Congregation Members Sue Eddie Long Over Failed Investment Scheme

The legal problems continue to mount for Bishop Eddie Long.  In addition to the sexual misconduct case that has been featured in the media, there is another situation in which Long is accused of conspiring with investment adviser Ephren Taylor to defraud members of his church out of more than a million dollars in investment funds.   Taylor did a presentation before members of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, allegedly promising 20% annual returns, and a lawsuit is now claiming that Bishop Long should never have allowed it to happen.

Bishop Long and his church sponsored a “Wealth Tour Live” seminar in 2009, which some congregation members allege was nothing more than a Ponzi scheme.   Ephren Taylor is the former CEO of Capital City Corporation in Chicago.  Congregation members allege that Bishop Long told them that, ”I am responsible for everyone I bring before you and what they say,” making him legally culpable in their massive financial losses.  While investors lost hundreds of thousands of dollars, New Birth was compensated for allowing the seminar to take place.

Art Franklin, a spokesperson for New Birth, says that they aren’t ready to comment on the lawsuit.  He also points out a YouTube video showing Bishop Long pleading with Taylor to “ do the right thing by quickly resolving this matter with a positive outcome.”

Although Taylor did the presentation for the members of New Birth, the suit alleges that he was not licensed to sell investments or give investment advice in Georgia or any other state.  In an interview Taylor did with me last year, he insists that he did not have a personal financial relationship with any members of New Birth.  He was, however, the CEO of a company that received the funds, which directly connects him to the scandal.

This is part of what Taylor told me last year:

“I, in no way, came to New Birth or any other stop on the tour with the intent to scam anyone out of money. I certainly feel a great amount of compassion for anyone who suffers losses from opportunities that were tied to my stamp of approval, which is why when there seemed to be a collective outcry from the church, I instructed City Capital to respond accordingly, prior to my departure. I cannot speak to what has been done since that time, but at the end of the day, when most people in the business world would have ignored these individuals, I responded, only to face a storm of media ridicule for lack of adequate facts presented.”

One of the investors, Lillian Wells, told the Wall Street Journal that she’d received a promissory note from Capital City for $122,000 that guaranteed 20% interest at maturity.  She’d put her retirement savings into the account.  Taylor claims that when she tried to get her money back, Capital City representatives kept persuading her to remain invested.

“I’ve seen more money stolen in the name of God than any other way,” Joseph Borg, Alabama securities commissioner and a past president of the North American Securities Administrators Association said to the Wall Street Journal. “Seven out of 10 of our cases involve affinity fraud, and in the South, probably 40% to 50% have a religious angle.”

I’ve been in the field of Finance for a very long time.  I’ve taught a lot of the students who now work on Wall Street, my father is a pastor, and I’ve followed the career of Ephren Taylor.   While we can’t clearly ascertain the ones most responsible for what happened here, there are a few things we can learn from this situation:

1) When it comes to your money, be careful who you trust. There are certified investments advisers and those who are not.  According to the suit being filed by members of New Birth, Taylor did not have the necessary licenses needed to even give the presentation in the first place.  I’m sure this will be settled in court, but this is a clear red flag that someone should have noticed from the beginning.

2) Only trust your pastor if he is worthy of being trusted, and even then, realize that he may not be fully aware of everything himself. Far too many of us are quick to believe anything our pastor says, and anyone the pastor endorses.  There is no doubt that Long trusted Taylor, but this endorsement should not justify giving anyone the bulk of your retirement savings.   The sexual coercion suit filed against Bishop Long is yet another example of misguided trust being placed in him by members of his congregation (yes, I do believe that Bishop Long abused his power and coerced many of these young men into sexual acts, right under their parents’ noses).  The truth is that when it comes to your money and your kids, you should be careful about completely trusting anyone.  Jesus and faith don’t always protect you from making bad, illogical decisions.

3) Talk to an outside investment adviser before giving away your money. Not every person who gives an investment seminar in the church is trying to rip you off.   I don’t even know if Ephren Taylor was trying to harm anyone (his company could have simply made some bad investments with the money they’d received).  But it is helpful to either ensure that you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into or at least talk to someone who does.  Most investments are not risk-free, and there is almost always a chance that things aren’t going to work out.   So, if someone offers you a “guaranteed” return of more than five percent per  year, there is usually some fine print that should concern you.

