Percentage of Employed Black Men Is Lowest It’s Been in 40 Years

IN MEMPHIS — His week had begun with a graduation ceremony, a standing ovation and a walk across the stage to meet the president of the United States. Kenneth Roberson was a top-ranked student at the high school President Obama had selected as the country’s most “inspiring,” and the president had extended his hand and asked Roberson what he planned to do next. The 18-year-old thought back to his mother’s advice about making first impressions: Stand tall. Make eye contact. Smile. Be confident.

“Sir, I’m going to get a job and go to college,” Roberson told the president.

Now it was Friday afternoon, four days later, and Roberson idled with a group of fellow graduates in the empty parking lot of Booker T. Washington High, a public school surrounded by the housing projects of South Memphis. The president was gone. The commemorative banner had been packed away into storage. A school security guard had locked the main entrance. All that was left were the littered remains of green-and-white confetti on the asphalt and a shared uncertainty about what to do next.

“I need a damn job, man,” said Chris Dean, 18. “Any of y’all got something?”

“Nah,” said one.

“Nah,” said another.

“I’m still trying to get hooked up at McDonald’s,” said a third.

The group turned to Roberson, who had always been the first of his friends to get everything. He had graduated in the top five in the class and won a partial scholarship to college. He hoped to earn at least $2,000 over the summer to pay for school and buy a car that would get him there. But now, in the parking lot, he was another teenager shaking his head.

If our young Black men don’t start going to school and graduating, that percentage will certainly will go lower.

The magic 40.  I am sure by design.  Are you sure we aren’t the wilderness children?

  • Howie1

This is a sad reality because the rich made more profits with less expenses in the last 4 years.
Mental and economic slavery is the name of the game. Dr. Boyce I thank you for bringing this to the forefront. we dont ask for handouts, we ask for jobs.  A blind man can see the mental control the rich and unscrupulous has over us. work hard and make them million for their swis bank account and china investments………………

And you want President Obama to do what?  Beat the corporations and businesses who hire people over the head?  Beat the republican obstruction party of no into passing legislation that will create jobs?  Let’s hear your solutions instead of your bitching…

Hey poor folks and black youth are YOU REGISTERED TO VOTE?  If you are registered to vote, DO YOU VOTE?

    • Colonel Sixx

      Good point MGJ.

      Colonel Sixx

    • Thom529

The issues are much more serious than merely casting a vote. We as a people are regressing. The work doesn’t stop and start at election time. We have to continue to communicate and come together as one; poor, middle class, rich, educated and black youth.

  • Colonel Sixx

    Colonel Sixx

This is beyond a damn shame. This could become a very dangerous situation.

Priorities needs readjusting desperately, the need to succeed has almost died within the black community. I think alot of blacks settle, and lack developing and implementing future plans. Education should always be of first priority, not sports or Rapping or any other get rich scheme. The concepts of being successful also has to start from the home and environmental settings, then schools. I’ve grown tired of hearing parent state that ”I can’t do nothing with him/her at the age of 12-15″ not only it this embarrassing but highly unacceptable.

  • http://profiles.google.com/greeneink Renee Greene

It is intentional. There are thousands of jobs, LITERALLY, out here that are available and open and white folks are still holding the control paddles.

They are lashing out in anger at black people, and that includes black women, who can’t find work. It’s their “payback” for Obama getting elected in the first place; and it was a majority of whites who got him elected. I grew up in a world filled with racial and gender discrimination, which has not gone away; and now that has been “layered up” with ageism, and looks-ism. There are white females out here, be they the daughters, relatives, cousins, wives, lovers, or eff-buddies of the white male owners of the majority of most of these companies, who are turning me down for jobs. And they are 20-30 years my junior; plenty of whom have no work experience, and have not even GONE to college, let alone graduated.

It’s not a coincidence, it’s not a recession – that was long over. It’s intentional. You won’t see it pick up again until Black people pick up and do something themselves, or until Obama is out of office.

Education! Education! more Education.  We need to get off the blame train we are NOT about our business of preparing our young men to succeed.  You can’t blame anybody else for us not emphasizing EDUCATION as a very, very important part of our culture to be successful.  We have to quit making excuses for the mistakes we are making in putting out generations of young Black men who are ill-equipped to pass any kind of academic test.  We have no one to blame but ourselves as a Black people and as a Black culture.  We need to do the things that we can do to help ourselves!  We need to stop whining, crying, blaming and making excuses.  THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE CAN AND NEED TO DO TO HELP OURSELVES!

