Tyrese Kicked Out of Radio Station for Protesting Liquor Stores in Black Neighborhoods

tyrese kicked out of radio station for speaking against liquor stores

WJKS Kiss 101.7 in Delaware has some explaining to do.  The station allegedly decided to remove the actor Tyrese from the building after he spoke on the air about the liquor stores in urban neighborhoods.  Tyrese had appeared on the station to promote his new album, and then spoke about how liquor stores should not be near schools.

“Get them cats out of here,” he said to the DJ.  ”Selling alcohol right across from your kids school, homie — put the pressure on them homie … you knowhow to put pressure on dudes selling in your hood.”

That’s the point when the station manager allegedly came to tell Tyrese to leave the building.  His argument?  Tyrese was “disrespecting” the Delaware community.

Tyrese responded to the incident on Twitter by saying: “I just kicked out of a radio station frm a [program director] who had a problem w/ me speaking on liquor stores that are by elementary schools in Delaware.”

He also said, “If you don’t STAND for something.. You will damn near fall for Anything.”

When I heard about his incident, I found it to be quite curious.  Sooooo, you’re saying that a black man came into your radio station speaking on an issue that was progressive, productive and supportive of the black community, and you put him out of the station for that?  I wouldn’t be surprised if WJKS ended the Tyrese interview by playing a long list of songs about b*tches, hoes, dealing drugs and shooting black men in the head.  As the church lady on Saturday Night Live might say, “How Conveeeeeenient.”

All jokes to the side, the entire Delaware community should take this radio station off of its dial.  We should not tolerate living in a society where black men are rewarded for celebrating ignorance and punished for making intelligent and empowered statements.  In fact, some would say that an intelligent black man is the greatest enemy to corporate America, which makes money by keeping us high, drunk and looking for the next party.  Had Tyrese shown up to the radio station half-drunk, with a mouth full of gold teeth, yelling “Where the liquor at ni**a?”  He likely would have been a hit on the station and invited back for an encore.

A visit to the WJKS website shows that while the station managers find it appalling that Tyrese wants to protect children from the dangers of alcohol, they proudly promote artists like Lil Wayne (who has rapped about shooting little babies, women and grandmothers), R. Kelly (who is known for his “intense appreciation” of underage girls), and Chris Brown (who was convicted of beating a woman two years ago).   Given that the station has a ton of solicitations for potential advertisers on their page, I’m speculating that their need for money is what leads to their willingness to sell the children of Delaware up the river.   Money cannot be the sole justification for almost any activity that takes place in our community – during slavery, others sold us, and now, we simply love to sell ourselves.

The problem  that was faced by Tyrese is common throughout the United States.  I’ve had folks reach out to me from Chicago and Dallas (among other cities), noting that while many suburban communities have no trouble establishing ordinances to keep liquor stores out of their communities, it can often be difficult to get the same opportunities for black neighborhoods (after all, the corporations need some place to sell their liquor and guns, so why not sell them to us?).  One only needs to see the impact of drugs, alcohol and violence up close to realize just how devastating liquor stores and gun shops have been to the African American community.  What’s most interesting is that many of these communities are run by black elected officials who’ve been paid to remain silent about the presence of these atrocious corporate predators.

Tyrese, I’m very proud of you.  I also hope that others who hear about this incident will go out of their way to support you in your decision to take a stand on an issue of relevance to our community.  Unfortunately, too many famous black men are enslaved by the corporate machine and made to believe that ignorance is the key to success.  I argue that the opposite is true for black men….we are brilliant, powerful and as capable as we choose to be.  I’ll be going to see the next Tyrese movie, even if it’s a bad one – I want to see him succeed.

Now let’s go shut down these damn liquor stores, and I’d love to see an end to WJKS.  A new day has arrived in black America, and this kind of behavior is no longer tolerated.

I guess again when it comes to something meaningful no one comments. I guess some of us are too busy looking for BS on the web and then complain why their lives aren’t being fulfilled. I agree, I too will be going out and seeing Tyrees’ next movie because support is a two way street. He supports our community and not just the Black community, but the American community as a whole because everyone is affected when someone succeeds. I think that makes no sense that anyone supports urban heterogeneous of any kind.