4) All that glitters ain’t gold. Ephren Taylor has long been featured in media as a whiz kid with an eye for building massive amounts of wealth at an early age.  While we can’t say for sure if he deliberately scammed anyone, we can say that many of us are impressed by people with fancy suits and expensive cars, without carefully thinking about what lies underneath the surface.   Women are often misled by men with stunning status symbols, and men regularly have their lives ruined by manipulative demons with a pretty face.

The point here is that when deciding who to trust with your most valuable assets (your money, your heart, your health, etc), substance and character should be more important than flash.  We can’t fully say that Taylor is not a man of substance, but the way he is dodging his connection to Capital City leaves me concerned that he isn’t able or willing to take responsibility for the fact that he rolled into Bishop Long’s church and utilized the pastor’s credibility to convince congregation members to trust him with their money.  They didn’t trust Capital City….they trusted Ephren Taylor and Bishop Long.  That fact must remain clear.

What I see in this case is blame being thrown around from one party to another:  The congregation is blaming Bishop Long (in the lawsuit).  Bishop Long is blaming Ephren Taylor (in the YouTube video).  Ephren Taylor appears to be blaming Capital City, as if the CEO doesn’t directly control what a company does with its resources.  This “accountability hot potato toss” is interesting, since it appears that there is plenty of blame to go around.

In the court of law, I suspect that both Long and Taylor will be held responsible for misguiding the flock, even though the flock should have been a bit more careful.  Seeing someone punished for a financial calamity doesn’t always mean that there was ill intent.  Taylor and Capital City may have simply taken more risk than they should have, leaving New Birth Members wiping the financial blood up off the floor.  But this is the culture of Wall Street, where risks are taken every day with our money, and we don’t even know about them until things go wrong.

This situation is unfortunate for everyone.

The only thing I can say about this is, I think this is just the beginning for Eddie Long. But, you reap what you sow, so there you go.

I cannot understand for the life of me why a person would invest their money without doing any research on the person, the company and the history of the company.

What a sad  and late lesson for some to learn .  Please believe, these scums will have to deal with Karma.

Please realize that so many people of older age and black were not taught in schools or higher learning.  They in fact, relied on their “trusted” pastor, elder, deacon, etc.  So many didn’t trust doctors but relied on the clergy to pray for them.   It is a shame that those who were faithful and naive got taken by liars and cheats.  But in the end, God will prevail.  Do unto others is the key.  And, vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord.

Laughing out loud… because some of the last blog comments concerning Eddie Long were: “I’m tired of hearing about Eddie Long”….  LOL like I said!!!  it ain’t over with until God says its over with, and your right Melanin E, “THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF EDDIE LONG”, I believe he’s going to be the one used by God as a great example and great exposure concerning all the (HUSTLERS and PIMPS) in the pulpit.  While some people of God are not clueless, the ones who are clueless tip the scales big time to preachers of (all) like Eddie Long, and I don’t trust (NONE OF THEM), because God said in his word probatum (TRUST NO MAN) umwah!!!  But so-called christians love to dress-up / sugarcoat the word of God instead of excepting it as it is.
There is a whole chapter in the bible /word of God aka: the book of MATTHEWS 23rd chapter, the whole chapter is written in (RED), meaning Jesus was the one speaking to his people *(Jesus Warns The Religious Leaders)…  Jesus called all of them (SNAKES, VIPERS, THIEVES, THUGS, HYPOCRITES, BLIND FOOLS AND BLIND GUIDES), and he didn’t have 2 list of names, the who did and the who didn’t either.  If any so-called christians have any kind of spiritual discernment to hear what the spirit of God was warning to his people, you can tell and spiritually discern it for yourself that Jesus was speaking with a “serious attitude” against the men of religious law aka: Pharsiees BISHOPS, PASTORS, Ministers, Priest and all of the above (LEADERSHIP) period…  The children of God have been (ROBBED and LEAD by BLIND LEADERS) for a long time, only because the children of God (REFUSE) to search out the scripters and knock at the doors, and keep knocking like Jesus told them to in the first place… *(FOR MY PEOPLE PERISH FOR (LACK) OF KNOWLEDGE), because they (REFUSE) the knowledge I put before them…  Your just damn lost, and thats just the bottomline, and until you get tired of being sick and tired of being JACKED OFF by all the pulpit pimps and hustlers, they just gonna keep on robbing all your clueless donkey asses…  When you know the truth and you still follow after them, then you need to be robbed for putting a piece of daily decaying flesh higher then your God.  The word of God says: THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE…  If your being Robbed by the men of the cloth, then you ain’t free….  This news also reveals why many people are still members of EDDIE LONGS congregation, because they have too much money invested behind that GREASY SNAKE, who thinks he’s God almighty anyway… so let this be a lesson to the (HOPEFULLY NOW WISE)… Fall down on your face and start worshiping the true and living God instead of a piece of damn decaying flesh…  Don’t get mad / Get glad…       Keeping It Real For Ya!!!!

