Poll: Majority of Blacks Believe Obama Should Have Spoken for Troy Davis

barack obama and troy davisby Dr. Boyce Watkins

In a recent Your Black World survey, the majority of African American respondents (56.9 percent) believe that President Barack Obama should have spoken on behalf of Troy Davis before his execution last week. Davis was put to death after a pile of questionable evidence emerged over the years showing that there is a very good chance that he did not commit the crime for which he was executed. Former FBI Director Williams Sessions said that the case had too much questionable evidence for the execution to go forward, and prominent figures from around the world, including the Pope, former President Jimmy Carter, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton all fought against Davis’ execution.

Obama did not have anything to do with this!!!This is a State issue not a country issue…If he speaks on this one then he has to speak on the next one and he does not have the power of time to do that…Black people should have been all over this 10, 15, 20 years ago especially the Black citizens in the state of Georgia!!!!!Obama is not some magical genie that is going to make everything alright!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

Obama has “nothing” to do with Black people suffering? Then why did Obama give a speech last night to Black leaders claiming he stands with Black America? Was he lying then? Or now?

Truth: Obama realized that White people were watching, so he hid from the Troy Davis execution like a coward. Worse news? We live in the United States of America…so how can something in a “State” in the USA not concern the President of the United States? So if a State starts executing Black men who aren’t guilty (ethnic cleansing) for its own reasons…a Black President sits by and doesn’t even SAY anything in public?

      Baloney.

      • Anonymous

Exactly! The willing blindness of black people as concerns Obama disgusts me. Thank you. Negro didn’t want to say anything in front of white folks. That’s all to it.

        • Adebayo

Dude, it is still a free country like they say. Feel free to “open your eyes” and willingly support someone else other than President Obama. Afterall you have several choices. Is any black person holding you back? Stop yapping your mouth. Exercise your right.

          • silkie

FREE COUNTRY? Where are you living? Many black foks have died for this country. You want President Obama to stand up for blacks and we cant eve make our children go to school, speak in English, pull their pant s up or keep their clothes on. Speaking of turning over in their graves. We have had blacks fight in wars as far back as the revolution. Let’s get real; when are we going to give our leaders some ammunition. We want them to fight for people who will spit in their  faces, rob their home, rape their kids and kill them. Yeah, right

          • silkie

I do exercise my rights. There is no Blacks holding me back. My eyes have been open a long time and I have fought for many Blacks for many years. You dont know  who I support politically or why. I am talking about a person I have also worked in Police enforcement; I know what goes on in the background. Ithinkthat you nee to get onthe front line and seethe light

        • Altha Cutright

You disgust yourself (BforReal) Your own people put this man to death not Obama if blacks stop being so afraid of whites this world will be a better place.

Boy I know you know the truth no white man willstand toe to toe with a blackman you all only have strength hiding under white sheets and in a group!  You are the ones hiding when you see Black men standing!

        • Anonymous

Another idiot that knows nothing about how tis world works. Just waht did you do te help Troy Davis?!  Not a damn thing!!  But we are quick to bash Obama while we sit around and complain.

      • Altha Cutright

Why don’t you point the finger at the Blacks in Georgia, that sent this man to his death. They got on the witness stand and lied not Obama, this man been on death row for 13yrs and now you think obama should have tried to save his life when the blacks there in Georgia put him to death. Don’t be stupid all your life do something about yourself now, stop pointing a finger in the wrong direction it was not Obama that put him to death it was the blacks there in Georgia.

        • Tony Smith

They say they were victims of police coercion. I guess you have never heard of that before.

          • Sammy

Police Coercion? Well, why didn’t they call the Police’s Bluff, and stand their ground by sticking to the truth? Didn’t Jesus say speak the truth at ALL times, for the truth Shall set you free? So you see, the same ignorant people that may be blaming the President, would have thrown this guy under the bus themselves if pressured.

          • Satyrdean

Yes, I’ve heard of it.  However, as “Altha Cutright” stated, this man was on Death Row for 13 years, Obama has just been in office 2 years.  Where were these same voices during those other 11 years (when there were other–White–Presidents?  You idiots–like the “ONLY SAY NO” Republican members of Congress–are looking for whatever you can to denounce OUR President as incompetent.  And, as has been said, you can always find what you are looking for.  If President Obama had intervened in Mr. Davis’ execution, and not intervened in the Caucasian’s execution during that same time period, all Hell would have broken loose.  “Is this guy prejudice; does he only care about Black Americians, and not other race?  It has been said that, “When GOD is with you, it doesn’t matter who is against you?”.  I’m a firm believer that GOD is with OUR President.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

When Obama hid in the White House like a coward during the last hours of Troy Davis life, as President of the United States, while Black America grieved, that was Obama’s role in killing Troy Davis, point blank.

Who cares if Troy Davis was on death row for 100 years? Our so-called Black president was so scared of what White people might say that he didn’t even SPEAK to Troy Davis or his family about this INJUSTICE.

Don’t be stupid all my life? Why not? It’s working for you.

          • Anonymous

You need to lay blame where it belongs and it’s not with Obama.  Stop hating.  I bet you just sit at home all day on the tax payers dime crying about what Obama didn’t do for your lazy a$$.

        • Anneritad1953

No I think that jury was white!  and I lived in Georgia at the time!  The white cops forced people eo lie on Mr. DSavis that is why they recanted and the white government put him todeath not BLACKS!

Post your degrees on this thread so we can verify their authenticity. Thanks for obliging. I just want to ensure that you attended accredited institutions and not one of those ‘earn your degree in 12 months’ online colleges.  Thanks.

      • Satyrdean

A Caucasian was executed the same day as Troy Davis; should President Obama also have intervened in his fate?  Did any of you ask Presidents Reagan, the Bushes, or Clinton about why they didn’t intervene in the execution of Blacks during their administrations?  Unfairness has been exhibited to our race since where were initially kidnapped and brought to this country over 300 years ago; why, in the hell, is everyone now expecting this President to change laws that only Congress and the Supreme Court can?  And, yea, if you are going to complain–which doesn’t appear you have done–since the “execution” of Dr. King–then form some “lines”, and start marching against those in Congress whose only vocabulary appears to be “NO”.

