Teacher Says She Was Fired for Praying in School

Your Black World Reports.

Anita Wooten-Francis, a 52-year old Assistant Special Education Teacher claims she was fired and ridiculed by the principal at her school because she liked to pray.  Wooten-Francis says that she worshiped in her class when the students were not in the room and read her bible during her lunch break.  She also led other teachers in a prayer group and would play gospel music.

According to Ms. Wooten-Francis, her spiritual choices were not a concern until Principal George Andrews arrived at Canarsie School in 2004.  In spite of the fact that Ms. Wooten-Francis claims that she never tried to influence the kids with her Christianity, she was still harassed and eventually fired.

“He said, ‘You can’t be praying in my school,’ ” said Wooten-Francis. “He said I was the ringleader in praying.”

She also claims that the principal made fun of her beliefs.

According to papers filed in a Brooklyn federal court, Wooten-Francis says that “he was aware that she and other Christians were praying to have the demons removed from his spirit, but that it was not working.”

Wooten-Francis also stated in her lawsuit that the school was undergoing significant deterioration during their time under the new principal.  She claims that they were using money from school bake sales, not for charity, but for parties and lunches.   The filing states that after Wooten-Francis complained about the abuses, she was fired on charges that she grabbed a kindergartner, which she says never occurred.

“Sometimes I will drop my Bible because my hands go numb and I have no feeling. How in the world am I going to grab a child?” she said, citing nerve damage in her hands from a medical condition.

“And if you look at the reports, it’s not even stated that the kids said themselves that I hit the kid,” she said to the New York Post.

An anonymous teacher describes Ms. Wooten-Francis as a “fantastic lady” who “gave her life to the kids” and “wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

She says she has no plans to let go of her faith.

“I’m a Christian,” she said. “I believe Jesus Christ is my lord and savior . . . I know that I’m trusting God, and the truth will come out.”

It would make sense if she was praying in class or in front of the other students. But this sounds ridiculous.

    What is the principal’s religion?

    • Sareta Y.

Not relevant at all, Ms. Beverly.

That’s why teachers need unions. This would have gone to arbitration and she probably would have won, or the principal would not have bothered with such bogus charges.

She does belong to a union, but the story posted here lack substantial information. She is a NYC Public School teacher, her firing is being appealed along with her lawsuit being filed.

She was not fired because of her religious beliefs, but that is debatable on whether or not it played a role with her principal making this decision.

Her azz need to be fired..I get tired of these evangelicals trying to convert me with the man in the clouds BS..If you believe it, then keep it to yourselves, I dont want any part of your religious conversion..The last time our ancestors saw someone with a damn bible, they ended up loosing their lands, lives, and found themselves in the bottom of a ship heading to strange lands to work for free..These people are something else, every where you go from the military, politics, busness, work, schools, etc everybody feels they have the right to invade your space with their BS beliefs..Find a religious school to go to work at, i’m sure there are plenty out there who might hire you…If my children were  in her class, I would have serious issues with her and this school..She should have kept her bible in her car, go out on her lunch breaks and read it there…

I have to agree with Shakka Zulu. Stop trying to convert me. At my age, my life experience, my intelligence, I am well aware of what I need. If you really step back and listen to the nonsense you are spilling, you would question what you were taught. It makes no sense to me. With the Christian God being is so judgmental and demanding, I cannot follow.

This story does sound a bit odd. There is something missing. She has every right to pray. Maybe it was excessive, infringing on her role as a teacher. Whether we all have the same spiritual beliefs or not, we should be concerned with employers ridding us because we may wear religious or cultural attire or practice prayer or reflect a certain culture or religious belief. No one should fire us because of that. And you remember this argument when these politicians are determining whether they would hire a Muslim or not. We can not expect the Constitution to protect one group and not the other.

Sensationalism used to rile up some Christians and their sense that their culture is “under attack.”  I expect to see this type of flimsy story on Fox news, but not here.  More facts and a deeper analysis would have helped.
