Michael Fauntroy: In Defense of Cornel West and Tavis Smiley

michael fauntroy defends Cornel West and Tavis Smiley

Update: Steve Harvey calls Cornel West and Tavis Smiley Uncle Toms

I am friends with Tavis Smiley and Cornel West, so it has been hard for me to watch and hear the often nasty attacks leveled at them both. While no person is above criticism, and I would not have used some of their words, much of what I’m hearing about them just leaves me shaking my head in wonder about where we are going as a nation that has so many needs. The Smiley and West “poverty tour” has presented their critics with another opportunity to accuse them of everything from grandstanding to undermining President Barack Obama. That is nonsense and reveals a more significant truth with which we all must deal: some people so hate the messenger that they can not accept the message no matter how important it may be. It has gotten to a point where their critics seem to be saying “if Smiley and West are for it, then I am against it.”
Who can reasonably argue against greater governmental action on poverty or leveling the economic playing field for all Americans? Who really believes it is a bad idea to call attention to the millions of people now living near or below the poverty line? And we can afford to be picky about which public figures spend their time trying to draw attention to this crisis? Really? Consider this. According to the U.S. Census Bureau more than 45 million Americans live in poverty.  Imagine a state the combined size of California and Virginia in which every person lived in poverty. Wouldn’t that warrant attention? Also, more than 20 percent of American children live in poverty and 2009 saw the largest single year increase in the U.S. poverty rate since the U.S. government began calculating poverty data in 1959. America now has record numbers of food stamps recipients and nearly 17 percent of Americans are now participating in at least one anti-poverty program. And, oh by the way, it is not like living just above the poverty line means you are fine.

I am not hearing very much talk about this from our media, particularly among Black hosts and political leaders. I know some are but we hear more talk about how Tavis hates the President than what should be done about poverty (I guess talking about negativity is more interesting). So when are we supposed to raise a fuss about this situation, after President Obama leaves office? When congressional Democrats get some backbone or their Republican counterparts get some compassion? If not now, when?

Tavis and Cornel have been criticized on a number of fronts. One criticism I hear often is that they focus too much on President Obama. I have never discussed this with either of them, but I think there are at least three reasons for focusing on a President. First, when a President speaks on an issue, it is instantly legitimized and congressional allies are emboldened to push legislation. Conversely, when a President is largely silent on an issue one would expect him to push, it is seen by his political opponents as indifference so they can continue to ignore the issue. Second, congressional Republicans could not care less about poor people, poverty, and anything else that relates to the downtrodden. They just pushed a debt deal that will cut funding for many of the lifeline social programs that are now overflowing with people in need. They have a “blame the victim” mentality about poor people which makes it easier to demonize and marginalize them. I do not think it is a stretch to say most congressional Republicans believe people are poor because they are lazy. They see poor people as low wage grist for the mill of American capitalism and disposable beings unworthy of dignified consideration. Poor people will find no help among the Republicans in Congress, which brings us to the third reason. Senator Barack Obama ran on the theme of change. His compelling personal story and charisma presented America with a real opportunity to move in a new direction, one that would make a difference for everyone. Given the choice, where would you focus your attention?

I know the President has to dance with the Republicans but I believe he has spent too much time trying to curry favor with people who hate him and are actively trying to make him fail. Tavis Smiley and Cornel West are not among those people. They do not hate the President. They do not want him to fail. They see the enormous potential for change President Obama represents and want him to live up to it. They are not just happy that we have a Black President. And I am glad they are calling attention to such a critical issue as poverty. And to their critics: don’t let your dislike of them lead you to turn away from the importance of their message.

Who is paying for this “Poverty Tour”?

Whatever the cost I am sure those monies could be better used by giving it directly to the poor!

I feel that Mr Fauntroy is nieve and biased about his so-called friends and their mission.  Thru out recent history, white people love to see blacks against blacks.  I get so tired of hearing so many people putting down others and not doing or offering any real solutions themselves.  It seems pretty clear to me that Tavis and Cornel have a hidden agenda.  I commend our president for taking on an impossible task.  The elders I grew-up with used to say “if you don’t have something constructive to say then shut-up!”.

There are none so blind ass those that will not see!!

FInally a strong voice of reason. How could black folks who suffer from poverty disproportionately have so much hate toward these men who want to bring a spotlight on the issue? We have become such mindless zombies when it comes to our blind support of the president. So much so that we send the cyber hate mob out to attack anyone they think is critical of Obama. AL Sharpton, Tom Joyner, Warren Ballentine, Steve Harvey, George Curry and all the others should be ashamed of themselves for igniting this lench mob with their hateful attacks. And the sad thing is we are so much in this group think mentality that we join in without ever thinking about what we’re fighting against.

Who in their right mind would oppose the efforts of these two men with such venom when the outcome could only mean a better life for poor folks. But we chose to villify the messengers. They told you from jump that the AARP was helping to fund this tour, but folks keep asking who is giving them money just to make it sound like they are up to something fishy. And I have never heard either one of them say they hated the president or wished him any harm or failure. This is something we’ve conjured up in our minds because someone told us to think that way.