    • Rsmith7810

Thanks Eric. My sentiments exactly. We seemed to have plenty to say about that which is inconsequential. I couldn’t agree with Tyrese more.

This is what happens when you disrespect the economic interest of corporations who PROFIT off the Black Community’s demise.

  • Shameful

Let the church say “Amen”! Black folks are rewarded for causing further destruction to our community, in the forms of record deals. But as soon as black folks try to stand up for what is wrong, we try to get silenced. Let us be making a fool of ourselves, and it is all over the news. But let us speak out about corporations and others who are causing destruction in our community, and we are punished. And if they have a law to throw at us, we end up in jail.

  • The Big Picture

The “Powers that Be” knew that musicians and celebrities had a lot of inflluence over their fans. Ever since James Brown did a concert to calm down riots, at the request of the government (if I’m not mistaken). Once the “Powers that Be” knew that these musicians and celebrities could influence us to do good or bad, our music has focused primarily on the negative ever since.

Now you have artists looking at the big picture, because they are more mature. And when they try to use their voice for the progression of black folks, they get the “black-out”. I want to see Tyrese do big things, because I have a new respect for him. Tyler Perry, Tyrese will be needing your help soon. Give him a job!

Well he is right it’s a shame that it is the way it is but until the cycle of iggnorance is broken then it will continue.

  • renay everett

Wow, they kicked him out for that!

  • Awsjr5

It seems that Black radio likes to play gospel music on Sunday, and “do me” music the rest of the week. Sad that a brother who took a stand for something positive got kicked out. The station manager clearly showed his stripes.

There are far more important issues to speak out on but he would need to be careful not to get kicked out of the country!
We have very short memories, so we’ve been informed, and I tend to agree. It was not very long ago when white folks (and some dubious blacks) along with the help of the federal government’s (Me no speak fo black folks) Obama, and a nefariously corrupt Supreme Court allowed Georgia to murder a black man, we can almost be assured was innocent. With issues like that to think of,  liquor stores near schools are the least of our worries and Tyrese speaking out and getting dissed is even lesser.

    • MamasMama

“There are far more important issues to speak out on…”
Why do we have such one-track minds? Black folks act like we have to have one issue agenda and if we speak out about one issue it is done to the detriment of “more important” ones. There are a lot of problems plaguing our commmuity so we are really going to have to learn how to multitask!

I am proud of Tyrese for speaking up about an issue that he felt was important. Most folks go their whole lives without speaking up about anything.

  • Brook

Way to go Tyrese!  We are so proud of you!

    right on brotha, right on!!!!!

  • Ali McBride

Very true Wizard G and I agree, however, the issues that plague our community are wholistic. We have to deal with multiple issues at the same time, multi-task as you will because the bottom line is if it ain’t liquor stores in our communities, or Black men being unjustly accused, there are a plethora of issues that require that more of us get involved and I congratulate Tyrese on his maturity and bravery since he is in an industry where if you do not tow the line, you might find yourself out of work…

Hmm let see what three item have been marketed towards the African American community the most over the last forty years?… Liquor, Fast Food, and Cigarettes. and We love some Henny, Newports, and McDonalds. Hmmm Now what’s a great combination for High Blood Pressure?….Liquor, Fast Food, and Cigarettes. and We love some Henny, Newports, and McDonalds. Hmmm and who leads the nation in High Blood Pressure? African Americans…it’s working people. you are still Amerikkas Most Wanted DEAD!

  • Acnshiningstar

Tyrese was a victim of a limited mindset of one individual.  The gentleman is a beneficiary of the First Ammendment, yet he expelled one who was using that vehicle to do the same?
Tyrese was wrong in his lament though.  What he actually said was, ‘black people are to stupid to control their alcohol consumption.’  In effect,  We aren’t as strong as white people, so we shouldn’t be tempted by something which is beyond our control to resist’.
White neighborhoods also have restrictions as to where liquor stores can be placed.  The white neighborhood in that same city has the same ordinances at that black neighborhood.
Tyrese was just singing that ol negro spiritual from, Spike Lee’s,  ”School Daze”.  It was wrong then, it’s wrong now.

