Dr. Boyce: Breaking Down the Rhetoric of Bishop Eddie Long

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World.

In this interview, I speak with Christopher House, who is earning a doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh with a specialty in African American Rhetoric/Communication.  In this conversation, we analyze the method of communication of Bishop Eddie Long, who recently settled a lawsuit filed against him for sexual coercion of young men within his church.

The interview is below.

I can appreciate the attempted characterization of Eddie Long by Mr. House but I can’t get away from the resounding statement made by Long, (I am not the man they are saying I am) or (this thing I am going to fight). This is a hole that Long dug for himself. How he will crawl out of this hole remains to be seen. I know that time has a way of softenong the harsh effects of some misdeeds, yet those effects become tiny embers that flare at the least bit of movement.

Bottom line is, he did it! When David got caught, he said I have sinned! God always held leaders accountable for their wroks of evil or good, Samson, Moses, King Saul, Solamon, Peter n dening Jesus, Aaron & Miriam for speaking out against Moses Num.12:1-15. My point is, God didn’t have closed meeting behind doors, he wanted to expose sin, that repentance might come forth that he might get the glory. There has been no confession, therefore no forgiveness is given, because no repentance has been sought.

Bishop Long is a “damaged good” who has sorrowfully swallowed the poison that damaged him, then asked for more.  His program was so pitifully transparent that this settlement he paid for only guarantees he will continue to suffer as a direct result of his denial of his own purgatory which at this point is self inflicted.  Whatever god he claims to serve, I’ll take a pass on.
What he hasn’t learned yet is that the more he buys into an evil concept for some short term, ill-perceived gain without ever questioning its evil deeds,  the more he will have to pay on a level that puts his monetary gain (bling) to true shame.
That part of me that feels any compassion for him at all (very little at this point) is that he is a mentally, spiritually, and morally “sick”  and confused individual.  The “shame pool” this guy floats in is getting deeper by the minute and he won’t be able to tread sludge forever.  He’s just a micro version of this dysfunction.  There is definitely a Macro version in place  Maybe by some kind of subconscious suggestion, he’s been following the “pedophile priest” model with some kind of religious fervor.
Note: I hear the catholic church recently released a paper that attempts to put most of the blame for the pedophile priest issue on the “promiscuous nature of the 60′s”.  Saw that coming.  So the reports of the church took out an insurance policy with “Lloyd’s of London” in the 1930′s to address this fiasco would blow the 60′s theory to bits, and if they took out a policy in the 30′s, then its been an issue way before then.
Sympathy and forgiveness are always a consideration but for this mess,  I can’t find much  of either at this time.
