Dr. Boyce: Five Reasons the NBA is Now Afraid of Black Men

lebron james, dwyane wade, nba lockoutMany of us read with interest about the blow up between NBA superstar Dwyane Wade and commissioner David Stern.  In a heated discussion that took place during the pending NBA lockout, Wade told Stern that he “isn’t his child,” and then stormed out of the meeting.  I read about the interaction with curiosity, wondering whether or not I was witnessing the kind of revolt that hasn’t been seen among black athletes since the 1960s.

If this is the case, then NBA team owners are rightfully nervous.  If black professional athletes were to get even a whiff of the power that they truly possess, they’d be amazed at what they could do.  Here are five reasons that the NBA now has good reason to fear black men:

1) The athletes have options: Unlike the NFL, there is a strong global market for well-branded professional basketball players.  When I taught a class in China, I was amazed by the fact that every single boy in my class loved the game of basketball; every television in the cafeteria featured the NBA finals, and one of my students actually told me that every boy he knows plays basketball at least once  a week.  There are opportunities for players around the world, so most high quality players (except for the perpetually sad Delonte West, who is working in a hardware store) have something to do during the lockout.  What’s even worse for team owners is that the more the players spend time playing overseas, the more they may realize that it’s not such a terrible existence after all.  As in any relationship (dating, professional, etc.), having options is almost always a good thing.

2) They are not afraid: Wade’s blow up at Commissioner Stern has all the racial undertones of a scene from the movie “Roots.”  The fact that Wade referred to Stern as “David” on multiple occasions also says that Wade is not interested in submitting to the standard social hierarchy that exists between black men and old, wealthy white guys.

Some athletes work to maintain stereotypes of ignorance and a superficial focus on all things material, while some have learned that wealth must be mixed with thoughtful behavior in order to maintain itself.  When one puts intelligence, power, unity and courage all in the same room, you’ve got the socio-political equivalent of a nuclear bomb.  These brothers don’t appear to be backing down.

3) They know how to work together: The fact that Wade conspired with LeBron James to play together in Miami says that these guys have risen above the divide-and-conquer mentality typically held among professional athletes.  They communicate with one another and seem to have realized that joining forces gives them a tremendous amount of power both on and off the court.   Historically, NBA labor negotiations have been heavily skewed in favor of team owners, who vote in lockstep on nearly every issue.  By engaging in the same degree of collusion, Wade and his colleagues have tipped the scales back at least a little bit.

4) They’re a lot more educated than they used to be: With the advent of the Internet, there has been an explosion in the sharing of ideas and information.  It’s no longer cool for black men to be ignorant, and athletes can not only reach the public on their own accord, but they also have unprecedented access to intellectual resources.  By watching many of their predecessors end up broke and powerless, some (not all) NBA athletes come to the league equipped with the tools necessary to be successful in both life and sports.  They realize that being financially and politically savvy are just as important as being able to dunk a basketball.

5) They are principled and battle-hardened: Dwyane Wade (I’ve never met him, only his publicist, who warned me to stop misspelling his name in my articles – I still want to call him “Dwayne” – why did his mama switch the letters anyway?) appears to be a man with a degree of life experience and conscientiousness that goes above and beyond the size of his paycheck.  I watched this single dad fight like hell for the right to see his sons, and in quite a few ways, Wade is openly defiant of nearly every stereotype the American public wants to have about black men in this country.  The fact that he and James have already stated that they have no problem sitting out for an entire season serves as notice to NBA owners that by utilizing hard ball negotiating tactics, they are jeopardizing the existence and economic stability of the NBA – it’s scary to fight with an opponent who is willing to go down bloody and burning.

Beyond the financial implications of the NBA lockout negotiations lies a deeper and more serious display of racial dynamics at work.  While team owners are still going to put the hammer on the heads of the athletes, we may see a dramatic shift in the athlete-owner paradigm.  In the nervous eyes of NBA owners, they may end up naming this drama “The Rise of the Planet of the Athletes.”

  • Only the beginning

Both lockouts have had to have made those athletes reflect on life after the pro-ball check stops coming in. This is shifting things in a way that is promoting unity and empowerment. I think all of this is just the beginning…

  • John

NBA players will feel it once they start losing money. The amount of money they make in the NBA is nothing like what 99% of them would see internationally. Every few years the top players are replaced by a new crop. And that new crop will take any kind of millions to play a game and have fun for a living. If somebody were to start say, a white’s only league it would not only be very profitable but the action on the court would be just as entertaining, kind of like watching a lot of college ball. Then there would be owners that are “scared of white men.” But then again I’m pretty sure the whole black community would be screaming how racist it is to have white’s playing basketball professionally, and how it’s completely unfair. How interesting would that be to see TV ratings, merchandise and ticket sales for white athletes?