And he is right. Kudos to him for making such a positive statement.

NO LEADERSHIP IN OUR CHURCHES EXCEPT FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF US TO “WAIT”  ON THAT ASSHOLE THEY CALL “JESUS” TO COME SAVE US BECAUSE WE SIMPLY CANT SAVE OURSELVES. I WOULD RATHER PRAY TO TYRESE BEFORE I GO SIT IN THE PEW OF A BUNCH OF PATHETIC BLACK FOLKS AND PREACHERS WAITING TO COLLECT MY MONEY TO SELL ME A SPACE IN THE PROVERBIAL HEAVEN. FOR EVERY 1 TYRESES WHO STANDS UP WE HAVE 99 BLACK LOOSERS IN MUSIC AND IN THE CHURCH WHO ARE CONTENT WITH SITTING DOWN AND DOING NOTHING. THANK YOU TYRESE FOR HAVE A PAIR. BECAUSE NONE OF OUR BLACK LEADERS TODAY HAVE NONE

    • Jp

I don’t see how Jesus has anything to do with this. This issue has nothing to do with the gospel and is clearly a moral and social problem that has been ignored far too long. Tyrese getting kicked out of the station for his statements shows how America fears intelligent black men that aren’t afraid to buck against the idiotic norms of our society. Anytime a black man isn’t a slave to money, corporate America has nightmares.

Now about your anger towards Jesus. Jesus is the perfect example of a man because he himself was responsible, bold, fearless, intelligent, called out the religious leaders enslaved to/motivated by money and other selfish desires, and much more. Also, no one can sell you space in heaven. No amount of money can get you into heaven so don’t take that lie to the head. Giving tithes isn’t about money to fund the preachers bank account or pay for his mansion. Also, God really doesn’t need or want our money, he’s GOD; it is, however, about obedience (Malachi 3:8-11 The Message version). BTW, I’m a Christian and I also agree that more Christians should be vocal and active against social issues.

P.S. I whole heartedly support Tyrese for what he did.

I think Tyrese was right to comment on this, and it is up to the community to do something about it. In the 80′s it was brought out that liquor stores was put into the black area to get more blacks to drink and to forget about current affairs. Back then we fought to have liquor advertisement removed from the community that was everywhere, when compared to white neighborhoods. The fact that the station manager asked him to leave and felt he was insulting the Delaware community shows that his priorities are out of place. Instead he could have used this as a platform to give attention to this matter.

  • JBM

I’m proud of Brother Tyrese. Dr. Boyce was correct when he mentioned the educated Black man being the most dangerous weapon out there. But look what happened when Tyrese tried to use some of his ammo, they jammed him. All of my people need to see Corporate America and most businesses period as enemies of the Black community. I love all people, but when you consciously make an effort to sell poison in our community Black folks, not even collectively, but personally, need to refrain from supporting these types of business because we only hurt ourselves and help the progression of the enemy. Again, Brother Tyrese needs to be commended for his actions. Where the hell are my good Brothers Lebron James, or Wiz Khalifa, or Jay-Z and Michael Jordan on issues like this?  Y’all know the answer… shucking and jiving for their master’s dollar.

The community must speak up when children are in danger. Tyrese did that. Kudos to him.

I AM JUST WANTING TO BELIEVE THAT THE STATION MANAGER was white, but my mind tells me that he is Black and looking after his own interests, MONEY.  This was great of Tyrese, as whites who protest cell towers not being built next to schools don’t get thrown off the air. Right on brother Tyrese!!

” . . . during slavery, others sold us, and now, we simply love to sell ourselves.” That is the best way to describe it Dr. Boyce.

  • Hintons01

Tyrese, I so agree with you, and I noticed that most of the Liquor Stores are owned by races non-black. Sadly designed to rob them of their resources and wealth. False happiness and SAD, til people are too old and caught up in the trap of being broke.

