I admittedly continue to find myself outraged about the case of the Virginia middle school where a security guard decided to use pepper spray to squash a food fight in the cafeteria. I see this incident as a glaring example of the school-to-prison pipeline, and the disproportionate manner in which black children are punished in the public school system.
Dr. Byron Price is one of the nation’s leading experts on mass incarceration and a Professor of Political Science at Texas Southern University and author of the book, “Merchandising Prisoners: Who Really Pays for Prison Privatization?”. Dr. Price and I explore the implications of the school-to-prison pipeline and how we can protect our children from this form of injustice.
