Poll: Majority of Blacks Believe Obama Should Have Spoken for Troy Davis

Obama has “nothing” to do with Black people suffering? Then why did Obama give a speech last night to Black leaders claiming he stands with Black America? Was he lying then? Or now?

Truth: Obama realized that White people were watching, so he hid from the Troy Davis execution like a coward. Worse news? We live in the United States of America…so how can something in a “State” in the USA not concern the President of the United States? So if a State starts executing Black men who aren’t guilty (ethnic cleansing) for its own reasons…a Black President sits by and doesn’t even SAY anything in public?

I agree. Black people always want someone else to do what they should be doing themselves. I don’t see anyone black circulating a petition in Georgia to hold a referendum to get the death penalty on the next state-wide ballot. You know why? Because unless you have had someone in your family murdered in cold blood, you can’t know how much pain it is waiting 10-15-20 years for the case to be finally closed. Troy Davis is gone. Nothing we say is ever going to bring him back. Is it easy to say he got what he deserved? No, and if I were on death row, I’d probably be saying the same thing he is saying. 

The comments were erased because they were TRUE.
It is a disgrace that President Obama didn’t even pick up the phone and SPEAK to Troy Davis in the last hours of the man’s life to offer words of comfort.

There was no “law” against Obama speaking up about this injustice. Obama hid because Obama doesn’t want to make White people angry. Plain and simple. Obama has a big mouth and speaks up for everyone…except Black folks. Why is that?

Although I don’t agree with the rest of your statement (ie public executions or even the death penalty), I agree that Troy Davis was most likely not the most innocent of individuals.  At the end of the day, he was running with the wrong crowd and got caught up in some mess that resulted in his death.  Yes, I believe the system is broken and he should not have gotten the death penalty, but I also wish our young men would stop putting themselves in these situations when they know the scales are tipped against them.  As for whether or not President Obama should have spoken out against this, I believe many of our people need to read or reread the constitution, educate themselves on state and federal laws, and look up our government’s system of checks and balances to understand just how much power our president truly has (or rather doesn’t have) on his own.  Anyone with this basic knowledge would have known that any statement from Obama or his administration would have been good for pandering to our collective sense of Black injustice, but ineffective and just plain stupid.

But he doesn’t have any say in the matter.  He cannot override state decisions as this would not be constitutional.  So him speaking out about it would have been just that: a sad and biased speech that doesn’t need to happen in this political and economic climate where there are many more American lives on the line than Troy Davis’.

I resent the notion that if you are criticizing or “complaining” — you are not “moving.” That’s something Obama floated recently. I actually agree that this is a state issue, however. But there is no need to imply that people who are critical of a position are not doing anything.

Wendy Williams is not going to speak out against the execution of Troy Davis, because she is bucking to be the next Oprah.  She is depending on white folks supporting her show.  Don’t believe me, look at her audience now.   The same goes for Oprah and Gayle.  They are all so white washed.

Please explain what it is that I must know, in order for me to be called a Black man? Is it calling myself a nigger. Is it wearing my pants down near my knees? Or is it not raising my children properly, in a safe and loving home, and me not getting enough education to be able to get an decent job.

The only thing I agree with in your post is “Obama is not our personal savior”  He’s not anybody’s savior and that is a fact.  He is a puppet just like all of the other presidents were.  The people that really run this country are not in the forefront.  They are not running for office or making speeches. They are the ones that put these politicians in office. 

I don’t think anybody is using Obama as a whipping boy.  Remember this is a free country and we are all entitled to our own opinions.  But, it seems that when it comes to President Obama, that is not the case.

Cornel, the answer is yes. You have some idiots, and that include this lunatic Dr. Boyce, that actually believe that Obama, should issue an order freeing every Black criminal in this country. Some actually do believe that Obama, should issue an order granting them free food and money. While I find your post insulting, condescending and arrogant in many respects, I agree that the President should not have involved himself in the Troy Davis controversy.  The branch of our government tasked with handling such disputes is the Supreme Court!  If anyone is held accountable for the murder and I do mean murder of Mr. Davis, it is the State of Georgia and the U.S. Supreme Court.  If the President had weighed in on this case, he would be expected to do so on any and all others that people of strong and diverse opinions want him to.  If anyone thinks he can’t get things done now, just imagine what it would be like if he had to add intervening into court cases to his extensive and exhaustive menu!!

Exactly.  But we are not certain that Troy Davis was innocent just as we are not certain that he was guilty.  The injustice here is a broken criminal justice system that willy-nilly doles out death sentences that are racially and economically biased and without fulfillment of the burden of proof.  Now, there are many issues that would make President Obama’s interference impossible, but let me just make a point of this one:  Let’s say that Obama did speak out against this tragedy (which would not have stopped ANYTHING, I might add), and it was indisputably proven 10 years from now that Davis was actually guilty?  As President of the United States, Obama would need more than speculation that Troy Davis MIGHT be innocent and still be perceived as unbiased. And I totally agree with you and those very powerful and true words of Martin Luther King, Jr.  An injustice to one is an injustice to all, and until we can get rid of the injustice that is our criminal justice system, we must all work as a community to keep our sons and daughters off the streets and out of the hands of those who would see them unfairly punished.
