An Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center officer has been placed on administrative leave without pay following the death of an inmate last week. The county has declined to release the officer’s name.
According to investigators, Matthew Green, 58, of Columbia, South Carolina was arrested Aug. 23 by the Forest Acres Police department at approximately 11:18 p.m. on charges of public intoxication.
During the booking process, Green was put into a headlock by an unidentified officer in an attempt to restrain him, according to sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Curtis Wilson. Shortly after midnight Green was found in his cell unresponsive by detention officers and was transported to a local hospital Wednesday where he died.
A Surveillance video shows the unnamed officer patting down Green before placing him into the headlock that contributed to his death.
After Richland County Coroner, Gary Watts, determined Green died of blunt-force trauma to his neck, the Sheriff’s Department opened an investigation. The jail also is also launching its own inquiry into the incident. Once the sheriff’s investigation is concluded, the results will be sent to Dan Johnson, the 5th Circuit Solicitor, who will decide whether to prosecute.
