How the Mighty Are Fallen: Tiger Woods Drops Out of the Top 10

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black World

We’ve officially seen the end of an era.  The great Tiger Woods, the golfer who was once considered unstoppable, has dropped out of the top 10 in the World Golf Rankings for the first time in 14 years.   The last win for Woods was 18 months ago in the Australian Masters and he will drop to number 11 in the next world golf ranking, set to be published on Monday.

The last time Tiger was out of the top 10 was when he was ranked 13th on April 6, 1997.  This was right before winning the Masters.  After that, Woods went on an unprecedented tear, being ranked number one for 623 weeks.

I remember a time when nearly every golfer in the world had a World Golf Ranking score between .1 and 10.  The number two player in the world had a score of a little over 11.  Tiger Woods’ score?  It was over 30.  I was inspired by his greatness, for it seemed that he was the black athlete who could not be stopped.

There was also a great sense of pride in the fact that Tiger, like a mythical superhero, could show up to a tournament as the only black man out of 150 participants and whip every single player on the course.  I thought that the emergence of Tiger Woods would lead to a wave of  great black golfers, as other inspired young black men took to the course to replicate the efforts of their idol.  As much as he ridiculously described himself to be “caublinasian,” (whatever that means) he struck a mighty blow to one of the most racist and elitist sports in the world.  The man other golfers traditionally expected to be their caddy was consistently spanking them on the course and asking “who’s your daddy?”

But to date, there are no prominent black male golfers other than Tiger himself.   With Tiger’s exit from greatness, the path has been cleared for new, hungrier, young (mostly white and Asian) players to make their mark on the world.  I never thought I’d see the day where my hero had become an also-ran, but I guess nothing lasts forever.

I’ll admit that there is a part of me that remains bitter about Tiger’s sudden fall from grace, sort of the way I felt when an old girlfriend dumped me without warning or when my best friend suddenly died from a gunshot wound to the head.  I expected a slow, steady decline in Tiger’s abilities (i.e. Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, etc.), but instead, I had to witness something far more tragic.  Since his fateful car accident where his wife bashed in the windows of his truck with a golf club to (smh) “pull him out of the truck,” Tiger has been just a shadow of himself.  After hearing about the wild allegations of unprotected sex with porn stars, I felt for Tiger’s wife, who may have experienced unspeakable consequences of her husband’s irresponsible behavior.  I also wondered how a man who’d been known for having such discipline could unravel right before our eyes.

On one hand, it probably got a little dull for Tiger to keep investing the amount of time and energy it takes to be the greatest golfer in the history of the world:  You have to practice longer than your competitors, you can’t have as much fun as everyone else, and you’ve got to make sacrifices that most people aren’t willing to make.  I became concerned about Tiger’s career when he decided to get married, for I’ve always felt that relationships sometimes take away time that highly ambitious people can’t commit.

At the same time, Tiger may end up falling painfully short of breaking the record that served as the driving force behind his entire career: winning 18 major championships, set by Jack Nicklaus.  It will surely make the white male golf establishment happy to see that the incredibly threatening black guy never quite reached his mark.  By finishing with 14 majors, Tiger may end up painfully close to his goal.  No, I do not think Tiger is going to win another major – his attention seems to have gone elsewhere.

Perhaps the lesson that can be learned from Tiger is the value of maintaining your focus.  Sex is one of the things that brings great men to their knees.  Even heads of state have watched their careers go up in flames over the cute little intern or sexy assistant.  The power of God and Mother Nature can be undeniable.

So, to those who wish to be great at anything, I remind you to keep your eye on the prize. Tiger Woods achieved fame, fortune and all the success that a man could want.  But the truth is that he may be forever haunted by the fact that he once dreamed about breaking Jack’s record and defined his entire career around a goal that he will never reach.  That’s a lot to give up in exchange for satisfy that thing that resides in your pants.  I wonder if it was worth it.

This is so sad when something like this happen. But I think that if a man is in the Public eye and married, he should travel with his Wife because, there are so many women that are prying to get their hands on a Wealthy man. And what is so silly about this is that a man should know that the woman does not care for him as a man, she after him because of his status, for this too continue to happen is not using common sense. Walk away and go take a shower or call the wife and ask her to join you on your Trip. What Tiger Wood did is something that can not be forgiven over night. He knew better but took a chance and got burned for life.