        • sammy

Excellent comments Satyrdean. The truth is none of these cowards calling for this President’s head everytime he fails to pander to their wims has the balls to lay down their lives total freedom and true quality, none of them. This why law enforcement can continue to assault and kill black men and their actions ruled justifiable, and we do nothing, but complain.
These black anti Obama noise makers are the biggest cowards around. They cannot confront any white authority or white person when injustice occurs. They don’t even grumble being the punks that they are.
Everyone knows what needs to be done in order to earn our freedom, but how many of these loud mouths are prepared to fight and sacrifice themselves to earn it? None of them. They are nothing but talkers.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

A white man who CONFESSED to killing a Black man was executed. Troy Davis was innocent, maintained his innocence from the start and died an innocent man.

I agree with you. Why should any Black person expect Barack Obama to care about what happens to Black people? It’s not like Obama is the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES or anything.

Why do ignorant Obama plantation dwellers make excuses for Obama’s resentment and neglect of Black communities by comparing Obama to White presidents? What’s next? Is an egg a vegetable because they’re both in the same supermarket?

          Get a clue.

No one is making excuses for President Obama they are simply showing the lunacy of your argument. African Americans have been looking for a savior since they killed King, save your damn selves and stop whining. The Congressional Black Caucus members have been in a position of power way before then Senator Obama and now President Obama. Better yet, let us stop begging and do for ourselves. We are the only group that allow people ;like West, Smiley, Watkins, Walters, etc. continue to portray us like victims. Stop trying to make others feel sorry for us and damn it stop seeking people to understand your plight and stop begging. We have not benefited from either and we are perceived by others as a people always with our heads down and our hands out.

      • silkie

President Obama can stand with Blacks and still have no more influence over capital punishment.

      • Tony

you forget to state, i’m a lawyer!  why did you remove your name from the bottom of our post?  lol

      • Anonymous

Can you please get educated on the way the laws work before you give your comment.  Obama should not have said anything!!!

    • Jrotced02

I agree. Black people always want someone else to do what they should be doing themselves. I don’t see anyone black circulating a petition in Georgia to hold a referendum to get the death penalty on the next state-wide ballot. You know why? Because unless you have had someone in your family murdered in cold blood, you can’t know how much pain it is waiting 10-15-20 years for the case to be finally closed. Troy Davis is gone. Nothing we say is ever going to bring him back. Is it easy to say he got what he deserved? No, and if I were on death row, I’d probably be saying the same thing he is saying.

    • Altha Cutright

Dhicks1962 I’m going to copy your statment and give it to a friend I have said the same thing Obama have nothing to do with this. This man been on death row for 13yrs. and no one have said a damn thing in this man defense. What is wrong with Black people they are the one’s that sent him to his death all of  them got up there on the witness stand and flat-out lied all their testimony were lies. After 13yrs now they change their lies who do you think going to believe them after all those years? plain idiot. Now it’s Obama fault he didn’t speak-up for him and this happen way before Obama became President.

      • Gvnn688

Again, stop clumping all Blacks with these knuckleheads.

What happened to the rest of the comments?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4RFIL4BXBAVXQ4LKPNRBJRQBPM None of Your B

The comments were erased because they were TRUE.
It is a disgrace that President Obama didn’t even pick up the phone and SPEAK to Troy Davis in the last hours of the man’s life to offer words of comfort.

There was no “law” against Obama speaking up about this injustice. Obama hid because Obama doesn’t want to make White people angry. Plain and simple. Obama has a big mouth and speaks up for everyone…except Black folks. Why is that?

      • Adebayo

How do you even reason? Is there any brain in your head? When has a sitting President ever picked up a phone to call an inmate convicted of killing a cop minutes before that inmate’s execution. It has never been done anywhere in the World talk less of a place like America. That would have been political suicide for President Obama or any other President.
Let me ask yout this, was this Troy Davis guilty of beating a homeless man over a drink? The allegation was that he and two other men were assaulting a homeless man when the white off duty cop showed up on the scene. Was Troy Davis involved in that incident, and if not, if he was no where around the scene at all, how did he end up in this mess at all? It is ridiculous to look for black leaders to rush to our rescue each time our people place themselves in dicey situations. It is one thing to be truly innocent and not around the scene of a crime or in any way associated with persons of criminal nature. It is quite another to be mingled with nefarious characters with criminal background and with them at a time when a dangerous incident is in progress in which they are involved in. That is not innocense, it is cupability.

Why can our folks not just stay away from trouble, violencem, crimes, and other murky situations? When the consequence comes back to bite, they immoral folks like you seek whom to blame. You are lost, confused, and on your own.

Maybe the President read the 170-something page decision by the federal judge in Georgia and believed that Davis was guilty.

If the blacks in Georgia wasn’t so afraid of WHITES this man would not be dead today. They all got on the witness stand and told bold face lies.

          You are stupid…enough said!

        • BowBow

He sure is Michael.  Thank you for having the courage to speak the truth.  Because some Black people will go buck wild if you just disagree with Obama.  This blind idolization is one of the reasons black people are suffering during the downturn of this economy more than any race in this nation.

If Obama gets a 2nd term, things still won’t change for blacks, actually they are going to get worst.  I look beyond color because I know from which my help comes and it’s not the white house.  So, bring it on.  I can handle it.

          • Adebayo

Maybe you should run for office and become President, so you can rescue black people and correct all the injustice that has been done to blacks. You empty trolls all talk big about courage, but when faced with a situation to demonstrate just an ounce of that courage, you tuck your tail between your legs and run like a punk. Yes, we know your type. All talk when someone else is at the helm of affairs….All talk.

          • BowBow

I knew it, I knew it.  I knew that I would get jumped on and called names.   How disturbing this is.  Maybe one day you will wake up from your sleep.

Another thing.  You don’t know me.  You don’t know what I have had to face in my own life or what I have had to face in being a voice for people who don’t have a voice to speak for themselves..  So, don’t come in here trying to act all self-righteous.

          • Gelon M

I’m being serious here.  Explain what it is you want this president to do for this country or Black people.  I really want to understand where you are coming from, because I believe you have something to say, but people here, including myself, are finding it difficult to understand what that is.  If you care to explain, please do.

          • BlackBeauty

I would love to know the answer to that as well.