“What’s most interesting is that many of these communities are run by
black elected officials who’ve been paid to remain silent”

That statement sums up the problems in many black communities. We elected a lot of black politicians and because they are BLACK we didn’t feel a need to hold them accountable. The are many ordinances in cities and towns about selling alcohol but they are ignored. Black people were conned into thinking that integration and racial diversity would some how save our communities and give us a voice. All it did was splinter our community. We are so disorganized now we can not accomplish anything meaningful. This story while being covered by a black blog will go ignored by white mainstream media. A media that makes money off of stereotypes of the ignorant uncaring black male.

    • Anonymous

Exactly, voting for them over a qualified white politician JUST because we want to be ruled by fellow blacks is bigoted and foolish.  The one advantage to voting in whites is being able to pull the race card on them when they do something we don’t like.  Can’t do it with a black “leader” when they screw up.  Our only choice then is to take it.

lol its funny how every one forgets his career is widely due to the movie baby boy which was just two hours of stereo types/ porno and he hangs around all those so call rappers who do nothing but bring down the community what probably happen is they had to ask him to leave cause most liquor companies have sponsorships with radio stations

great article, wonderful man but does Tyrese have a last name?  sorry I have not heard of him before, the generation gap I guess.
Please no more articles about models eating their dead husbands though.
the liquor industry along with the movies tv etc. have covered up how dangerous alcohol really is.

Delaware is the registered “home” to most fortune 500s and more businesses nationwide than people in Delaware because this is how it earned its pro business image, at the expense of everyone else. Look at all your credit cards and see where you mail the payments to. Tyrese picked the wrong state to side with children in. Unless the children are incorporated.

Speak on it Ty! Shame on that manager for putting Tyrese out of the station!!!

    PLAYING DESTRUCTIVE GAMES WITH OURSELVES
    By David W. Johnson, Jr.

When will adults wakeup to the dumbness we are doing?
Adults we are just destroying ourselves and our children
Thanks to our neglect, death is what children are pursing
Why, because they have few adults on whom to depend

Adults stop blaming the children and look in the mirror
Gone are the days when communities looked out for all
Now communities drink, drug, rob, kill and live in terror
Instead of helping our children, adults watch them brawl

Schools rec. centers and libraries, closing on a daily bases
You know what’s opening, jails, prisons and liquor stores is
Giving children a few positive but lots of negative places
African American lives these days are more like show biz

A poor little baby’s body placed in a bag and left in a park
Mother charged with murder of child’s body found inside the bag
We abuse our children but run outside soon as our pet dog bark
Tell me, why wouldn’t something like this throw up a red flag

Instead of trying to help some can read this an actually laugh
A worthless father beat, raped and impregnated his daughters
People like that should be jailed and ignored like a rotten shaft
Like pigs and cattle, perverts should be subject the slaughters

Adults, you want positive changes in yours and children’s lives?
Mother and son raped, killed and scaled disabled woman
Parents, children need role-models not drugs, guns and knives
So hard for a woman or child to find an honest and sincere man

Males, stop thinking getting a female pregnant makes you a Man
You are like knickknacks setting on your grandmother’s shelves
Stop falling for our enemies games and get yourself a Real Plan
Right now we are “Playing Destructive Games With Ourselves”

Brother Tyrese’s Message Was Like This Message…Directly From God….We Better Start Listening To God’s Messengers & Not Satan’s Idiots.

