enough to shut it down for that class generation. you obviously have NO comprehension of what kids are going through. im involved and hopefully you are not.
