Onyango Obama, 67, President Barack Obama‘s uncle, pleaded ‘not guilty’ to a DUI charge stemming from his arrest last month in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Police reports state that his blood-alcohol level was 0.14% — almost double the state’s legal driving limit of 0.08%.
The elder Obama seemed amused at all the media attention and visibly laughed at some points throughout his hearing, according to The Boston Herald. He is scheduled to re-appear in court on November 17 for a pre-trial conference.
The White House has not commented on the incident.
Obama is the half-brother of Barack Obama, Sr. Originally from Kenya, he was initially held without bail by U.S. Immigration officials, due to allegations that was in the United States illegally. He was eventually released with orders to check in consistently with Immigration officials.
This is not the first time that a member of Obama’s family has had issues with Immigration.
Obama’s Aunt Zeituni Onyango, 57, the half-sister of President Obama’s late father, was allowed to stay in the country despite admittedly ignoring a 2004 deportation order and still awaits trail to determine if she will have to return to Kenya.
At the time, then candidate Obama, said that he was unaware that his aunt, mentioned lovingly in his best-selling book, Dreams For My Father, was in the country illegally, and laws covering the situation should be followed.