    • Dfonseca89

Lol! Whites only league? They had that once… But then the NBA it got more exciting

The NBA was never an all white league. George Thomas and John Higginbottom passed for white when the played with the Fort Wayne Pistons in the 1940′s. Mr.Thomas is my great uncle, and there were other Blacks who played in the NBA. But they played as white men because of the harsh policy of James Crow.

    • Anonymous

John: You don’t get it – economics and politics are interdependent in professional sports. And the athletes should use their collective leverage against ownership to protect their equity in the business enterprise. I gather from your white’s only comment that you are unaware of the excitement Black baseball players created in the Jim Crow era, and the 60s and 70s after desegregation. The Black players in those eras played with superior speed and gusto, an element missing in recent decades. It’s true tennis and golf have thrived as white dominated sports, I think the quality of competition in basketball, baseball, and football would suffer without the contributions of Black athletes. Tiger Woods demise in golf is a good example.

      • Tor

Funny you mention Tiger Woods, though, as he is more Thai than African-American and yet you claim him to be only “one” of them.
But sure, there is no denying that the best NBA-, NFL-players are black.

  • Isellurstuff

I for one, a basketball fan, hope that the season is cancelled. I can no longer take my kids to watch a game without fear of “Black Men”. To state that the owners are afraid of highly ignorant individuals is laughable to say the least. Besides their expected negative appearance, tattoos coming out of this ying-yang, Wade showed his true ignorance. To adress someone superior to you, in business not meant racial, by their fist name and storm out of the meeting showed that he is in fact a child.

Cancel the damn season, let them play overseas…

    Good riddance!

    • blackchild

that statement says more about you and your perceive value then it does the athlete. They aren’t on a plantation anymore and Stern isn’t owed a yessir / no sir boss.

    • jenkinsk

If you believe others are superior to you, that is your own personal affair. The bottom line…no one shows up to see David Stern or any owner of an NBA franchise sign papers. People invest time, and pay hard earned money to watch allegedly ignorant athletes play Basketball at the highest level of play.

Considering the game of Basketball is an international sport with professional leagues in several nations…well, I believe these alleged ignorant and scary black athletes have a choice. And I think it would be good for them to take advantage of their options. Why? Because the NBA and franchise owners have a plantation mentality. I pray these young men figure this shit out and start demanding more from the league.

People, such as yourself, are losers. You simply hate the fact you cannot compete with males physically and mentally superior to you. Obviously professional athletes have superior brain function, which translates to superior physical ability. At the end of the day, all you and your ilk can do is latch on to the dumb ass attitude, behavior, and low character displayed by a minority of professional athletes. You simply ignore the majority of professional athletes who mind the business and show up to work everyday.

      Good riddance to you!

      • Godwin

No.  You are wrong.  Don’t you remember the NBA before Stern?  As a black man, I don’t have a problem with players showing respect to a commissioner (black or white).  And no, I’m not playing Tom.  I’ve carried the flag of Afro-American equality when “afro” was still acceptable.  Barkley has it right–black children are being fooled into thinking the only path to success is sports and entertainment.  Manners and social comportment never hurt anyone.

You are guilty of racism.  Don’t tell people that they “hate” or that one race is “physically superior” because they express a viewpoint that differs from yours.

You are why I voted for O’bama and now I’m supporting Herman Cane.

        • Anonymous

In the diss-down between David Stern and Dwayne Wade social comportment was waived by Stern, when he pointed his fingers at Wade. The confab of NBA players and commissioner Stern was about serious business – and I agree with Wade’s position in the beef with Stern. Wade demanded to be treated like a man. It appears that Wade has some knowledge of the racial schism in our society and a healthy ego, qualities that can help gain the objective in a power play with a czar like Stern.

The problem with Herman Cain is his extreme radical views on a range of important issues foreign and domestic. It’s a given that any man who is supported by FoxNews, Limpbaugh, Trump, and Hannity is horrible for the best interests of Black Americans and others who aren’t independently wealthy. I think Herman Cain and all of his teabag/Republican cohorts would appoint to the Supreme Court more screwballs like Clarence Thomas and John Roberts. I will vote for President Barack Obama in 2012, because he is best suited for the job.