This is one of our main issues, waiting around for someone to do something for us! Expecting someone to do something for us!

Again, too many black folks think with their “emotion” and not with solid, critical thinking!

The Troy Davis execution is not a Presidential issue.

Reading some of the foolish comments on  this blog makes me know how backwards some of us are and how we have such a long way to go.

            Very unfortunate!

          • BowBow

Serious.  What did I say that made you come to the conclusion that I was thinking with my emotions?

I am not emotional.  It’s very strange how the very people that accuses others of being emotional are the very ones who are emotional.

I would never get into a debate with any of you on this blog because I know where the debate would end.  You already have your minds made up.  I would be as crazy as a road lizard in trying  to justify anything to you.  Just look at the comments of some of Obama’s supporters on this blog?

            Very unfortunate, indeed.

          • BowBow

Serious, I will not get into a debate with you.  Because I already know where it will lead to.  Some things are just better off left unsaid.

We all have a right to our own opinions.  I am not going to ask you questions as to why you support Obama because your reason is your business and it is your right to choose who you will support and  who you will not support.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MQ5NBJIRRPO5P2F77R6X6QKDGI Symone

Most of you that support Obama can never come up with a reason for your support of him other than the misconception that you feel that a The Half White Obama is A Black man .

I’m all for improvement, because Obama is not perfect (although no one is and no one ever has been).  Who would you propose could do a better job in office?  And how are things going to get worse?  What has the president not done or tried to do that he said he would?  I really want to know what facts you’re basing your opinions on.  I’m talking about numbers and stats too, not opinionated articles like Mr. Watkins’ contrived “survey.”

      • Satyrdean

Fact is, President Obama should be the last one to speak about Capital Punishment after he was instrumental in the  “execution” of Osama Bin Laden.  Not that Bin Laden should not have been held accountable for his part in 911, but because my Bible reads, “Thou Shalt Not Kill”, and “Vengeance is MINE’, and “Forgive 70 x 70″, and “Love Your Enemies”.  How can America, which professes to be a “Christian” nation, support “executions” in any form or fashion [i.e. wars, capital punishments, assassinations, drone attacks, etc.]?

      • Anonymous

He also didn’t pick up the phone and call that racist piece of shit in Texas, who also claimed that he was innocent. • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MQ5NBJIRRPO5P2F77R6X6QKDGI Symone

For all of you that are saying that Obama shouldn’t have intervene as the supposed Black president on the behalf of Troy Davis. You obviously don’t know that Obama did indeed intervene on the behalf on an illegal Mexican in July of 2011.The illegal Mexican was on Death Row in Texas and Obama enlisted the help of The U.N. to try and get the person a stay. The Mexican was guilty of raping and killing a 16 year old girl 16 years ago, there was no question concerning the evidence…..

Those of you that worship Obama overlook everything he does…It’s also clear to me that you are not strong Black men because a strong Black man would never make “politics”a reason not to help another Black man since many of you love to say the Half white Obama is Black.

        • BowBow

To Symone, Some of the comments are missing.  But, that’s okay.   I won’t post on this blog again, because the playing field is not equal.  Many Blessings

Yeah the majority of blacks folks who frequent this site…

  • Jrotced02

You know…lost in the BS of professed innocence is that fact that a policeman lost his life, and Troy Davis was up to his eyelids in  responsibility for it. The same people who claimed he did it, are now saying he didn’t? No DNA evidence? Well, what did you expect…for the perp to kiss his victim? I am disgusted with the black community which allows crime and abuse to run rampant right next door, but take to the streets to destroy their own communities whenever a black person is killed or abused by the police. These same people tolerate gangs, drugs, murders, and rapists, and live in fear in these hell holes, and you can’t even open a small business in the black community without fear of being robbed or burglarized every night, because some dirt-bag third-grade dropout thinks that he’s “entitled” to a percentage of your blood, sweat, and tears. When the whole story about Troy Davis is finally revealed, we will come to realize that he is not so innocent after all, and his life of being a petty criminal, which is being glossed over, finally caught up with him. Do we need a death penalty? You bet we do. We need to have public executions in the communities where these heinous crimes are committed. Instead of an electric chair, we chould have electric benches, so we don’t waste electricity. Instead of lethal injections, we should inject convicted criminals with battery acid, so they can experience some of the pain their victims and loved ones felt. Instead of the gas chamber, maybe we should waterboard them to death. I’ll bet the screams of a man being executed will have a chilling effect on people thinking about murdering someone.

Although I don’t agree with the rest of your statement (ie public executions or even the death penalty), I agree that Troy Davis was most likely not the most innocent of individuals.  At the end of the day, he was running with the wrong crowd and got caught up in some mess that resulted in his death.  Yes, I believe the system is broken and he should not have gotten the death penalty, but I also wish our young men would stop putting themselves in these situations when they know the scales are tipped against them.  As for whether or not President Obama should have spoken out against this, I believe many of our people need to read or reread the constitution, educate themselves on state and federal laws, and look up our government’s system of checks and balances to understand just how much power our president truly has (or rather doesn’t have) on his own.  Anyone with this basic knowledge would have known that any statement from Obama or his administration would have been good for pandering to our collective sense of Black injustice, but ineffective and just plain stupid.

is it just me or did anyone else notice watkins did not state how many people participated in the survey. 56% seems high when you read it, but for example if only 20 people responded, then it’s not so alarming! for watkins to be a phd at a research institution, you would think he would know to state how many people responded…unless it was intentional to continue with his attacks on obama and to further divide the black community.  shame on you watkins!

    • Jrotced02

David-That’s what’s know in statistics, as a sampling error. Watkins, who touts his academic bona fides as a Professor of Economics at Syracuse University, should have disclosed that…but then, his BS agenda and argument would have been exposed.

  • MissyJ

I’m not saying that Obama should have spoken up for Davis just because he was black, I think that he should have done so because there was so much questionable evidence and doubt, this man should have never been killed. If you can’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that some has commited a crime you either have a retrial or dismiss charges and that has nothing to do with race, that’s a right.

    • Gelonm

But he doesn’t have any say in the matter.  He cannot override state decisions as this would not be constitutional.  So him speaking out about it would have been just that: a sad and biased speech that doesn’t need to happen in this political and economic climate where there are many more American lives on the line than Troy Davis’.

