What creators meant for a joke was majorly offensive for music artist Miguel and the LGBT community. Wednesday morning, a major New York radio station called “The Breakfast Club” on 105.1 FM played a homophobic parody of Miguel’s song “Sure Thing.” NewsOne reports that the lyrics were changed from “You can bet that, you don’t have to sweat that” to “You can bet that, Miguel wants your butt crack,” followed by a voice saying “n*** you’re gay.” It is believed that this parody was created in part because of the recent questioning of Miguel’s sexuality due to his choice of dress.
NewsOne also reports that “the Human Rights Campaign, one of the top LGBT civil rights organizations in the country, released a statement to NewsOne condemning the radio station’s remarks [saying] there’s nothing humorous about homophobia.” Their Deputy Press Secretary Paul Guequierre added:
“When young people who might be struggling with their identity listen to the radio, they shouldn’t hear a dangerous message of hate. Radio stations have a responsibility instead to send a message that embraces everyone for who they are.”
While the Human Rights Campaign takes care of that, Miguel made a point of addressing the rumors concerning his sexuality. He released a public statement saying, “For anyone who questions my sexuality, the honest truth is I love women. I’ve always openly loved women.”