      • guest

“Obviously professional athletes have superior brain function, which translates to superior physical ability.”  Steven Hawking, Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, anyone who is a member of mensa, etc, etc… So you are saying all of these people have superior physical ability?  Do you really believe this shit?  Come on.  Some of the most gifted and talented athletes are dumb as rocks.  Ball in hoop… sorry, but there is not a lot of brain power needed for that.

the players dont care if you or your son come to any games!!!! the owners dont have a leg to stand on they make their money of the sweat of others!!!! lets not forget this my pale face friend!!! they have enough money to finish degrees without government money i hope this does not offend you BLACK MEN WITH COLLEGE DEGREES!!! so who will the owners have then you METH BUYERS!!!!

The players  don’t need you or your son as a fan. These guys are watched and have fans from all over all over world. This is the problem with white people. Many of you don’t understand that you are not as powerful as you once were. There are other currencies in the world which are more valuable than the dollar.

Then please move on and use them.

    • Queenbee000

what a telling statement; and then you say that you didn’t mean it racially just in a business way.  people like you try so hard to defent their racist rants/tendencies.  If I am Mr. Wade then you can be Mr. Stern.  if I am Dwayne to you, then you are Dave to me.  In a business situation they are equals.  In a personal situation they are equals.  Players stand up for what you feels is fair and resonable.

    • Info

who said the NBA owners was superior to the players. That state spils with racism and objectifies the plantation owner mentality of America. Contract talks denotes equality. I provide something for you in exchange for something else.

  • Satchbob

“ In a heated discussion taking place during the pending NBA lockout, Wade told Stern that he “isn’t his child,” and then stormed out of the meeting.” Well I guess Wade showed that big pee pee face.

  • OneFather

The issue is here that we feel it necessary to put it in terms of “black & white” first.  If you were being treated unfairly at work and you were an independent contractor who didn’t look at “money” first but the quality of his/her environment what you say?

Going to the ”black & white” issue now.  We need to understand that whatever your skin color if your poor/rich your poor/rich.  In these situations if those poor/rich people feel as though it is one group of poor/rich over another racial tension is created. However, If one poor/rich helps another despite color and are not influenced by antagonist.  We’ll see that they will freely support and grow strong together.  A great Teacher once said “love your enemies”.  Often the “real enemy” pits one group against the other then watches as the two or more destroy each other.  The group not realizing that they are in fact brothers/sisters.

  • Kathymuhammad

That’s right! Its time for black professional athletes to stop acting like puppets, buffoons and toys for white corporate media, teams owners, etc and start being the men that they are demanding respect.  You may pay me good money but I am worth that and so much more, so don’t act like you are doing me a favor because they are making these white men big dollars as well.  Stand up black men and make us proud!

    • Embrace

They also need to return to their black women and leave the caucasion females with their mates. Be a man for the cause. I have never seen the caucasion female stand up for the black male athletes. When trouble arrise, the black women are on their side. When he’s spending his money, why  are we not good enough to be by his side. Now, What’s wrong with that picture?

Why don’t you stand up against the bankers and their associates in the USA instead of you are against exploiters?
So if Wade, LeBron etc get to earn a few million $$$ more a year it will make you proud? Strange, but it doesn’t make me proud on behalf of all the European players if they get a pay hike.
Here is the racial break down in the NBA

      Black: 76%
      White: 20%
      Hispanic: 3%
      Asian: 1%

  • Rdonjonesiii

I think it is the consequience of the monster you created dr.frankenstein, deal with it!!!! Ibelieve rich or poor racist white people have aproblem with blacks stepping out of the restraints that are placed on them from birth to become wealthier than them……GO FOR IT PLAYERS

  • Anonymous

I agree with Dr. Boyce’s critical critique of the present crisis between the owners, and players.
Many of these NBA teams are loosing money because of poor fiscal management, which is not the fault of any of the players.
In reference to Black players being on the plantation; I don’t know any Plantation in the Antebellum South or anywhere in the African Disaspora that the enslaved Africans made  that kind of money. But I must admit that the tactics employed by International Bankers such as David Stern is reminiscent of the relationship between the master, and the enslaved Africans in the Antebellum period.

