Your Black World Reports:
The United States Supreme Court has temporarily delayed the execution of Troy Davis while they review his case.
Davis’ defense team took their case to the Supreme Court an hour before the execution, as police in riot gear prepared to wage battle on the protestors holding signs and singing “We Shall Overcome” outside of the Jackson, Georgia prison.
Officials report that Troy Davis spent 6 hours with his family today — from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. — and after refusing his last meal, was given the “prison standard” of cheeseburger, baked beans and potatoes.
No word yet on the US Supreme Court’s reasons for delay or what evidence they are considering, but the state of Georgia has made it clear that this is just a courtesy, and that they are well within their rights to kill Troy Davis at any time.
Earlier this afternoon, the Georgia Supreme Court denied a last minute request by Davis’ defense team to stay the execution, giving the green-light for his sanctioned murder. No physical evidence exists against Davis and 7 of 9 eye-witnesses have recanted their testimony, 3 of them claiming to have been coerced by the police.
The family of police officer Mark MacPhail continue to wait in the witness chamber for Troy Davis to die by lethal injection. They say they are not thirsty for blood, but for justice.
The warrant for Davis’ execution is valid until Sept. 28.
