Dr. Boyce: Those Ugly, Ugly Black Women

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, YourBlackWorld.com

I just finished an interview with WHUR radio in Washington DC (you can listen by clicking here).  The topic was an article in Psychology Today by Dr. Satoshi Kanazawa, a Professor at The London School of Economics.  In his commentary, Professor Kanazawa seemed to argue that higher levels of testosterone make black women less attractive than women of other races.  He also cites high testosterone levels as an explanation for why black men might be perceived to be more attractive.

Of course, black women around the world shut down the Psychology Today website after hearing the results of Kanazawa’s argument.  One has to remember that this is the same professor who also said that people in sub-Saharan Africa are in poverty because they have lower IQs.  Well, considering the source,  I don’t give much credibility to what the professor has to say.  Black women who are offended by the professor’s comments may just want to step aside and allow Kanazawa’s colleagues to eat his career alive.

The professor’s remarks hit a deep place for African American women, who are consistently maligned by the world for not being quite as appealing as the 80-pound blonde that is shoved in our faces in most Hollywood blockbuster films.  They are insulted by black men, like NFL star Albert Haynesworth, who said “I don’t even like black girls,” when he was accused of sexually harassing an African American waitress.

One has to take a moment to reflect on just how sick it is that there are thousands of black men just like Haynesworth who act as if they would rather date a Pit Bull than a black woman.  How insulted their mothers, sisters and daughters must feel that these “men” have somehow decided that black women are not worthy of the respect they show to women of other races.  I recall a consultant for the NFL telling me that when he met with all the wives of the players on a particular team, there wasn’t one black woman in the room.  Now, this was during the 1980s, where white women were truly a trophy to behold for many black male athletes.  But the truth is that there are still quite a few brothers who’ve decided that black women should be placed in the back of the bus of attraction.

While the remarks of Professor Kanazawa are certainly problematic and should be readily dismissed, it’s important that black men become part of this conversation.   An overture of outrage on behalf of black women might make black women feel a little better to know that they don’t have to fight these battles alone.  While we certainly know that no one is perfect, the reality is that the imperfections of black women seem to get a spotlight that is a bit brighter than everyone else.  It must be accepted, however, that similar to black men, some black women must also understand the value of personal growth and self-development to overcome the damage that was done by historical oppression.  In other words, being a beautiful woman is not as important as being a beautiful person, and this is something that we must reiterate to our little girls.

When it’s all said and done, the conversation about Professor Kanazawa is effectively over.  But we must continue the discussion that advocates on behalf of women of color to ensure that they receive the respect they deserve in all segments of society.  Additional ownership of black media outlets might also help to create a world where every talented black female actress does not have her opportunities trumped by the anorexic white woman that the world has chosen to idolize (like the ridiculousness of Angelina Jolie playing Cleopatra in an upcoming film).  There are different ways to express beauty and every culture has it’s own swag; black women possess a swag like no other.

Those Ugly, Ugly Black Women?  The young, single men down here in Virginia will probably be upset with what I have to say about this article.  But Dr. Watkins and members of his “Your Black World” staff must all live in New York and the women up there must not be like the ones down here.  Here in Dixie we have the same percentage of really good looking black women as we have really good looking white women, and Asian women, and etc. women.  If this is known, there are going to be more cars with Virginia tags and bumper stickers that read “I love New York.”  And there will be more young, single men driving cars with bumper stickers that read “If you love New York take I-95 north.”

Or maybe there are just as many really good looking black women in New York, but people up there have a some kind of negative psychological perception that skews their views of reality.  Joseph L. Bass, Ed.D.

You must have been beaten with an ugly stick..Why dont you take your white, hispanic, or asian women and go crawl into a cave? Beauty is very subjective and is in the eyes of the beholder..For some people, a bald headed woman is beautiful while for others, having women with fake european looking hair on their heads is considered beauty..White women know they are no match for the black woman, we are seeing all these negative publicity directed at black women and men since this black family has occupied the WH..They are always talking about Michelle Obama’s arms, butt, legs, etc..They have not had a first lady in the white house before Michelle,  who could afford to have her legs or arms exposed that were as toned and fit looking as Michelle’s..

