Dr. Boyce and Rev. Al Sharpton Discuss Black Unemployment, Onslow Ross

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

In this episode of “Keeping it Real with Rev. Al Sharpton,” Rev. Sharpton and I get into an involved discussion on a few important topics:

1) Who’s responsible for rising black unemployment?  Many are pointing their fingers toward the president, while I am in agreement with Rev. Sharpton that the Congressional Black Caucus and private industry should also be held accountable on this issue.

2) The suspicious prosecution of Pastor Onslow Ross in Macon, GA – Pastor Ross does not appear to be a man who deserves to be in prison.  I went to visit him in an Alabama facility this month, and after hearing various accounts of what happened, he at least deserves the bond hearing that his attorney has been requesting (which the courts have inexplicably and suspiciously delayed).

3) The success of the film “Jumping the Broom,” partly released by Bishop TD Jakes.  This opens the question of how far black pastors should be encouraged to go to spread positive messages outside the church.  Additionally, the success of the film reminds us of the importance of making more films for African American audiences.

What role do unemployed black people play in their not having a job? Why are we always looking for someone to blame? 98% are unemployed because they will not work for a particular amount (well this is a recession) and the other 2% just not looking or do not want to work. So tired of the blame game!

The average black person do want to work and have become successful in this life. The problem that black African Americans have is the same problems when inherited from slavery and its not a blame game. Blacks are held back because the color of their skin and also because so many whites still have the same mentality since slavery days and that is they dont feel blacks are worthy enough to run a business. I have worked in a business being the only black on my team it wasnt a day that went by that I myself was intimidated, bullied, outcast because the firm didnt feel that I was equal. Dont ever say that blacks are lazy. They all arent lazy thye just not given the same opportunity as the asians and whites. Asians are still able to keep their jobs during this bad economical time. Why is that?

Many of us already feel inferior going into the job. It is very difficult to mentally deal with being the only black in a company of whites. I have been in that situation all of my work life and have done well despite being the only one. We are not prepared for the way whites think and do things. They are not always racist but the atmosphere is hard to take when you are the only one.

Asians prepare themselves for work mentally and physically, so when they open a store in a rough neighborhood, they stay anyway and devise a way to get along with the residents while making money in our community . We must do the same and prepare for the fight.