  • Fatygirl65

Why should President Obama speak on the execution of Troy Davis when he has no control or influence over the proceedings. Capital punishment is handled within each state of the Union and its Pardon and Parole Board(s). Why give an opinion when your words will not have any clout. He did the appropriate thing. He knows the rules; he is a licensed constitutional law attorney. So black folks, get over yourselves. He can not speak for or represent for us at all times. I’ll bet that he feels the same way we do regarding the execution/ legalized murder of a possible innocent man. Troy Davis knew that his execution represents something much bigger than his case. So my question for Black American and all other Americans: “What are we going to do about Capital Punishment in the country NOW?”  Stop complaining about what others will do. Get up and MOVE!!!!!!!

    • Tony Smith

I resent the notion that if you are criticizing or “complaining” — you are not “moving.” That’s something Obama floated recently. I actually agree that this is a state issue, however. But there is no need to imply that people who are critical of a position are not doing anything.

      • Anneritad

Right!  He is the President of te United STates not Black America and we don’t know what he tried to do behind the scenes and if it was thwarted!

      • Satyrdean

I agree that criticizing “is” moving; your damn “mouth”, and nothing else.  The President is suggesting that we move more than our mouth; let’s move our minds, and our asses.  Let’s get an education and/or vocation.  Caterpillar states that it has 3,000 job openings that are not filled because they can’t find qualified/trained persons.  Why not “move” and train for one of those positions, or something else.  “If you ever want to get on your feet, you must first get off of your ass”

      • Fatygirl65

Tony, I can see that you did not understand what I was referring to. I am not talking about the Troy Davis execution. I’m talking about the poll itself. I’m talking about people who for whatever reason don’t know about state laws and the authority that the POTUS does NOT have. Why are people criticizing, complaining, upset that Obama did not have an opinion?  Anyone who has received a middle school or high school education in this country can tell you that he has no jurisdiction in state executions. The poll was senseless, stupid and intentional in being vindictive. So, when I said stop complaining about what others will do I was referring to people complain about our President’s opinion. There are situations (like Troy Davis’ execution) in which people complain and criticize…they ARE moving. But this poll was NOT an example!!!

  • Altha Cutright

Majority of Blacks do not believe Obama should have spoken for Troy Davis this is a lie. It’s the people in the state of Georgia they are the blame for this man DEATH when they got on the withness stand and told hard-core lies and 13yrs later go back on their word because they are afraid of WHITE FOLKS.

  • Altha Cutright

Dr Boyce Watkins why do you try so hard to put blacks against one-another? are you sure you have a PHD if so, in what field?

    • Satyrdean

      Foolery.  Hater.  Envious. Jealousy.

    • Anneritad1953

Hey don’t play this Blasck on Bloack stuff  while these white fools are traispsing through our conversations!  Doctor Boykin is giving us a opportunity to express our opinions not to pit us against each other!  This is supposed to be blackvoices and you are arguing with whites who violate our websites and try to get their jollies off trying to be hard online cause they are punks off!

So far what I have read from the white posters are spot on. It is your comments against the president that appear foolish.

  • Tony Smith

That’s not a scientific study. I do, however, appreciate the connection to the Gates situation. Both were “state” issues. He couldn’t control that either (Fatygirl65).

  • Jrotced02

I am leaning more and more to the opinion, that Troy Davis was guilty, and this proponents are trying to muddy the issue with half-truths, and not facts. President Obama did not put this man in that situation. Troy Davis and the State of Georgia put him in that situation, along with the people who LIED about what they saw. I’d like to point out that over half the jurors were black, and if any one of them had said NOT GUILTY, Troy Davis would still be alive today. If you don’t like the death penalty, don’t put yourself in that situation. Complaining about it after the fact, makes you look idiotic.

  • Jdag606

Moreover, African American in the Prime time television/media should have spoken up, in addition to and not limited to Oprah, Gayle King, and Wendy Williams, these characters have a propensity to talk about everything else.  Maybe apart of their career movement require that the plight of the majority of African Americans must be excluded from their mainstream conversations and stick with the plight of the white and you will succeed and be successful and alright.  Much success ladies. Troy Davis stated it best when he mentioned to the other blood money takers:  May God have mercy on your souls.

    • BowBow

Wendy Williams is not going to speak out against the execution of Troy Davis, because she is bucking to be the next Oprah.  She is depending on white folks supporting her show.  Don’t believe me, look at her audience now.   The same goes for Oprah and Gayle.  They are all so white washed.

    • silkie

I agree! By the way, what about all of those pastors that reap in the dollars. Bishop Jakes, Morton, notorious Eddie Long, Juanita Bynum. Did any of them have a conference to pray for Troy Davis? Where’s Jessie, Sharpton, Roland Martin?

      • Sbg0718

Al Sharpton gave plenty of publicity to the plight of Mr. Davis on his new show, PoliticsNation on MSNBC, and also was in touch with the State of Georgia demanding justice for him and a stay of execution.  I have no knowledge on what, if anything, the others did or said about it.

Please explain what it is that I must know, in order for me to be called a Black man? Is it calling myself a nigger. Is it wearing my pants down near my knees? Or is it not raising my children properly, in a safe and loving home, and me not getting enough education to be able to get an decent job.

    • Gvnn688

Shame on you.  What an ignorant thing to say.  Don’t you ever say a thing about how a white person may treat you because of the color of your skin because you would be worst than the worst racist.

    • Guest

@Jgreen591 Sounds like you don’t know anything about being black, it’s people like you that are part of the problem instead of the solution. I’m sure your idea of being a black man is to disrespect black women, allow your kids to raise themselves which is why so many land in jail. Your idea of being a hip black man is to walk out on your kids, pay no child support, indulge in all sorts of shady shit, have a garbage mouth, won’t work, always looking to get over on the system or someone. Yeah a real role model for other young black males. Why isn’t there a Phd behind your name? why aren’t you in the White House? We all see very clearly why you’re not !!!!!

President Obama, continue doing your job and let certain people complain as usual.  You have my support.