  • mike

This is very inspiring to hear that people are knowing and believing in their worth, irrespective of race, culture or creed!

  • Cricket

I assume these people are really afraid their white women will follow our black men and get them to marry. I know this from a coule associates that are white women, complaining their men aren’t sexually satisifing. These are women , who if I were a man wouldn’t let sleep with my dog. Thery are poor white trash, but able to attract black ball players.
I don’t care who ore what race people are marring, but if you want trash, you can get it in your own race. I believeif you’re in love, then stay together, byt if they’re after the money (and most are) run very fast away from them. Old saying: “A Fool and his money are soon parted!

  • David Pulliam

I always think it’s funny when people in entertainment, such as athletes, see themselves as a “partner” or equivalent to an owner.. Because surprise, surprise they are not!

The Celtics continued after Bill Russell, The Lakers continued after Magic, and The Bulls continued after Jordan (considered by some the greatest ever).

The league will always exist and the owners are greater than group of players.

    • Anonymous

PlayerS have the same ability to unionize as other workers. Individuals always become stronger by working together. Because there are only a handful of individuals in the world that have the skills of a Wade and James they have even more power than, say, an autoworker.

The owners may have MORE power but the fact that the players can shut down the league for even a season demonstrates their own.

    • Anonymous

Without the players, there is no NBA. People come to see players not owners.

  • Tunjii

All they need do is take a hard lesson at those strong Black athletes of the late 1950′s and 1960′s, athletes such as Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Curt Flood, Rafer Johnson, John Carlos, etc. These are the men I respect. Stand tall and stay together.

The players render a service and they agree to payment with the owners of the game (League). What are the options if any play-get paid, or not to play- not get paid by the owners (League). As a player or owner knowing your value can give you options, competition benefits the majority, the lack of competition benefits the few. Those who manipulate don’t like to be manipulated. All is fare in “Love and Basketball”.

  • Evajones64

when will these young prince wake up and realize they have the power.  We need you future kings( black women and young men and young women).  You have the power to change lives, not just make it rain or booty watchin’.  You have the power to build a great nation which is quickly falling to  std’s, drinking and drugs and a lot of little bastards running around thinking that they rule the world.  We need you all to take a stand, if you don’t stand for something worth while you will fall for anything.  You don’t have to be satan’s helper the rest of your life, you have been given a talent from GOD and he wants you to use it for good.  You are human and you have the right to speak, so far while this country is still free.  They are slowly moving us back to slavery, don’t let them, don’t give them that power. God is waiting on you to call upon him to give you the power and strength you need to fight.

    • OneFather

Well said!  Completely agree!!  If only we realized that most anything worth mentioning today in science, tech, history ect.  There has always been a person of color (black, brown, red, yellow).  But so many times it has been stolen and they written out of many books.

So, in otherwise, if those black should win their case against the NBA “owner” and get a few million $$$ more a year….your life, as well as that or other blacks who are “struggling”, will – by some magic – automatically be “up-graded” as well…???

  • BlackBeauty

Dr. Boyce, PLEASE with your foolish titles!! The NBA is NOT afraid of BLACK MEN!  You keep putting out these stereotypical “baiting/inciting” titles. For your information there have always been intelligent Black men in the NBA!  Not all of them were ignorant, can’t think properly,  have no business smarts, and could only play BB! I swear, sometimes you can come up with pure crap! Have more respect for Black people/men then you have given them/us.  We/they are not all ignorant!

    PLAYING DESTRUCTIVE GAMES WITH OURSELVES
    By David W. Johnson, Jr.

When will adults wakeup to the dumbness we are doing?
Adults we are just destroying ourselves and our children
Thanks to our neglect, death is what children are pursing
Why, because they have few adults on whom to depend

Adults stop blaming the children and look in the mirror
Gone are the days when communities looked out for all
Now communities drink, drug, rob, kill and live in terror
Instead of helping our children, adults watch them brawl

Schools rec. centers and libraries, closing on a daily bases
You know what’s opening, jails, prisons and liquor stores is
Giving children a few positive but lots of negative places
African American lives these days are more like show biz

A poor little baby’s body placed in a bag and left in a park
Mother charged with murder of child’s body found inside the bag
We abuse our children but run outside soon as our pet dog bark
Tell me, why wouldn’t something like this throw up a red flag