That’s why I’m Spiritual and not Religious. I got that direct connect to the creator. Speaks thru intuition, gut feelings, insight, awareness, etc… Don’t have to pay 10% tithes, don’t have to get hustled every sunday to giving even more money. I can gain knowledge from many diverse guides/sources not just one person. I can decide my charitable contributions and to whom and don’t have to discuss with anyone or just give blindly. Not sure when people are going to wake up not just with religion but also with politics, their health and many other aspects of life. Though I understand hard to wake up with when you can’t let go of the Massa’s(master-white man desired thinking for you) mental grip. So, glad knowledge came to me and I woke up. Its a BEAUTIFUL THING!!

    • Dianne

Amen…  Isn’t it nice to walk down that road you very seldom see a travelor?  Lovin and having the best times of your life walking in the freedoms of Christ, nolonger tied to the emotions of the flesh, nolonger living the life of a controlled 4 wall church religious fanatic, nolonger acting like the walking dead /blind leading the blind, we’re just plain ole free’d-up foreal.  Glad to know you Guest…  PS: It’s a beautiful thing to always be able to hear the voice of God, and to always be able to communicate with him at the drop of a dime anytime we want.  That makes us truely blessed in a day such as this, especially when we know that our personal relationship with our God is the lambs blood over our door-post that keeps the death angel away/ pass us over… LOL LOL My God is one bad mamma Jamma!!!

People who buy into the “prosperity gospel” are no different than anyone else whose focus is money. “If any man teach otherwise . . . . He is proud knowing nothing . . . . supposing that prosperity is godliness. But godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:3-6).”

Investments are a gamble.  That people did not realize the returns promised is no surprise given the economy.  They took a risk.  I don’t see this necessarily as any misconduct on the part of the pastor or the investment broker.  I do question what “money changers” are doing peddling their wares in a church of Jesus Christ (who ran them out of the temple during his life on earth).  We should not be too quick to jump on the “bandwagon” of “let’s get Eddie Long” without having more information.  Perhaps the alleged sexual misconduct is what his church members should be suing him for.  We must stop worshiping pastors, politicians, academicians, physicians, celebrities, media pundits, lawyers, scientists and businessmen because they are black and lovable.  We must take responsibility for their actions as our leaders and guides by demanding their ouster or sanction when they misguide us or have abused and violated our trust.