      • Yepme2

It must be boring reading your response relating to Education and this factual statement,”We need to stop whining, crying, blaming and making excuses.”  You will not get many responses because you are stating facts and and that doesn’t sit well with many; it cuts off their whining opportunities.

Thanks for stating what needed to be said, excellent post.

ALL men are not working, not just black men!

Other races are suffering as well.

Of course we are on the bottom rung in employment because we were not high on the ladder in the first place!

During these times one must prepare for their financial future. Become educated (it is free!), and especially if you are low income/poor. Perfect a skill that only you can do well, investigate other opportunities and ways to earn monies to take care of yourself.

I see the Mexicans out selling fruits, flowers, vegetables, socks and whatever all day long. They band together, pool their resources, and then buy property, open businesses, and they do it by doing hard work, and any job that is legal.

I never see one black man doing any of this!

Sitting around bitching, and  reading blogs like this writer, Dr. Watkins seems to like to put out here to “rile up the negros” does nothing to help the situation.

The president can’t secure your future!

No one can secure your future except yourself!

Use this down time to prepare yourself for when things turn around, and it will!

Living under a system of white rule and domination, we will always have issues..You are repeating the whitemans mantra, about pulling ourselves up by the boot strap..The only boot strap we’ll be pulling up, is marching into these wars started by the white man for his greed and to control the wealth of the majority peoples of color, while most of us will be coming back, if we come back, injured, no access to the VA  medical system, dishonorable discharges so they will not have to pay these soldiers any benefits, etc and the lists goes on..The white man has been playing his game, it’s time we play ours and not think we can out play him at something he madeup…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

Nothing new..We cant expect the enemy to hire us to work in their businesses..Look at the Asians and Latinos, they intergrate into the finances and dont worry about social intergration..They hire their own and no one bothers them about hiring whitey or blackie to work in their businesses..Black folks are the only ones always worrying about getting along with everyone, while others only care about getting our money, and could give a damn about us..Time to get back to what Marcus Garvey & Hon Elijah Muhammad was telling us to go over sixty years ago, do for self and put all these roaches who have infested our communities with their cheap businesses, disrespectful behavior, and no support for anything in our cmmunities, out of business…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Edward-Stevens/100001667334316 Edward Stevens

To @Iceblue200404: you are totally correct.  We as a Black culture have our priorities messed up.  Education! Education! Education! Education is the key to keep a lot of us from falling through the cracks in the proverbial economic net.  When are we as a Black people going to get that in our heads!  And we wonder why the Asians, Indians and all the other races who come here to be educated are passing us by!  We sit here scratching our heads wondering why our young Black men are not succeeding other than succeeding to the next prison! Duh!  We have to change our mindset and our way of thinking!  We will always be sitting on the sidelines whining racism, the white man and every other race got us unless we get up off our behinds and be about our business of taking care of our business.  The solution is within ourselves!

    • Yepme2

You are correct again, my question, when are we going to start discussing resolve, exchange ideas and communicate with those that have viable plans?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Edward-Stevens/100001667334316 Edward Stevens

What a question!  That is the Question!  It can start now if we all get on one accord of one mind.

        • Yepme2

My mind is focussed on generating revenue to support and sustain methods of Education and establishing businesses, which employs and empower community members.  This has to be done within our mind energy and resources and it can be done when we start connecting.  I have plans, if there is an interest.

Education only if we’re teaching ourselves and not being taugt by or dependent on the white man to teach us..Do you think he’s going to teach us to outshine and out compete his children? We keep running aroung on this carousel trying to find a different exit, when it has always been staring us in the face..The white man and woman will never teach anyone to take food out their mouth, know more than they know, and to rule them..We will have to learn to do for self, teach our own and stop this damn intergation BS that whitey by way of the jews, brough to the black community only..The only thing you should be intergrating might be your coffee, or tea..But notice we’re the only ones who add milk, while whitey drinks his black…As Malcolm said about intergrating milk into your beverages “what used to be strong is now weak, what used to keep you awake, will now put you to sleep”..This is the same for having whitey part of any black organization, it will become diluted and will not do anything for black people..We only have to look at the NAACP, Urban League, SCLC, SNIC..They were all watered down by whitey..Do your reasearch and see who really funded these organization and their motive behind funding them…

  • AntBee

Shakka Zulu, Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!  The so called “enemy” has been hiring “us” to work in their businesses for generations!  Your fore-fathers worked in their businesses!