Japanese people have been trying to get their white pass into european society thinking it will ease up their persecution by the west..Marrying or sexing your enemies will not get your enemies off your back..Writing nasty things about blacks to further white supremacy goals is going to put you into whites cross hairs, once they are finished with blacks and arabs..I see all white, asia, hispanic women, botoxing, sun-tanning, breast and azz inplants, all trying to look like the sisters..Black women are the envy of all ethnic grps, this is the only reason these negative commentaries are published every week to keep the black man and woman apart, pushing them to look for partners, preferably with whites..

I feel that Kanazawa’s study is more a commentary on him and Japanese trains of thought on beauty more than anything else. As women, I think that we are thick skinned when it comes to the beauty standard because a lot of us have had to hear all kinds of craziness from folks our whole lives. What I encouraged folks to do in my threads about Kanazawa was to really think about who this study was aimed at, and I believe it was aim at white women. I also think it was aimed in a way to justify certain amounts of “haterade” is had by those who see an increase of visibility for women of color. Women named the most beautiful women in the world are women that are of color. Japanese women are whitening their skin based on a crazy Japanese beauty standard.

  • AntBee

Thank you Dr. Watkins for speaking up for Black women.

I give credit where credit is due.

  • http://www.perspectives-anotherwaytoview.blogspot.com Carolyn Moon

I have the illustration that you’ve posted of the various shades of black women.  Thank you for your support. Mothers, Grandmothers,Aunts, Sisters and Daughters appreciate your sentiments.

  • claudia

It amazes me that while we as black women are looked upon by whites and black men as being ugly the fact is that the very things that black women are described as making us unattractive is the very things that white women try so hard to look like. They have copied our image in every way they can. In getting larger lips, bigger butts and hips. It seems as though that everything that black women has which is considered ugly is desired by so many other races of women.

    • Omari Al-Qadaffi

I wonder why Black women get hairstyles which emulate White women, and try everything that they can do so as to reject their natural hair. Black women even degrade other Black women who have “nappy” hair…

      • Lincoln Hayes

Gotta agree, and I say that as a black man. The argument that white people “try to look like us” is so lame as to be laughable. When (a minuscule percentage of) white women go and get butt implants, etc., it has NOTHING TO DO with black people (one could argue that if white women were really trying to look like black women, they’d all be trying to weigh 200 lbs. Trust me, they’re not).

People obtain different looks all the time. And if a particular group happens to think they have the market cornered on that look that’s their issue. Its as stupid to say whites are trying to look like blacks in this way as it is to say blacks are trying to “be white” by getting their hair permed, staying out of the sun to avoid getting darker (you know it!), etc. Idiotic.

Please stop with the silly, completely incorrect generalities. They only serve to make you look like small minded.

  • Brook

We cannot stand to the side and allow the world to disrespect black women in this way.  It’s ridiculous.

    • Crystalbtoush

I am a beautiful black woman i love my complexion my hair i love everything about me other women envy our beauty thats why they get butt implants lip injections everything .They never gave a sister any credit for having curves but they talk about Kim K all the time go figure.

      • sonja

Amen…and dont forget J Lo…. God made beautiful women in all colors shapes and sizes…Its a shame that like u said when it comes to us no one wants to celebrate the beauty of the black woman… Remember we are Eve everyone came from us……As black women we possess a strength only God could have given even in the midst of the Sure Hatred we face everyday we still have managed to Love, Encourage and most of all Survive! But this article just lets me know that Its our Time…. They have singled us out for a Blessing….. Full Requittal…..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1157957448 Cassandra Steele

People will say any thing to discredit Black People. It’s a sad commentary. Don’t believe the Hype. I “ain’t” ugly. Matter of fact, my looks and hair tend to bring on the “haters” more fiercely. Especially my hair. I’ve had comments like, “That’s the real deal there”ain’t” no perm on that. Too funny. I’ll never forget it.

  • Diana

*sarcasm* Oh well I guess we African or Afro or Black or Colored or Negress are all ugly. I guess the caucasions & Asian women love the looks of the ugly women. I guess the “ugliness” is most desired by these women ha! I guess us “ugly” women should wear a T-shirt that says ’Behold the Desirous Looks of the Ugly Female Is In Season’.

On a more serious note: Yes I am a Black woman & I think I’m a beautiful person inside & out. I will not let the Black man or the non-black woman discredit us. That’s ok because I will accept what God has given me. A woman who is spiritually strong is a woman that makes a good name for herself and because of that she is a beautiful person.