  • Zkisaac

I think we all do not know how and where money goes too after we the people give it to the church on Sunday, And we do not know where are money is going or how it is used in the investment World like Wall Street, Another example is paying your car insurance every month, let’s say you do not get in a car accident for the whole year, where is your money that you gave the insurance company for that whole year? Of course you do not know! That is the whole idea for people like blacks, latinos, and other ethnics groups, and whites too. To keep people in poverty, and to keep the elite rich and in power. Don’t you realize that power was turned on it’s face by electing the first minority President! And if people wanted to make history cry out loud, like they did for Barack Obama, We could of elected our First Woman President in Hilliary Clinton! People please do not get suckerd like they been doing this in media news and radio over the last few years to weaken our power in numbers to not vote for our better interest. You have to understand that from now on we may never have a white male President of the United States! Because we have the power in numbers to vote for a woman, latino, asian, black, to be the President from now on! But the media will keep you and me dumb to this true fact. So you and I have to share and become better educated to teach us how to lift ourselves out of proverty, What and Where does our money go to after we put it in Church and in investing in Wall Street, That is just a simple basic first step to getting control of how are dollars are working and that we can decide if it’s worth putting our dollars into these institution’s. We can ask then ourselves (“what returns will we get back and when”) Is it worth it? When you and I can see where money is going too, and who it is going too,  Then we as people have a better chance in life to help one another to lift one another out of proverty and into a better life. One more thing before I leave this topic, Please vote for canidates that will help Barack Obama Pass his policies, or his plans! We have alot of elected people that we did not vote for which is The Tea Party folks, And Republicans that won alot of power in the 2010 midterm elections to have control and power over the President Barack Obama and his policies or plans.  It was our fault to not come out and vote for Pres. Obama’s members of congress to help him get his plans through congress! We blew it big time, Because I said to you all above, That we have the power and numbers to never vote in a white male again in this country For President!  That’s how much power we have and that the news media does not want us to know or use again. There is no way in hell that you let these people come in and control President Obama and his plans to help us in this economic mess that the Republicans left us in after Bush was President. How could we not come out in numbers to vote Obama’s people In 2010 midterms elections to let the Tea Party and Republicans! We had the power and numbers and we did not come out in large enough voters to vote are interest in getting jobs and helping to keep education affordable and low. We blew it Big Time, But This Time Around In 2012, We better get out there and Vote And Get These Tea Party And Republicans, out of that White House, So That The President can get on with helping us the people lift up and live a better life!

Some misinformation here on payments to insurance companies(we pay for a speculative need), Zkisaac’s post has some very good points.  And the 99% had better unite and smell the coffee.  The 1% vultures are coming for us.

One of the main problems people have today is they go to church for the wrong reasons. We go for the pastor, choir, to be seen, to say I attend this mega-church, I go the affluent church, etc. I go to church to give thanks to God for His goodness, worship and praise Him and have true felowship with my fellow believers. We all have bibles and study guides to help us inderstand the Word. The most important thing we have is the receiving of the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us in understanding God’s Word. But greed and glamour is guiding us instead of the Spirit of God. If we would read the Old and New Testament with understanding we would see that the preacher has no business controling God’s money. I am a preacher and firmly believe that the majority of the monies which include tithes go to the financing of the house of God, not to turn the preacher into a Pimp. Serve God not man.

    • Dianne

I hear ya, but just go over the book of Micah again with a listening ear to what the spirit of God is saying right now to all Leaders of the church, and to his people too, and make sure you don’t fit into (not one of those catagories), due to lack of understanding, and not allowing God to continuely take you to a higher level of  spiritual conscience and insight into his word, and into relationship/ profound relationship with him.  From what God has been ministering to me lately: (I have found none to be exempt right now), thank God I’m not walking in your shoes / your position right now.  And I’m not judging you, I;m judging what God’s word is saying, and God does not give any stipulations / list of who’s innocent and who’s not innocent….  All leaders are now in a dangerous place now….

  • VB

I must admit to being fascinated that so many people who consider themselves devout believers in God and Jesus Christ also believe that super compensated Preachers have some special relationship with the ” Almighty ” and ignore their obvious devotion to money and their failure to behave in a ” Jesus Like Manner ” .What accounts for so many People believing that people like Benny Hinn could touch someone and restore their sight , or ability to ability to walk ? How was Jim Jones able to convince people to give all of their possessions , give unto him their Wives for sex, or feed their Children and themselves suicidal poisons ?Is there a difference between a cult and some Churches ?Is there something about the Black Community that makes us more susceptible to the ” God Wants You To Be Wealthy Stories ” told by ” Pimp Like ” Orators like Long, Frederick K. Price ( tells his audience that he and his Wife drive a different color Rolls for every day of the week ) , Creflo Dollar ( what a name has now promoted his Wife so they can make “mo money, mo money ,mo money ” ) , and others ? As for long he has talked his way into remaining at the head of this large congregation in spite of the apparent sexual abuse and immorality of taking advantage of young boys , his about face in fighting the allegations , his refusal to admit any wrong doing what so ever, and the payout of a reported 15 million dollar settlement that no doubt came from the funds of the Church. I have no doubt that he will be able to overcome this obvious investment fraud and continue to fool some of the people all of the time .

