The Supreme Court recently made a landmark ruling stating that the state of California is to immediately release nearly 1/3 of its prisoners. Obviously, the non-violent offenders are the ones who have a chance to come home, but the move was a bold one to deal with the epidemic of mass incarceration. Our Never Going Back Campaign with Your Black World has worked to fight against mass incarceration and recidivism, so we are delighted to see the first steps of what we hope will be a national movement for the reduction of mass incarceration, especially as it pertains to men and women of color.
But there are questions about the ruling that haven’t been answered: How will this translate to other states? Will the inmates be actually released or simply transferred? What happens to these men and women when they come home?
To answer these questions, I brought in Your Black World Legal correspondent Elliot Millner. Elliot focuses on issues that relate to incarceration and racism in the legal system. The video is below.