Instead of trying to help some can read this an actually laugh
A worthless father beat, raped and impregnated his daughters
People like that should be jailed and ignored like a rotten shaft
Like pigs and cattle, perverts should be subject the slaughters

Adults, you want positive changes in yours and children’s lives?
Mother and son raped, killed and scaled disabled woman
Parents, children need role-models not drugs, guns and knives
So hard for a woman or child to find an honest and sincere man

Males, stop thinking getting a female pregnant makes you a Man
You are like knickknacks setting on your grandmother’s shelves
Stop falling for our enemies games and get yourself a Real Plan
Right now we are “Playing Destructive Games With Ourselves”

Just speaking about my City’s NBA owner, who just last season (2010-11) had the City of Indianapolis give the Indiana Pacers, $10,000,000 for “operating costs” for Conseco Fieldhouse. This is Simon Properties, the World’s Largest Shopping Mall Developer asking the City of Indianapolis for some Corporate Welfare, but had enough capitol to pursue a “hostile takeover” of the World’s 2nd largest Shopping Mall Developer who was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2010. I just thought I’d put that out there, so you have an idea of what they’re dealing with.

who cares about the NBA, owners or players. you are arguing about elite groups who have about as much interest in the other 99.9999% of blacks, as the owners have in the other 99.999999% of whites or blacks. we should all be caring instead about the very, very, very high percentage of children, of all persuasions, who are being left behind, and without hope, due to poor education, poor family relationships, poor health, and poor role models who will actually be of some benefit in their lives – and the real world in which they will live…that is what this author should really be addressing…

    • Tor

Totally agree. I find it amusing that so many African-Americans are beliving those black NBA players are fighting for black people’s right in the USA. All they care about is their own pockets – well, their agent’s pockets as well. It just show what a material thinking many people have when they equates millionairs’ fight for more money as a racial/social fight, as if black people in general will benefit from it.

  • Mondrevanderlee

    Dr. Boyce
Who cares? It’s not a black or white issue as you would lead people to believe in your little world. It’s about green! If I could make more money going someplace else I would go too. All ball players black, white, yellow or whatever have a choice because they are in demand in a world market and if they don’t work out something here they have other options. You make a lot of money fueling the black/white racist theme.

    • Willdgray

That’s because blacks as a segment of society have become the biggest racist group in the country.Look at the things that are said and done by the so called black leaders (waters, sharpton, jackson etc etc a group of self serving F%@ks:disqus
if there ever was one) they have no interest in in an agenda that appeals to everyone. Can you imagine the uproar if there was a latino or white miss america pagant or the equivilant to the naacp(destroying the country one lawsuit at a time) for these groups. Look what they do to successful black people who speak up about everyone just being reasonable and heaven forbid responsible for themselves. Tom this Tom that….F&@k you I have grown tired of the banter and as a result have quit supporting anything to do with folks or groups like this. Players don’t like the deal don’t play… just won’t whine like a bunch sorry bitch’s when they replace your ass with someone who does want to play.

Wow, I’ve never witnessed such “solidarity” for a bigger bunch of pampered, overpaid egotistical, grown-ass men playing a child’s game.

Lather, rinse, repeat: it a children’s game and they are fortunate to have jobs at all.

Jeez, no wonder America is in such trouble with this “entitlement virus” infecting every aspect of our lives.

  • Ray69309

Seems like all These black men forget where they came from. Blacks have had the same opportunities that my white ass has had my whole life and now that they have money, they think they can steer the ship. They are biting the hand that fed them… That doesnt work anywhere, black or white.

Black men did not forget where they came from. They finally remembered their history of being the greatest civilzationthe world has ever known and they can control any entity they choose.

    A poor
little baby’s body placed in a bag and left in a park

    Mother charged with
murder of child’s body found inside the bag

    We abuse our children
but run outside soon as our pet dog bark

    Tell me, why
wouldn’t something like this throw up a red flag

Instead of trying to help some can read this
    an actually laugh

A worthless father beat, raped and
    impregnated his daughters

    People like that
should be jailed and ignored like a rotten shaft

    Like pigs and
cattle, perverts should be subject the slaughters

    Adults, you want
positive changes in yours and children’s lives?