    • Dianne

That’s right brother, you speak the truth, now this is what I’m talking about…  These people fear these men of the cloth, and they have all been brainwashed and brow-beatened by these leaders / aka men of the cloth that they’re going to hell if they don’t give them their money.  The people of God lose because they didn’t have enough faith and belief to ask God where he wants them to put their 10% tiths for each month.  And tithing is not always given in the form of money, and you don’t see God with a private jet, rollsroyce, or a bently either, and all of the above…  I’ve been waiting on this day of exposure for a long time now, and I was raised a COGIC kid, father was an assistant pastor too.  I escaped COGIC when I was 17yrs old, and believe me I flee’d like the dickens and never went back… To me they are the worst religious occult, theives and robbers in the church world…  but to God all of them have falling short leaving no stone on top of another…  Men of the cloth are daily decaying flesh just like the rest of us are, they ain’t nobody special, and that is the word. Its time for everybody to stop sugarcoating BS, and start bringing the truth on home so deliverance can began to fall on the african american communities thru out the USA…  Until the sugarcoating stops, african americans in the church will remain in bondage to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, which can only be found in the hearts of the Gods true believers of the faith, and its not that many of us. There’s more fakes then there are true believers of the faith, monkey’s see / monkey’s do….

It is obvious that Eddie Long is a liar. Its sad that his congregation and black people will rather close their eyes and ears to what Eddie long has done towards the youth in their church. These types of acts isnt spiritual nor of God. His members needs to stop sugar coating his actions and face the truth about their pastor. The fact is that Eddie long did molest those young men. What pastor would send pictures of himself in spandex to a bunch of young men unless he is gay or have gay tendacies. Sometimes I listen to the pastors that is always harping on subjects that they call shame and sin. If they are always teaching on these lessons every time the church doors are open. Then maybe these are areas that they are having problems getting under control themselves as a christian and havent been set free from. It doesnt take a brain scientist to know this., because just because a man becomes a pastor doesnt makes him a perfectionist and too many times black people wants to uplift and and make their ministers God.Well there’s only one that is Good as Jesus says and thats the Father above.

  • Karla

A closet homosexual masquerading as a strong Christian pastor now also revealed as being a  conniving crook! And he still has supporters. One only has to read and follow the teachings of the Bible, if that is their belief, not pay someone mega dollars to preach or entertain you. He has proven himself to be a charlatan!

    • Diane

Huh!!!!  A Charlatan is just putting it mildly…  He worst then that, he’s a damn HARLOT!!! and all the above.  It was always about money, and for those people to continue to sit up under him knowing what they, and being exposed before the whole world, and the church world makes them worst off then he is, especially if they have children.  This whole episode of Eddie Long is mind blowing, and it shouldn’t be because God warned his people about the men of the cloth in the bible.  God has given his people too much information so that we will see the filthy enemy before he arrive at our destination, but we felled ourselves, and sold ourselves short because we don’t read and study his word enough to ask God questions instead of believing everything these hustler pimpin ass robbers tell us.
Bottomline those who are caught-up are just ass guilty as he is…  Because they worship the THINGS more then they worship their God…

  • Dorothy

WHAT THE HELL !!!!  I had no idea that Eddie Long was still the Pastor at New Birth; and why is he still a Bishop ?  This is beginning to look like the same pass that the Catholic church has given its Priests, when they molest young Boys and Girls; and have affairs with the wives of parishioners.  The fifteen million dollars Long allegedly payed out to his victims, probably came from the investments some of his members made in this scheme.  If I were fool enough to give these people my money, you best believe this article would read totally different. He (Long) would have to give up everything he owned; and a piece of his ass too; before I let him walk the streets, especially if I was the Woman who invested her retirement funds. Someone has to make restitution for this wrong; and his name is Eddie Long.

  • Jakejacobsen

Dear Bishop Eddie, The truth will set you free. Probably broke and in jail in your case. However, sooner or later you will tell the truth and feel better for it.