    • Omari Al-Qadaffi

Thats great. You arent one of the Black women that have relaxed hair i hope…

      • Toppergem

Omar, what is this thing you have for relaxed hair.  There are many black women who don’t need to relax their hair in order for it to be straight.  Black women come in every color and have hair of every texture…that is why black women and more than beautiful…

  • Diana

That’s why it is in the Black woman’s best interest if she pray to find a God-fearing man not try to hook up with little boys in a man’s body

  • sonja

Thank u… for ur words of love, comfort and understanding they r priceless…

    God Bless U…..Man of God……

    • marilynn

With all of my 5’11″ I strut proud and tall in my beautiful colors with my afro all out and picked clean smelling good just like me an the curve of my hips and the dip in my stride tells me I’m that beautiful black mother sister, Aunt, daughter and I’m that woman who is proud to be black and don’t care who don’t think it or like it for I’m me and yes I love everything stitch of me.

  • Anonymous

Those Ugly, Ugly Black Women!  You do not know what you’re missing with Black women. I have compared the looks of females of Asians, Blacks, Whites, Mexican, Native Indians those from Middle East and found they are all the same – beautiful.

  • Omari Al-Qadaffi

I dont even know why Black women are getting  so upset over something that one man said. Who cares really?

    • Djphoenix46

I agree. This is some old hateful psychology that used to work on Black women. The truth is I am a woman of African Ancestry, born in America and I am 51 years old. There is not a day that goes by when I am not seriously hit on by men of all races and ages. Good black don’t crack. All comments are relative in my book. Beauty is as beauty does. The media has done too many stories of this type lately. Micheal Eric Dyson said that this is happening because Black women are among the most unprotected  women in the world. I hope that our men step up and defend us like we have always done them. If not, that’s ok, regardless what anyone says, I’m good.

  • Anonymous

PSEUDOSCIENCE is alive and well.  I’m absolutely convinced Kanazawa’s reported findings can be disproven, but perhaps (as you suggest) it’s not worth the effort.  Often imitated, but never duplicated…the wellspring of black beauty is…at a minimum…absolute, unapologetic, and incomparable.

  • Edye

I remember during the 80′s when so many Black professionals were marrying white women, my girlfriend said to me,  what would it be like if successful Black men would all marry Black women and have Black children?  What would our communities be like in the future??  May be the answer is here when we observe so much confusion in our communities and homes as to who we are and what we should be doing to help each other. As long as we continue to separate ourselves from each other mentally and physically, we will not be united.  We can disagree but are we united as a people?

    • Anonymous

The very word Africa means disunity, separation, fragmentation. As long as that given word is used we will never be a unit.

      be string Eves!

Thank you so much for your post.  It is an extremely thoughtful response as your responses always are.  Your call to action is so critical to the healing of generations of racism.  With complete respect, my one bit of feedback is that when I read the headline of this article, I thought it irresponsible.  One should never repeat statements as such even in sarcasm, with all due respect to you Dr. Boyce.  So when the web search of “Those Beautiful, Beautiful Black Women” is had, something as powerful as the above article would come up on the top of the Google list, though the search for the contrary very well may be more numerous is result.  We have quite enough negative affirmations out there.  Thank you for all that you do!

Why not focus and RELISH that higher Testosterone levels DECREASE

I am reminded daily of my beauty by blkmen, whitemen, hispanicmen and middle eastern men. i accept the compliments proudly as a black women with no botox in my face no implants in my butt or breast, no fillers in my lips no surgery on my eyelids and no lypo in my thighs, i guess you might say that i am what most men really appreciate both black and white, asian hispanic or other and thats simply “a real women”. i certainly want to include”i have the hair that GOD gave me on my head!

  • BEVERLY

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL ESPECIALLY US BLACK SISTERS!  THE WHITE CULTURE HAS ITS  OWN SENSE OF WHAT BEAUTY IS DEFINED AS.  YET THEY WANT TO SIMULATE OUR LIPS, DERRIERE, AND TAN TO REACH ARE BEAUTIFUL SKIN COMPLEXIONS, PLEASE WE ALL KNOW WHAT IS BEAUTIFUL!  AN ARTIST CAN ATTEST TO REAL BEAUTY.  MY SON HAS A DAUGHTER BY A NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN, I LOVE THEM BOTH.  BACK IN THE DAY I WOULD HAVE NEVER ACCEPTED THIS.

  • Bev1_77

Just last week a black male coworker told me he did not like my hair (natural wash and go) and it was not me. Just because I choose not to put any more chemicals in my hair, it’s not me and I guess I am considered to be less attractive.  Brothers please wake up.