  • Anonymous

Some of you people are getting more stupid as time goes by. Now the president of the U.S. is supposed to be your protest leader, your lawyer, your father, your momma, and your personal errand boy. What president has ever got involved in the execution of an convicted person, from an sovereign state? You people need to go back to the school that was suppose to educate you, and demand remedial lessons. Obama, was not elected to be Black peoples savior, period. He was elected to govern this entire country, and uphold its laws. You people never complained this much when the white presidents were in office, but you do now. If you think you can get a better deal, vote republican. Then you will see how it is to get really screwed. Wait until your food stamps, health care, subsidized housing, and energy rebate programs are eliminated. Wait until the minimum wage is eliminated, and you are forced to take any job, even those that pay $2.00 an hour, or you won’t be able to receive any assistance. The Troy Davis case was adjudicated in Georgia, and the jurors included Black folk. The case was heard by the parole board, that had at least 2 members that were Black. Why don’t you go to these Black peoples homes, and protest. Why don’t you go to the Congressional Black Congressmen, and protest? President Barack Obama, is as Black as any of you so called Black people. All of us has some white blood ingrained in our heritage, whether you like it or not. You people need to get a life, and not depend on someone else to guide you through your miserable lives. This president, is not your personal savior, nor your personal whipping boy.

    • BowBow

The only thing I agree with in your post is “Obama is not our personal savior”  He’s not anybody’s savior and that is a fact.  He is a puppet just like all of the other presidents were.  The people that really run this country are not in the forefront.  They are not running for office or making speeches. They are the ones that put these politicians in office.

I don’t think anybody is using Obama as a whipping boy.  Remember this is a free country and we are all entitled to our own opinions.  But, it seems that when it comes to President Obama, that is not the case.

      • Anonymous

Where were your comments at when the white presidents were in office, did you come on here or any other site and called them puppets. Yes this is a free country, but not because of some of the ignorant ass Black people that we have in our race. The Irish, Polish, German, Italian, Greek, Spanish, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Chinese, and every other ethnic group, have all came to this country, after us Black folk, but you don’t see them going around disparaging themselves or calling each other demeaning names like nigger, and all of them have created influential and thriving economic communities by depending on themselves. The Black community has been here since the inception of this country, and still has not figured out a way to do the same things, and thus we are the last man on the totem pole. No. Obama is not yours, nor anyone else’s savior, and he is not suppose to be. So stop blaming him for every little thing, that goes wrong in your miserable lives. This president, nor any other president is responsible for your lives, nor any person that finds himself in a criminal situation. Go call your Tavis Smiley, Cornell West, and Dr. Boyce, and see if any one of these race pimps can help you. They certainly weren’t there for Troy Davis.

        • BowBow

Bah, Blah, Blah  Yada, Yada, Yada.  Give me a break!   I can see that you are delusional.  So, I won’t even validate your comment with a response.

          • Gvnn688

As an African American woman I am disgusted and appalled by your comments. Moonhead is absolutely right and is certainly not delusional.  All of his points are valid and that is the reason why you cannot respond.

          • BowBow

And what did I say, disgusted and appalled black woman that would make you feel that way?

What exactly did I say that was so negative about Obama?  It is futile to try to explain myself to people like you because you already have your mind made up.   So there it is in a nutshell.

You have your opinions and I respect them and I have my opinions.

  • Bradecaldwell

Wake up and learn the outs and ends to the Political world. If former President Jimmy Carter and former Republican Congressman Bob Barr could not intervene in Troy Davis faith. Then there was nothing President Obama could have done. He does not have power of the Supreme Court, nor can he over rule the Tenth Amendment of states rights. I feel for Troy Davis, but be informed black people before making uneducated judgements. B. Caldwell Charlotte, NC — We welcome President and Mrs. Obama to Charlotte DNC 2012

  • Morgan M.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaMen!!!!  Moonhead & Bradecaldwell !!!

    Obama 2012 !!

  • Elrancho

My first thought was I hope the President will intervene but then I found out that he has no authority in a state case like this. I wouldn’t be surprised if he would have liked to have spoken out.  But you know, there are so many haters who are against him, it might have back-fired and even have lessened Troy Davis’s chances of reprieve.  As usual for Obama; he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t.

    • Anonymous

Yes, it’s so sad.  Obama can’t seem to get a break.  We want him to intervene on Troys behalf and we are so quick to put him down every chance we get, but when he’s the subject of racist rants and being disrespected we are no where to be found.  Blacks, whites, hispanics..all who voted for him never seem to defend him against these teabaggers/repugs but we want favors from him.  This man stands alone!!!!

  • silkie

I feel that President Obama had one of 2 choices to make. Whether or not he spoke on such a controversial subject, he would have took a beating. Which was the less of 2 evils for him?
I could ask why he didnt comment on my neighbor getting robbed and beaten. Why didnt he comment on the many blacks who died @ WTC but was not mentioned .
I agree that he has not openly addressed many of the black situations in this nation that I feel he should have but, in reality, can he?
I dont think that he has an easy job; especially being the first Black president. The folks are just not going to give him a free ride. Remember, he is not a member of the Good ‘ol Boys club. I want to believe that if he witnessed and had concrete evidence of  alot of what has been hidden in politics, he would blow the whistle.
I have learned to cut him some slack.

  • Cornel Williams

Why should Obama have concerned himself with this matter?  So the witnesses, after 10 years, began to recant their testimony — so?  My point being, who knows if this guy were guilty, or innocent.  He was there at the scene, there is little doubt about that.
There were how many Blacks on that Pardon and Parole Board?  Two — three?  Wasn’t the chairman Black?
Blacks must quit supporting criminality. We must speak out strongly against crime in our communities.  Who can say, with 100% certainty that Davis was innocent?  If so, were you there — did you do it?
For you Blacks like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West that want the President to have some kind of staunch Black agenda, you better wake up,  The black agenda, if that is what you want, starts in the home.
Get involved in your children’s lives, teach them to read, to think, and to be productive.  And if you can’t do that, don’t have kids.  Quit looking for President Obama to solve every Black problem in the world.

    • Qnswmn

YT’s are the biggest criminals on planet earth. Do you speak out against them?

You do realize that Obama is a White man too ,right?