All these radio guys get invited to all the big social events and get to hang out with the president and they’ll brag about it on their shows while the masses of the people suffer. They don’t care about you. They are elitist and bought by the WH to spread propaganda. We really need to start listening and thinking for ourselves.

What makes it worst is that Fobama will never do anything for blacks period. He can’t.The white elite have him being their bitch.Black people need to start creating their own economies and own currency. The whites will not help us period.

And the fighting continues, we cant agree on anything, we all need to be on one accord and stop all the name calling and  back biting. together we stand  divided we fall.
Why cant we all help each other, bring each other up, love each other. most  people look at this and like it because as long as we fight we can never get anything accomplished, God Bless us we need it!

Very thoughtful counterpoint to this divisive issue.  One must critically think about
the quagmire we find ourselves in while wanting the President to succeed but seriously thinking about some of the choices he has made.  This entails his cabinet.  He and the democrats had some leverage upon beginning his term only to give so much away and frame it as compromise and non-partisanship were disconcerting to many supporters.

To relegate what Tavis Smiley and Cornel West are doing as “revenge” for some social and personal slights begs the issues at hand.  I think what keeps many of us from going full throttle on these issues is the vitriolic and racist attacks this President and his family has
received with a total disrespect for the office.  Bush naysayers didn’t go this far and he
led us into a bogus war and diminished the surplus budget Clinton left at poor people’s expense especially the children.

What we must remember is that President Obama is a politician and not our savior!!

The POTUS isn’t the one calling himself a Savior, that’s the Republican Party that calls him that. The POTUS knows that if he messes up the whold world will hate him for it.

Thank you for this.  I see nothing wrong with either gentlemen speaking on an issue that is deeply reflected in their own community.

What it seems to me is that rich black people like Steve Harvey are telling other more conscious rich black peole to shut up and enjoy their money.  “Everything is fine in America”…(at least for them).

I understand that Mr. Fauntry is a dear friend of Tavis Smiley and Cornel West.  The problem with some friends is they are afraid to tell their “friends” the truth.  Tavis and West may not hate the President but based on their petty laments, you can’t help but wonder their objectives.  Poverty among black people is not some new phenomenon.  This has been an issue for years and should have been strongly voiced and fought before Obama became President.   I believe West, Travis, the so-called “highly educated” are just as accountable because they too have enormous potential for change!  It takes a village!  If they are really concerned about the plight of African Americans then they should get together and start teaching black folks the one thing they haven’t grasped and that’s unification which West and Travis are poor examples.  Now they want to go on field trips and propagate their crab-in-the-barrel message.  Its always those looking from the outside that have so much to say about the inside and have no clue what it takes.  If West and Travis have all the answers then they should’ve run for President.   So what they called attention to ”such a critical issue as poverty.”   Okay, we get it, you have a mouth and know how to use it.  Let’s see you roll up your sleeve and see what you can do with your hands.  I don’t dislike West or Travis, just extremely disappointed.

If Cornel and Tavis want to help our people so bad maybe they SHOULD go and help the POTUS. Right now a so called comic named Felonius Munk used Travis and Cornel as cover to dis the POTUS. His You Tube was picked up by several white racist websites including Glenn Beck’s The Blaze. Republiklans are now prasing Tavis and Cornel because of their new friend Munk aka “The New Sambo”.The man cursed out the POTUS and blame and his policies but praises white supremist.

When we air our dirty laundry, who wins? This fight will do nothing to advance our agenda, but does everything to obfuscate what is important to our community. Dr. West, Mr. Smiley, and Mr. Harvey are wrong to publicly criticze, it makes us look weak and unorganized. We can discuss that which we disagree on,but must attack as an united front. There is no winner in this discourse, our community is the loser.

I am right with you…It saddens me to hear AA people have such mistrust and judgement toward Dr. West (in particular) and Tavis Smiley.  What I hear from people is that they (dr west and tavis) are both grandstanding and using their critique of Pres. Obama as a platform for self gain; this is dr. west and tavis’ deepest motivation.  I fundamentally don’t believe that. I listen to them regularly, and they are consistent and welcome feedback.  My sense is that theses people don’t really listen to them (on smiley and west) enough to know them. I think corn and tavis get bad press in the black community, and I think people get a few sound bites and don’t like what they hear….. .Sure they have gained some notoriety and success—- on their own merit, but not because of Pres. Obama.

I hear afroAmerican’s heartbreak about more division within their own race (not a small pain..), but I admire Dr. West and Tavis for taking the heat of going against the grain, and not towing the expected AA stance….. I listen to them weekly, and they might be snowing me, but I haven’t heard any inconsistencies….they have a consistent love and respect for people of all colors and genders….they are for human rights not just black rights, and that speaks to my heart……I wonder what Dr. King would say about them?………patricia, chapel hill, nc