  • Anthony II

Why Psychology Today would even consider attempting to stamp this study is the question.  Getting paid is not yielding the return it used to given the inflation rates and all.

  • Marvin Smith

Without any doubt whatsoever, our Black Women are by far the most beautiful women in the world! It amazes me that Black Women who have been given good reason to have a positive self-concept could ever look into a mirror and not determine that it is they who are, by far, the most beautiful of them all.
It also amazes me that Black Women are responsible for creating this ridiculous discussion by attempting to copy and wear  the hair of other women. It is most difficult to find Black Women who are comfortable under their own hair! How do you, Black Women, make an argument supporting your claim as being the most beautiful women when you hate your own hair and yourself? The biggest and most reliable way to rid ourselves of the notion that there are prettier women than Black Women is to have Black Women return to the time when they loved themselves and their own hair!

  • Anonymous

The ignorance that is continually perpetuated within the “educated” society further perplexes me. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and therefore illustrates the subjective view of physical attractiveness. Mr. Kanazawa could’ve just left it at “I don’t like Black women” instead of further illustrating his lack of intelligence in adding the pseudo-science of biased polling and judgments.

Black women, I love you in all your glorious beauty. Personally, I like women of all nationalities and origins, but honestly, I don’t see many that compare to Black women. The contradictory statistics that are added each time about Black people in general and media coverage that consistently focuses on negativity tend to confuse me as they often lead to paradoxical situations and it makes me wonder why few have picked up on it.

  • Joia

It is such a pity that black folks still so need the validation of
others.  Should we ever gain enough self confidence and love of
self, then it wouldn’t matter what others call us.  Once we learn
to love ourselves, and stop the extreme assimilation and need to
have others love us when, in fact, we don’t seen to be able to love
ourselves, stories like this wouldn’t even see the light of day.

And, subliminal thougts and messages of the lesser appreciated
image of brown and black Sistahs shines through loud and clear
in the art rendering.  Notice that the fairer skinned Sistah dominates,
and takes up half of the imagery; and the brown and black skinned
Sistahs are left crammed in and struggling to share 50% of the alloted
space in the artist rendering.  There’s a very definite message of value
    in this imagery.

The message in this story is:  don’t blame others for saying what you,
yourself are thinking.  There’s racism within our race, and who buys into
white supremacy of beauty standards; and everything else more than
    black folks themselves.

You can’t find a brotha, who looks like he got a job, and can afford a
date who isn’t looking down his nose at black women, especially those
of us who love our God given hair, nose, skin, selves, who isn’t proudly
grinning and skinning and drooling over some woman who doesn’t look
like him and/or his Mother, Sister and Aunts; and many have the unmitigated
gall to brag about not wanting to date, marry or be associated with black
women.  But, they think they got it going on.  Stupidity is as stupidity does.

  • miseagle1013

And those ugly, ugly pale face white women with no color at all

  • claudia

I can say that I love who I am as a black woman. I am 58 years old and have not one wrinkle on my face. I dont need no botox, no facial surgery, no thicker lips, no hair weave because my hair is naturally beautiful being kinky curly, no plastic surgery to look younger because Im bless to look twice under my age, no butt surgery or butt pads. Yeah! this is how God made me and I am proud to be black and beautiful.

  • Yaa Asantewa

Great response Dr. however its interesting that the photo that is shown with this article showcases (in front) the sister with the features and hue closer to the Eurowomen.

Let me get this straight, white woman do not get things done to look like a black woman. WE do not even want to look like a black woman.
We get tan because it makes us feel slender and look nice in light colored clothes.  Lip injections are done to sometimes plump out lips that loose collagen as we age.  Black woman do straighten their hair, wear long haired wigs, bleach their hair blonde, wear blue contacts, shave their legs.   I really think black woman want to be white.

    • Fritolay

Agreed. If white women wanted to look black women, they would blacken their skin. Obviously white women only tan enough to have a nice brown tint. If white women wanted to look like black women, they would get butt injections that would make their butts as a big as house. Obviously white women only enlargen their butts enough to give it a nice fullness. If ww wanted to be like black women, they would get lip injections that made their lips the size of a house. Obviously ww only do so to make their lips fuller than thin lips. Same applies to the widening of the hips. I love the large butts, wide hips, etc. that black women have, but it pretty obvious that white women are not trying to look like them.