  • Belkin Laster

Guys, stop it with this issue of whether or not President Obama should have spoken on behalf of Troy Davis. For political reasons and this toxic atmosphere of politics, President Obama kept quiet. And I don’t blame him. A heated and very hostile election is coming up next year. The President can’t display even the slightest bit of concern in regards to justice and equality of this case because white liberals and conservatives alike will view him as catering to black people. Nevermind the fact Troy Davis situation was really about the lack of evidence and the fact a person was going to die for the pure sake of cruelty (and racism). We all know the song very well … display any type of sympathy towards black people and suddenly whites start bitching about the President playing the race card and only caring about blacks. Sighs, I don’t care to go on a full fledge attack against President Obama. Black folks should know full damn well he can’t afford to put himself too far out there for us. Is it fair? Hell no, but this is politics and racism in America. I’m not going to look to the President to stop injustices like the Troy Davis case. We have to look to ourselves and fight on a united front to demand change and not for the court and justice system to take lives needlessly. The only way shit like the Troy Davis case will stop is if we make the justice system, the police, and anyone in authority know they cannot and will not devalue our lives for their sorry ass agenda of hate and racism.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MQ5NBJIRRPO5P2F77R6X6QKDGI Symone

What is the point of Obama being the president if he’s so limited when it comes to one race of people and that is Black people? How can he be a good president when he smiles and kisses the butts of every race and even gays but Blacks are shunned,Black people do not deserved such BS….The problem is that many blacks seem to have no problem with being relegated to “no class” status when it comes to Obama and you think every black person should also devalue themselves for Obama or anyone for that matter, well NOT I….Obama is not my savior and he is not anyone special to me.he is just another slick politician.

Obama intervened on the behalf of an Illegal Mexican in July of 2011.The illegal was on Death Row in Texas and was going to be executed for raping and killing a 16 year old. There was no question about his guilt.Obama enlisted the help of The U.N. because they felt the Illegal Mexican should have had a chance to speak with his consulate first,so he certainly did have precedent of intervening in  DeathRow cases.

Obama could have indeed issued Executive Clemency to Troy Davis.

  • Marksallen2800

I guess we can also blame President Obama for when our garbage doesnt get picked up on time too!! We as Black people have to STOP this Blame game and get off our collective butts and FIGHT for what we want ans stop thinking that we can just text and tweet our way through a direct action movement. There was NO massiove campaign from Black media or Black leaders for the President to speak up and when he did, The White House said that The President has Clemecy powers for “Federal” cases and not “state” cases so lets keep up the fight for there are MORE “Troy Davis’” out there!!

  • Cornel Williams

When was the last time that a United States President took a position on a state conducted capital punishment case?  You Blacks are out of your mind. You want some kind of Black Nationalist advocate in the White House.  Should Obama sign some kind of Administrative Order demanding that all Black criminals be released from prison?
Should Obama demand that all Black women whose men have left them (their baby daddy) be guaranteed a monthly income?  Should he sign an executive order demanding that all Blacks be hired by white corporations?  You fools are berserk!  More whites voted for Obama than Blacks.  Should he just abandon them, and exclusively pursue the Tavis Smiley Cornel West “Black Agenda?”  Are you fools out of your mind?
The President is trying to pursue an agenda which benefits blacks, as well as the middle class, and the disadvantaged.  You fools keep this crap up, and some redneck like Rick Perry or some weirdo like Mitt Romney will end up in the Oval Office.  Remember when the last White Man’s President ended up in the Oval Office?  It was George W Bush.  And Blacks were not even acknowledged until the Katrina fiasco happened.
Quit being fools and little whiners.  The :P resident does not just represent Black people.  Black people are their own worst enemy.  Quit looking for a Black God.  He’s the President of the United States, and he’s doing a damn good job!

President Obama. was elected by members of every race, not just Black. In fact, more White people voted for him than Black, so I guess he shouldn’t represent them at all, right? Black people, can’t even elect a Black senator, yet alone a president. Just wait, you will soon get exactly what you deserve, a Tea party president, and you can kiss your food stamps goodbye.

You don’t own this president, any more than when the majority of Black people voted for Clinton, Johnson, Carter, or Kennedy, idiot. He is not the Black people’s president.

      • jenkinsk

Your thinking reminds me of my 3 young children. At every instance they attempt to EXCUSE their bad behavior and poor choices by pointing out their actions are no different compared to their siblings or friends. I quickly remind them they are 100% responsible and accountable for their own actions. Not one of my children like being called out on their BS, but I don’t care. I only care that they learn to become self-sufficient and independent….in words (thinking), and deeds (actions).

The bottom line… the President of the United States of America, Mr. Barak Obama had no legal grounds to do shit for Mr. Davis. If, in fact, Mr. Davis was innocent, the our Justice System failed us as citizens. Yet, at the end of the day, the citizens of the several states and territories are 100% responsible and accountable for ensuring our System of Laws truly serves the people. This is, for god’s sake, a nation for the people and by the people. Unfortunately far too many citizens, regardless of race/ethnicity or gender, exercise our Constitutionally protected right’s.

Lastly..the disfunction in African American communities across America led Mr. Davis down the path of destruction. Albeit a minority, no good bastards in our communities across this nation act with impunity… All of the BS that happens in our neighborhoods is 100% the fault of our people.

Yes, white folk are the root cause of why our people are mentally and spiritually messed up, but we are 100% responsible and accountable for getting our people right. No body should care more about us, than us.. But that is not the case at the moment. If we really gave 2 cents about our own people…we would rid ourselves of miscreants in our communities one way or the other. In closing… the President of the United States needs us, the citizens of the USA, to hold up our end of the bargain. Why? He can’t do shit for us until we decide to do something for ourselves.

Peace and I hope you get your thinking straight…

Qnswmn, are you saying that you want a black president to go into office and treat white people and non-blacks that way white presidents have treated us?  Is it that you really want revenge against whites and you had hoped this president would make white people our slaves?  With this kind of thinking, how can this country ever move forward?  Black people, get over this petty thinking.  We must stop worrying about white people and exacting revenge, and work on ourselves first.  We are no longer victims and we have to power to take our destiny as a people into our own hands.  Obama cannot catapult our people to the top, just as one lone white man did not capture all the slaves and build this country on our ancestors backs.  It’s time to get off our asses, educated our children (IMPORTANT! Do not trust the WHITE SCHOOL SYSTEMS to properly educate our black youth), keep our families together, keep our kids out of the streets and prison, keep them from idolizing social hitmen like Lil’ Wayne and Nikki Minaj, become financially responsible, and the list goes on and on and on.  Stop worrying about Obama, because he’s doing his job as the president.  What he’s not doing and is not going to do is fight for a Black only agenda.  We have to do that for ourselves.