This is not sad at all now he know.

I am not saying what Tiger did was not wrong but what I am saying is that our US media destroyed one of the greatest US golfers of all time. If Tiger were living in europe he would have had a change to put this behind him but not here in the US. They want to paint him as the poster child for a male cheater. All need forgiveness if you have no sin throw the first stone. Woods distruction iis Americs fault.

issues or no issues; controversies or no controversies, all great athletes have their ends. only Tiger Woods had his career slowed down to pave way for all the controversies, but he will be back. He’ll rise to the top again…

Tiger,s problems are based in his personality and his world view.

This is what happen when you don’t have Jesus in your life….His bff is the devil….all his talent was deceptive because it was from the devil…..good blessings from the devil are short term….

And Jesus died on the cross because he did not have Jesus in his life..This is so damn stupid what you commented on..There was a creative force before this jesus person every came into existence..Read about the 16 crucified saviors before jesus..What books were Adam & Eve following before this book of Genesis was revealed to Moses? If you would go back into your book, all the prophets and messengers before Moses must be lost since they had no books or guidance to follow..I need you to stop believing in the supernatural and look around and see with eyes..Walking by faith and not sight, has led to a lot of black folks finding themselves dangling at the end of a rope, because they believed the people who enslaved them with the bible were god fearing and loved all mankind..Walk into the middle of a twelve lane interstate roadway by faith, and not sight and see if you’ll not end up as road kill for buzzards…Unbelieveable the stupidity of some people, mostly blacks, when it comes to this manmade construct called religion…

Tiger got taken down like all these black athletes who mary white women..This is the new form of draining wealth from the black community, get these black men these big contracts and marry them to white women who will keep this money in white hands..Lamar Odom, has Khloe Kardashian brother living in the home with him and his wife..This boy’s mother has money from his late father Rober Kardashian, but we have a black man taking on ownership of feeding and clothing this white boy, while his black family are no where in sight..Pitiful, how these black athletes are brainwashed into chasing white flesh as the ideal..Tiger could get himself back on his feet, he need to stay away from all white women..He has the Samson complex, and we all know what was done to Samson as a result of his lust for Deliliah.. Michael Jordan with his Cuban hotchie, Charles Barkley, and that clown Haynesworth who said he does not date black girls when confronted about his assault of the waitress..I wonder how his mother and sisters felt after hearing this foolish excuse..

Thank you Shakka for commenting on this.  I can’t understand black men liking this racist named Tiger Woods.  His insults to black women – (and no, I’m not upset because he dates only white women).  Why do black men have to put down black women when they date outside of their race?  It’s like they can’t date outside of the race without insulting us.  Other races (namely white women) have questioned why do black men do this?  You can’t trust anyone who will insult their own – period.

Frankly, because Tiger is a racist, I could give a crap what he does.

Let me correct your statement about a person of color being racist..This is only defined by whites since they are the only racist on this planet..They came up with the concept of race with white on top and black at the very bottom, no one can deny whites from doing what they want..Race means you’re in a race running to win, ism means institutions and systems; whites are in control of all institutions and systems and no one, even that african american in the white house, can stop them from being tacky, trashy, terroristic..We might be biased, or even prejudiced, but we can never be racist..Calling peoples of color racist, is deflection by whites to make all peoples of color responsible for the racist system whites created…

        • Altha Cutright

          True statement.

Keep an eye open they will all end up like OJ.

I have no empathy for Tiger, he’s so confused he doesn’t know or remember he’s Earl’s son a Black Man!! He married a white woman so he gets what he deserves, Trash begets Trash!!

Never Mind. He’s Just Bending His Knees so as the higher to Soar, oh Yea of Little Faith!

What makes me angry with Tiger is that he apologized and cried like a baby.  He should have told everybody to mind their own business.

He has more money than he could possibly spend in his lifetime, and he wound up losing sponsors anyway, and is now a losing player – why didn’t he just tell the press that his private life was no concern of theirs?