What we need to do is to become educated as a whole.

No need to have resentment for the other races of people who take advantage of those old store fronts that have been sitting in the community for decades, and turned them into businesses. Black folk could have done the same thing! Again, those people work hard!  They live 2-3 families in one room (over that store) to become successful and educated their children!

We need to place the blam where it should be and that is on us!

Education is the key to freedom!!

    • Yepme2

We are the enemy in our midst!

    • AntBee

“We are the enemy in our midst!”

      Absolutely right Mr. Stevens!

Until we realize that it is mostly US who is preventing our progress as a whole we will continue on the same negative path, decade after decade.

You would think by now that some of us would WAKE UP!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

The white man has done a superb job on some of you negros..Yes we have problems in our communities, but until we trace it back to the original source and address it, we will continue to blame each other for problems started by whitey to confuse those already confused..When Aians come into a community they are there strickly for the economics, nothing else..The same for the Latinos, Jews, and all the other ethnic groups that comes into our communities..These people are given interest free loan like the Arabs, Indians, and East Africans to open busineses by the same whitey that are telling us we’re not good enough..Who owns the 7 elevens, franchise hotels, parking lots, etc? This is the divide and conquor strategy that whitey have employed for the past 2K years to dessiminate the rest of the world..They will advance a few of us, which will make the rest of us mad, envious, and want to tear that person apart and not look at whitey for what he has done..The ole bate and switch game that we have been falling for…

You keep saying education..There are more people educated in street corner pharmacology, that you could get in any damn ivy league institutions..They know how to mix the drugs, divide the portions, and how much each batch will bring in, all without using any damn bookkeeper or computers..We started the numbers game in our communities in the 20′s that whitey came in, took over and it’s now called the lottery..We tell our children to go to these schools who train them to work for whitey and not to think for themselves…Why the hell should they go to school except if they plan on becoming a doctor, lawyer, dentist? We’re buying into this comsumerism that tells us to go to colleges/universities when you’re only their to bring in money to keep these institutions fuctiong in their ponzi scheme…More college presidents and professors are making seven figure salaries for doing what? Who is paying these salaries? It comes from the high tuition and wasted cources being taught these children, mostly black and brown..There are more people coming out of school now graduating magna cum laude, and dont have a damn job waiting for them..If whitey can find jobs for his own peope, what makes you think he will have jobs for us?

The children in Asia, Europe and africa are going to school year round six days a week..What they are getting in high school, you have to pay to be taught in colleges in the US..I know because I was taught in those school systems and when I came back to the US, I skipped two grades graduating HS at fifteen..

        • AntBee

Yes, the white man will teach us what he teaches his children IF we will take advantage of it just as our ancestors took advantage of every opportunity to learn the alphabet, and to read even though he had to keep it hidden from racist whites.

No matter,  they still knew enough to get the knowledge because they knew it would prove to move them forward, which it did!

          You sound like a fool!

Go back and read the final analysis of Malcolm and his thought process, and maybe YOU will learn something.

As for your attempt to degrade, please know that it is YOU who is the real negro, and it is negros with your foolish, backward, limited mentality that we can no longer afford.

          WAKE UP!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

You’re the one who sounds like a european jackass negro…We invented the damn alphabet..The Mdu Ntr or pyramid script produced the Greek script, and from that came the Roman script, which produced the language we’re speaking and writing in, you integrationist negro..Negros like you who are always hanging or crawling back to the plantation for whitey dirty drawers are the ones holding back the rest of black people..Intergration is only good for coffee and tea..The white man must have given you one of his women and or men, he did not have a need for..Take them with you and crawl back to the plantation sambo..Take Clarence Thomas, Juan Williams, Michael Steel  and Jesse Lee Peterson with you…

Black people learn better by themselves and not in an environment where white children are given the edge and extra attention for them to keep up with us..Ask yourself why is black boys dropping out of schools when most of them are genius? Because they are pushed out to feed the prison system..Keep sucking on whiteys tits, that vinegar must be tasting real sweet to you..