No, you are the fool.  Stop complaining and get off your butt and do something for someone else!!!!

Cornel, the answer is yes. You have some idiots, and that include this lunatic Dr. Boyce, that actually believe that Obama, should issue an order freeing every Black criminal in this country. Some actually do believe that Obama, should issue an order granting them free food and money. These idiots, actually believe that any Black man that is elected, should take care of them for life, and if he doesn’t, then he is not a black man, he is then labeled an uncle tom, and a traitor to Black people.

You are 100% correct but please do not lump the totality of Blacks in with these nuts.

While I find your post insulting, condescending and arrogant in many respects, I agree that the President should not have involved himself in the Troy Davis controversy.  The branch of our government tasked with handling such disputes is the Supreme Court!  If anyone is held accountable for the murder and I do mean murder of Mr. Davis, it is the State of Georgia and the U.S. Supreme Court.  If the President had weighed in on this case, he would be expected to do so on any and all others that people of strong and diverse opinions want him to.  If anyone thinks he can’t get things done now, just imagine what it would be like if he had to add intervening into court cases to his extensive and exhaustive menu!!
I am sickened, appalled, disappointed and disgusted by the state sanctioned murder of a likely innocent man, i.e., Troy Davis.  I signed every petition I could in protest and made phone calls, too.  How many people criticizing the President did anything other than bitch and complain among themselves?  Not very many, I guarantee you!!  I am so SICK of a bunch of do nothing critics!!!

I wonder where Dr. Watkins and others who have expressed such disdain for the President have been all these years regarding Troy Davis?

The man was on death row 20 years!!  Where were you ?

Dr. Watkins needs to be ashamed of himself with his commentaries that are posted for nothing other than to incite black folks.

Unfortunatel Try Davis executed. He is dead. No one will  know if he was guilty or innocent.

Move on to other things of importance!

    • Terresa Vaughn

something is not right about watkins.  what type of black man would write commentaries to incite black people?  a twisted one of course….you know some people get a thrill out starting shit and then sit back laughing at the people who fight.

like someone said, he has a phd and he never stated how many people responded to the survey.

now everyone is on the site attacking one another ignited from the  misleading title to get everyone in a frenzy and oblivious to the research and the game watkins is playing on us for his enjoyment.  he is not a dumb man, there has to be a reason why he omitted how many people participated…could it be there is no research?

People. This guy that goes by the nameNone of Your B, is an White red neck cracker, that is disguising himself as a Black man, in order to garner negative emotions against Obama.

    • Anonymous

      I thought as much!!!

  • Anonymous

A White man, who also claimed that he was innocent, was executed on the same day as Troy Davis, and there was also protesters, including Black activist Dick Gregory, but Obama, didn’t intervene, nor spoke out on his behalf. Why aren’t you bitching about that?

  • JanetL

Dr. Watkins never an opporunity to Bash the first Sitting Black President who, fighting Racism at it’s best trying to get this economy going.

Where was you concern for Other 40+Presidents.

Nothing like another Black Man Setting A Much Higher “Bar” for another Black Man.

Being the Christian that President Obama is he was definitely concerned.  However, he cannot be responsible for commenting on every issue, injustice, racist, backbiting, hating thing or person in this entire country.

You and Tavis and West act as if this President has nothing better to do than to serve at the Pleasure of what you 3 want.

    What a shame.

Many of us prayed for this young man and asked God for mercy and for his Will to be done.

You don’t know the President’s heart and how he handled this very disturbing and very sad situation.

What pole 59% of Black Folk?  Are you kidding us.

What % of the entire Black Population did you Pole, specifically how many Blacks were polled, and using social networking how can you guarantee that these folk were Black

Finally a “Representative Sample of the entire Population of the Black Community would require that you Poll hundred of thousands,  to get an Accurate %

We all know that’s not possible as you only have a few participants on this Blog.

    • Billy Johnson

for watkins to be a phd, it makes you wonder why would he write this without true data!  i can only imagine how watkins would respond to hannity or some tea bagger writing an article like this without giving the number of participants…he would go ape sh**!  to do this to our people…i think watkins is pure evil!

  • JanetL

Finally Dr. Boyce why is it that you Tavis Smiley and Cornell West think that President Obama is responsible for all that ayles Black America?

Had he never become President, you would be doing the Norm SILENT!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_L7ONMGPITX2AX7HEXKFV56TZOU JellyBean

I am just gald that I am among the 43.1% of African Americans who believe that President Obama did the right thing, by not speaking out on the Troy Davis situation. What good would it have done for President Obama to speak out on this matter? He is already in a 12 Round slugfest with the GOP (and some Blue Dog Democrats) over the economy and trying to get jobs for Americans. To throw in an issue, which the Right would have turned into a racial issue, like this matter with Mr. Davis would have been another distraction. President Obama has clearly stated time and time again, these are the things (non-issues) that are important but drain energy from bigger battles.

I am not making light of the Troy Davis situation. It was very sad that it happened. But 20 years..and nobody said anything until a month ago. I happened to watch Al Sharpton show and he mentioned this case, and it was the first that I heard of it. But for some folks to suggest that President Obama should have spoken up about this case, I gotta disagree. President Obama did the right thing by laying low. Making a comment about this case would have been an energy drain and folks know it. The Right wing would have had a field day with this and the CNN/MSNBC/Black news networks would have been silent while the President had to answer question dealing with our messed up prison system rather than the economy.

To be honest, this is what the Grass Roots folks, like the Sharptons (which he does), the Watkins, and the Smiley, folks who have talkshows and radio shows, should be doing. Waking up Americans. Not for the President. He has enough stuff to deal with already. Let others call out the injustice of the penal system.