Even The Best Of People Are Humiliated And Cursed
    By: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Vindicate me, O Lord, even though I have not led a totally blameless life
One thing I will not do again my Lord, is stop believing in your goodness
Yes Lord, there are times I wanted to shoot or stab evil doers with a knife
I am changing my ways, so that in doing what you want, I can progress

My Lord, to you, I am lifting up my Soul; and in You I trust, O my God
For the sake of your name, O Lord, please forgive me of my iniquities
You can see Lord, instead of reality; too many of us are living a façade
We are having short lived funerals instead of long lived anniversaries

Lord, I want you to instruct me and teach me in the way I should go
My Lord, I prayed and You came to me; and delivered me from fears
Yes, I slip a little but I will get back on Your path, I want You to know
No longer am I willing to just let Satan’s worshippers bring me to tears

I must refrain from anger and turn from wrath and no longer will I fret
It leads only to evil and evil men; I know they will be eventually cut off
Loving you Lord and doing Your deeds, going to Heaven is a sure bet
Many are trying hard to bring back the days on hanging us in a barn loft

Believers must see that the days of the blameless are known to the Lord
The wicked will perish; and Your enemies my Lord will vanish like smoke
Turning our backs on children, elderly, homeless, addicts we cannot afford
Lord, You can see that these devil worshippers act like this is all a joke

My Lord, until You are ready for me, Your Mission I will continue to do
Do not withhold Your Mercy, O Lord; may Your Love and Truth protect me
Many out there trying to hinder me but I have faith You will see me through
Destroying young men, destroys a Race, help me Lord to make adults see

Lord, I am saying, Here I am, I am here to do the Lord’s will until the end
Were it not for Your Love and Mercy, my entire life would be much worse
This day forward, from the goodness of my heart, my Lord you can depend
Lord I know that, “Even The Best Of  People Are Humiliated And Cursed”

    REBUILD THE VILLAGE
    by: David W. Johnson, Jr.

Murderers attending colleges with our children
Murderers walking in our schools off the streets
Just what is it going to take for us to start caring?
Children’s lives are at stake, forget being discreet

Parents get up and walk your children to school
Mothers instead of birth control, parental control
Thanks to not caring, neighborhoods are cesspools
Neighborhoods and our children, we best get a hold

Stop waiting for the police to bring law and order
Live the way we should, police would be elsewhere
Adults are the reason children’s lives are in disorder
What we are doing to our children is beyond unfair

Get children from in front of the televisions, please
To know their future they must first know their past
Watching 53 MTV is not the road to college degrees
52 VH1 is taking them down the wrong road fast

Adults lift you heads and open your eyes to reality
Reality is, our children are gasping for breaths of life
To get it, adults we must develop a better mentality
Come together; take our children from the lowlifes

Show children Black Museums and the Smithsonian
Our children do not know or care about their history
Baltimoreans why should you dislike Washingtonians
Until we stop hating and killing we will never be free

It is our own self-hatred that creates the Don Imus’s
When you are weak, others will surely take advantage
Families, we need to rekindle love, strength and trust

let’s support tyrese’s new book, cd, and movie ventures!!!

  • Jt

I am a white guy, Mostly Irish and part Native American, Slavory was bad, but the mass murder of Indian Villages filled with men, women, children, and babies just for the land was worse, in any regards, consistently talking about it is not going to change the road ahead. I see that a lot of people on here are saying that white America is afraid of an educated black American – this is false, if you are an educated black American living in urban areas with a ton of gun and alcohol stores, then education would teach you that you have to teach everyone of that town to play the game to get what you want – these businesses strive off of money – stop giving them money and they won’t stay – stop electing officials based on color or empty promises. Stop the labels and excuses, if you are legaly in this country, you are an American, start educating everyone that you know about how to play the game – we now live in an electronic, plugged in world, use it to your advantage – did you know that you can create a free website and never pay a single penny, EVER? Did you know that you can create as many as you want? Do you know that blogs and videos filled with collaborative thought, and will power will educate more than going to Farmville on Facebook? There are way too many educated black people out there right now that spend so much time in front of a computer not realizing the power behind it, as well as anybody out there. Keep this in mind – a $50 pair of shoes might help you to walk and teach a  1000 people over time, a FREE website or blog could educate and inspire millions without taking a single step, in the matter of minutes. This white guy supports Tyrese 100% and love his movies.

Great stuff, Ty! You have restored my hope in the survival of BLACK humanity in spite of material success. The rest of them cats all selling booze, and images meant to keep us leaning off of sizzurp and all type of stuff.