          • AntBee

Not only are you a fool, you are extremely ignorant~

Take a break from your limited environment, educate yourself, and channel your energies towards a positive direction that will help black people, not set us back.

Again, it is fools like you that we no longer need. Your mind-set is a liability, not an asset.

            WAKE UP!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shakka-Zulu/1379420279 Shakka Zulu

My mind set as someone who has traveled the globe and seen with mine own eyes where ever you go, white are always on top, blacks and other colors are at the botton..You should ask yourself why? It has nothing to do with us, it has to do with the system of racism white supremacy, which we have been supporting consciously and unconsciously..You want to believe education will help, I have graduated from two ivy league universities in the top five percent of my classes, and all I see is white peope will promote inferiority in themselves, but expect perfection in others…Intergrating into nothing is not the solution to our problems, it’s total separation from white education, their ideals, and their goals..These people are selfish beings, which we can see throught their actions in colonizing all peoples of color, keeping all resources, and their homecidial behavior..You do things your way, i’ll do it my way..We’ll just agree to disagree..kissing ass is not something that i’m good at or want to be good at..

  • Yepme2

I have a plan for entrepreneurship and employment, I have posted this statement several times on different sites, as of now, received (2) responses that are communicating with me relative to my plan and method of exercising a real potential.  I read many suggestion of individual application of community effort, that is good;  I believe in universal examples of organizational function.  All energy in the universe is organized and we are energy that has been organized to not function in an organized function of beneficial results.

I will post again:  I have legitimate plans for establishing (10,000) retail outlets and other business related entities, enabling in excess of (100,000) entrpreneurship and employment positions.  A method of financing the effort with available funds already in the community.

Anyone with a sincere interest in the knowledge of potential can contact me with this email: udiditb4@comcast.net

I’m a black man who just turned 27.  I was born and raised in Philly.  Joined the army at 18, then got out and am working a very high six figure job.  I’ve been married to my black wife 7 1/2 years, yup married young and I have a 6 year old daughter.  My parents did the best they could.  They installed morals and people skills.  They taught me to find a job and work hard, however they did not teach me to survive in this world and how to truly play this game of life.  Now that I’m established, I see now how to play it.  Having said all this, the problem with the black community from what I see when it comes to our children are the parents.  Now that I’m surrounded with other successful families I see a major difference.  Their families prepare their children finacially and mentally.  Before I got this six figure job I was broke but i still took $50 bucks a month and placed in a Upromise account for my daughter ever since she was born.  This ensures that no matter what I can never say that I have nothing for you when you get out of High school which is what was told to me and my 3 brothers when we graduated.  Remeber your child did not ask to come in this world so you owe them.  Not the other way around.  Just cause you started with nothing doesn’t mean they have to.  Otherwise your just selfish.  if you saved 50 bucks a month til your child was 18.  They would have at least $11,000 without interest.  That will at least cover a cheap community college for a $100 a college hour for a 60 hr AA.  thats only $6,000 total.  could use the $5,000 to purchase a cheap car.  They could prove themselves at that college for a scholarship to a university.  Perhaps, your child doesn’t want to go to school right away.  They still have the $11k. Get a cheap car and have the deposit for an apartment and a few months rent.  if they have a car they can get to the decent jobs that are normally out of reach for those who don’t have cars.  They could go to a trade school.  Either way your child is not left wondering what to do and looking for a job at the local Burger king.  Mind you the $11k is without interest so you will have even more for your child to start their life.  Good intentions will only get someone half way.  I don’t know why parents don’t know that cause they live in the same tough world.  Teach your kid right and they will succeed in school like the young men in this article but give em the small finacial tools they need and they will be able to hit the road running after High school and be successful at life.  I could go on forever about the importance of family and a father’s role not as this tough protector but his true role that seems to have been lost to the black community and say many more easy things to do but this small suggestion is enough to at least get the wheels turning hofpefully for the new generation of Black parents.  Always think ahead.

I think the removal of entitlement programs, section 8, link card ect. would aid these individuals to get off their asses.