    Are you FREAKIN’ insane?
I am a black man, and I don’t believe the
President of the United States should concern himself with lowlife rat bastards like Troy Davis.
Troy Davis was tried, and convicted by a jury of his peers.
     The jury has spoken.
The President need to be concerned with the 10.9 unemployment rate, the US economy, housing market, war in Afghanistan, and larger United States issues.
That rat bastard Troy Davis got what was coming to him. By the way, genuis, if you research the case, the EVIDENCE indicates that Troy Davis was the killer.
Individuals that recant statements AFTER a legal trial where they SWORE UNDER OATH to tell the truth, nothing but the truth, so help me GOD…….individuals that recant sworn oaths later
    are IRRELEVANT.
     WHY?
Because if they LIED once, how can we be sure they are not lying now in a recantation.
    Answer that, genuis?
I am not drinking the kool-aid. I am an INDIVIDUAL, an American, and I think for myself.
There is no monolithic black lockstep thought police.
    I am off the plantation.

anytime an innocent man  is accused, being accused, spending time in prison or about to go  on death row for a crime, something should be said by everyone who believes in truth and justice. In such matters there are to be absolutely no boundaries as to  who  should protest BE HE CONGRESSMAN,TRASH MAN OR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES as in the words of Martin Luther King,”we must all be cognizant of the  fact that  injustice against one  is injustice against all” and that we are all a part of an interwoven fabric whereupon the unraveling of any part is the prelude to the unraveling of it all, that fabric being “society” can only be maintained if and when justice is dispensed liberally and  unabated.
All those who stand in disagreement are in danger of finding of themselves victims of an unjust system they  through their own words helped create for today its Troy Davis  but tommorrow it may very well be them.

    • Gelon M

Exactly.  But we are not certain that Troy Davis was innocent just as we are not certain that he was guilty.  The injustice here is a broken criminal justice system that willy-nilly doles out death sentences that are racially and economically biased and without fulfillment of the burden of proof.  Now, there are many issues that would make President Obama’s interference impossible, but let me just make a point of this one:  Let’s say that Obama did speak out against this tragedy (which would not have stopped ANYTHING, I might add), and it was indisputably proven 10 years from now that Davis was actually guilty?  As President of the United States, Obama would need more than speculation that Troy Davis MIGHT be innocent and still be perceived as unbiased. And I totally agree with you and those very powerful and true words of Martin Luther King, Jr.  An injustice to one is an injustice to all, and until we can get rid of the injustice that is our criminal justice system, we must all work as a community to keep our sons and daughters off the streets and out of the hands of those who would see them unfairly punished.

My issue is with Georgia.. because the next day the had mercy on another convicted murder who had no overturned eyewitness reports and who plead guilty to murder…

his name is Samuel Crowe… convicted of murder, confessed his crime, pleaded guilty, placed on death row, instead now serving life.. and he is white…

    Thank you Georgia

I am a black woman and is so happy our President didn’t call or get involved. This man has  to deal with other important issues. IT WAS A STATE ISSUE…now if you read your damn textbook in school you would know that a President SHOULD never interfere with a state issue what president does that. Because we have a black president, he has to jump in every damn black issue…NOT!!!!! Black folks stop whining and start GETTING KIDS PREPARED FOR LIFE…BEFORE THEY END UP IN A TROY DAVIS SITUATION!!! Our children need our help…Troy Davis is dead, its sad and we can’t bring him back…but we can start helping our children succeed in life by picking better associations. My 10 year old lesson out of all of this is your associations have a huge impact on your life. YOU HANG AROUND THUGS this is what can happen!!! REAL recognizes real!!! plain and simple!!!

Although there was not much he could have done, did any of you remember how silent Obama was on Jena 6.  He didn’t bother to make a statement or show up for the march.  However, he did march in Salem in a safe and secure enviorment for it’s anniversary just weeks before.  Don’t get it twisted, now that he is president, don’t even expect anything different.  Let the man’s record on issues that affect the black community speak for itself.  Your vote should not be taken for granted.

Obama is just one man and he sure cannot save every Black person from themselves.  We all must take resposibility for our own action and not sit around and wait on any one man to save us.

Exactly…Obama and The U.N. intervened on a Death Row case in Texas in July of this year. The person on Death Row was an ILLEGAL MEXICAN who was going to be executed by The State of Texas for raping and killing a 16 year old.It sure does seem that he cared about The Mexicans though….

      • BowBow

Thank you Symone,  I really enjoyed reading all of your comments.  What’s going on here has gone beyond Obama’s political support.  It has become idolatry and worshiping.  It’s really scary and disturbing.  That is the reason I refused to debate with them.

In reading some of the comments directed towards me, I am wondering how old some of the posters are, their maturity level, education and life experiences.  But, I digress.  Maybe one day people will wake up from their sleep.  The truth is right before them but, they refuse to see it.  God has given all of us free will to choose.

  • anonn

Well, at least they changed the title to something closer to the truth. It’s still completely bogus to even attempt to point fingers at the President because of something so ridiculous. I don’t know why I even come to this site.
How many of you blabbering that Obama should have “spoken” for Troy Davis even knew who the hell Troy Davis was three weeks ago? You read a few news articles, or more likely, a few Facebook statuses about it and all of the sudden you’re a political activist demanding justice for someone who was convicted by a jury of his peers TWO DECADES AGO.
Have you ever heard of “too little too late?” because that is what I call waiting until a few weeks before someone is scheduled to be executed for a crime before crying out “justice! appeals! retrials! recantation! unfair! racists!” If people really believed he was innocent they should have been raising hell a long, long time ago. But oops, that would require them actually being informed and knowing about the case, following it, and forming their own opinions about something.
It’s like perpetuating stupidity and ignorance is people’s FAVORITE thing to do. wtf?

  • Anonymous

That’s a dumb poll and reinforces the lie that the POTUS can do whatever they want if only they wanted to. It is a state issue and the president cannot get involved in state issues. Some of you pundits are as dumb as rocks and you pass it on to your readers. Teach them.

  • BlackBeauty

Some of you folks need to stop with the fake “emotional” concern about the Troy Davis case.

Before the last few weeks before Mr. Davis was executed most of you did not even know who he was, and had never heard of this case! You have no idea if this man was innocent or guilty!

Stop the stupidity about the President.

No matter who you vote for or support, you are a bunch of over reacting, fake people, who have limited critical thinking skills.

Emotion will not take you very far. Start doing something if you are so outraged!

Unfortunately, Mr. Davis is dead!  Let him rest in peace!