    Mother
and son raped, killed and scaled disabled woman

    Parents, children
need role-models not drugs, guns and knives

So hard for a woman or child to find an
    honest and sincere man

Males, stop thinking getting a female
    pregnant makes you a Man

You are like knickknacks setting on your grandmother’s
    shelves

Stop falling for our enemies games and get
    yourself a Real Plan

Right now we are “Playing Destructive Games With Ourselves”

    MESSAGE
    GOD TOLD ME TO SHARE

    By: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Stop, take a break my Son and listen to me

Blessed are those who truly keep my ways

There is nothing which everyone will agree

Nor will everyone choose to give you praise

You listen to My instructions and be wise

Whatever you do, please do not ignore them

Instead of the truth, many prefer telling
    lies

Penalty, Father God, they will never see
    Him

Blessed are those who will listen to our God

Watching daily at His door until called home

Why choose to be part of Satan’s evil squad

Instead of with God, with evildoers you roam

God showed me if you find Him you find life

You will be blessed to receive favor from God

God gets you through Satan’s toils and
    strife

Stop faking; God knows when it’s all a
    façade

Fail to find God and you destroy
    yourself

If you choose to hate God, you love
    death

Do you want to help God or set on a
    shelf?

Smart people worship God with every
    breath

Our God does not let the righteous
    go hungry

He surely does thwart the craving
    of the wicked

No one in their right minds should want Him
    angry

Heaven, not hell is where you should want a
    ticket

A wise son or daughter brings joy to their
    parents

Regardless of your age, if ignorant, you do
    not care

God want life to be about love, not dollars
    and cents

This is another “Message God Told Me To
    Share”

    Prefer ThisOr ThisFor Our Future

Stop Dying For Satan & Start Living For
    Our Children

    Rather
Lie, Ignore, Contribute To…Instead Of Helping Resolve

    By: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Citizens want the politicians, police, lawyers,
    judge to bring about change

They want these individuals to bring about
    change while they do nothing

Meanwhile too many of us are just being
shot like targets on a firing range

Adults are going backwards and we are not
    offering our children anything

What is so hard to understand about having
to have an education to survive?

Look at yourselves, you do not have any and
you are homeless or close to it

We need to encourage our children to have an
education drive, not a sex drive

Instead of raising children properly these
“so-called” adults have all but quit

    African Americans are so quickly
    disappearing and “niggers” are reappearing

The last things our children need in their
lives are “niggers,” drugs and gangs

Everyday deaths are being broadcasted but
we act as if we have loss our hearing

We can’t seem to see that our enemies are
surrounding us like wolves with fangs

Closing my eyes every night my God shows me
    Angels flying around in Heaven

Opening my eyes every day, Satan shows me
    murderous, pedophiles and robbers

Sad to hear about a mother being stabbed by
her son but even worse at age seven

Children will continue to die and go to
prison until adults come up with answers

How can you set at home or rush home from
work to watch “One Life To Live?”

Those people are just acting, getting rich
and most of their children are in college

Soap-Operas can count on you but to children
you have nothing positive to give

Wake-up Communities, our neglect, let’s stop
    and our children, less acknowledge

You are ignoring those trying to get out the message and
    ignoring our children

Everyone is suffering due to the economy but
    African Americans will suffer longer

We just keep talking about bringing about
change but less stop the talking and begin

Back in the days of Dr. King and even
before, males were Men and so much stronger

Women today knows what it’s going to take
to Save Our Children and there are trying

Men are trying too but the majority is
males and they just refuse to become involved

It appears they think that what makes them
Men is robbing, killing, babies and lying

Males and females, “Rather Lie, Ignore,
    Contribute To…Instead Of Helping Resolve”

    Man…. A Male.. ..
    A Woman….A Female..

Which One Are You? For Our Children’s Sake, Hopefully A MAN or WOMAN!

  • Larome

I must say, NO ONE fears anyone or thing they control ,,and it is mythical to think so…

It’s hilarious to see that a man with an PhD could be so ignorant on racial matter. Dr. Boyce, you are full of racial resentment, apparently much more than the owners you try to label racists, and you are at the same time buying into the capitalist dream of greed. The whole issue here is about money/greed, and it’s amazing that a man like you – claiming such “insight” -  can be totally ignorant of that fact.
I like the NBA (and I am not from the USA but an European) but I couldn’t care less if the players who are already on millions of $$$ earn a few millions more.
And to call a player socially consciouss just because he’s fighting over child custody simply shows you are fishing for point even when there are no points to be made. There are millions of fathers who fight for custudy over kids all over the world, it doesn’t necessary makes them “socially consciouss”.

    the nba is a joke
